Beautiful guitar! Happy bday! Enjoy that over the holidays.
WOW what a guitar!! I am drooling all over the place. How does it feel? I have actually had quite a bit of strat thoughts recently myself, but I am looking for classic/texas tones which I can't really get from my (modern sounding american) strat. I have been looking at Squier and MIM so far. Which types of Strats have you had? The 'Texas' tone is fairly dependent upon 1) normal to slightly over wound pkups 2) heavy strings - at least a set of .11s and 3) a cleaner Fenderesque amp or Fender model/profile. Also, I personally feel that a light weight Strat gets you there easier. The best sounding Strats are usually no more than 7.5 lbs or 3.4 kgs. 6.5 lbs/2.94 kgs is ideal. Other attributes: Vintage hardware, fat neck, rosewood board, jumbo frets, 7 1/4" radius and Ash body (ash is generally lighter than alder). I have only had a squier (my starting guitar) and my current which is an Am deluxe with noiseless pickups. I should probably clarify: I am not looking specifically for an SRV type sound/strat. The only specific I can say is that I am looking for that shimmering highend typically associated with glossy maple fretboard and more traditional/dynamic sounding single coils. And if the guitar has relatively small neck (thin and narrow) and jumbo frets - then I might pull the trigger. My current strat does not really sound like a typical strat - probably because of the noiseless pickups. I do like them for what they do though, so I would not want to swap them out. (+ of course a new guitar can never be a bad thing ) The SRV sound is not really about his guitar, it was a relatively stock late 50's/Early 60s Strat. *It was him and a little bit his amp choice along with how he boosted the front end of those amps (TS808 - gain down/level up). And possibly the jumbo frets. A maple neck/fretboard is usually but not always a better choice for the shimmering 'glassy' sound. Interestingly, my 2002 with a rosewood board is my brightest of Strats (I have 4). The main things for the classic strat tone is vintage wound single coils and a relatively light body. Vintage style hardware too, though I'm slightly on the fence about this. If you maybe decide to put your own Strat together, Fender Robert Cray pickups are some of the glassiest I've found (including boutique sets) at a great price. They are also ever so slightly over wound. Lollar 'blonde' or 'black face' sets are also other great, classic 50s and 60s type sets (though expensive). A good Strat is a beautiful thing!
