Every guitar player faces it. Sometimes, your solo just doesn't cut through the mix. Is it your tone, eq, fingers, strings, what's the issue? It could be all of the above. Also it could be what your playing. With a busy background and lots of gain on the rythm guitars, it's tough for shreddy bits to be distinct without a lot of work while longer held notes can ring out and cut right through. To wit, check this vid out. There are wads of folks playing lead in this. Only one really cuts through the Mix IMHO. Jeff Loomis. He picks the right tone and the right licks, given the backing and his solo sticks out as the "solo" while the other bits all sorta sound like bits tacked on top of the rythm to me. Ola Englund has a solo that you can barely hear as it's paired with some other dude playing dive bombs for some reason. Tell me what you think.
