GMC Forum _ Introduce Yourself ! _ It's About Time

Hello everybody. There isn't really much to know, I'm just some teenager living in a tiny town in the USA that has a particularly strong liking for metal, as my name would suggest. My favorite band is Blind Guardian, and I pretty much found this place due to Marcus Siepen being on here. 
When I was 11 I bought a cheap acoustic at Walmart, and although my guitar itself has much improved since then, I have unfortunately made little progress over the last 5 or so years. I figure that is mostly due to little practice and the fact that there aren't really guitar teachers in my area, but I've been back at it over the last couple months and my grandparents decided to let me try this out for a month and if it works well for me they said they'd keep me on here. I asked them about a year and a half ago, but at the time they didn't like the idea. I'm very excited to learn some new things and take a look at all that GMC has to offer, and hopeful I'll be able to stick around a while.

Well, for specifics, I talked two friends of mine into dressing up like elves from Lord of the Rings and walking around the school at lunch playing The Bard's Song, so I'm trying to learn that. As far as general things, I'm working on alternate picking, because for some reason my wrists don't agree with the motions of it. I've been trying to memorize some scales over the last few days as well, and doing a ton of Marcus's warmup's from that little video set. To give you an idea of my skill level, well by the time I finish that set of videos, my fingers and everything are really sore. In other words, I need a LOT of work in like every way possible.

Welcome to the community ma'am! If there is anywhere on the internet you can go to grow as a musician, it's here. The first step in getting there is being publicly accounted for, and here at GMC, we will hold you to it! you'll be great before you know it

Try not to give yourself too much to worry about when it comes to learning scales. Just settle on one for the time being. Either the major or minor scale would be the best place to start. Seeing as much of metal is minor scale based, learning the E minor scale might be a good place to focus.
You may have seen this one already but this is a good lesson for picking. It's moderate speed and manageable and is varied enough to stop you getting bored

You can always just pick fragments from any lesson as well, you don't have to do the whole thing.

I actually left my guitar teacher for GMC so dont think of it as your dire strait. 
(can you use dire strait in a sentence?)
