GMC Forum _ Techniques (Muris) _ When Playing Acoustic

Posted by: Michael C Dec 10 2007, 10:42 PM

Hey Muris.

I wonder if you use your palm to mute when you play acoustic guitar. I have just watched you're lesson were you play the nylon guitar and you hand position didn't look the classical hand position and I just wondered if it's to use your palm to mute smile.gif?

Because a play the classical way and I find it a bit difficult to mute because the palm of the hand is so far away from the bridge.

Another question: Isnt it so important to mute on an acoustic as on the electric guitar? You can't hear it so well on a acoustic as on electric if a string rings.

And last question: Do you sometimes use your thump to mute the strings? Both on acoustic and electric guitar and in which situations?

Hope to hear from you and thank very much.

Greeting

Michael.

Hi Michael smile.gif

I use palm mostly when I play with the pick but sometimes even when it's finger picking,
you noticed it well, classical position of the fist doesn't give you chance to mute with the palm
while this position I use does. smile.gif
It isn't needed that much as on electric indeed,it's hard to hear noise,no drive etc.
But when it's needed to mute it then I use it with the palm,
not just to cover noise but to have muted notes when needed, sort of staccato.
Listen more to players like McLaughlin or DiMeola, you'll see what I mean. smile.gif

And about the thumb, not sure if you think of left or right hand palm
but I do use left hand thumb sometimes to mute, obviously, only low strings. wink.gif

Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else!!

Take care smile.gif

No worries ,I got that in mind too, guess it would be hard to mute and play with same finger
such as right hand thumb. smile.gif
