GMC Forum _ Competitions _ Results - Festive Challenge 2010 !

Posted by: Ben Higgins Jan 4 2011, 03:34 PM

Hi Everybody !

At last we can reveal to you the winners of The Festive Challenge. It was SO hard to decide between all your takes as everybody did so amazingly well. But of course, we had to choose eventually so here we go:

BEGINNER: Lester

The beginner lesson was the hardest to decide out of all because everybody had strong points but Lester nailed it brilliantly and demonstrated excellent rhythm, tone and vibrato. Well done Lester !

INTERMEDIATE: DidrikA

This was a close call between Didrik and Superize. Both really got to grips with the piece and impressed with their phrasing and timing ! In the end, we had to give it to Didrik due to a brilliant display of vibrato and string bending. Well done DidrikA !

ADVANCED: Maharzan

Maharzan attempted the most complex piece and blew us away with his phrasing and control. It wasn't an easy piece but Maharzan had clearly put in the work and blazed through it with style. Well done Maharzan !

We're so sorry that we have to only choose 1 winner for each category as you all were brilliant ! You all worked hard in a short space of time and you've really impressed me with your dedication and skills. If any of you want to continue working on these pieces then you can message me any time and I'm always happy to help in any way I can smile.gif

For the category winners, please send Andrew Cockburn a private message with your full address (or Private Lessons request) and prizes will be dealt with !

Once again, WELL DONE ALL OF YOU !

I thought I'd give you all some feedback on your takes !

Fre

Very impressed with your vibrato here, Fre. You said it was the most difficult part for you yet it doesn't sound that way, very good ! Things I would be tempted to look at are hand synchronisation and getting the timing a bit tighter. Apart from that, a solid effort ! smile.gif

Vaidya

This was a great effort, Vaidya. You have a very relaxed picking hand and your left hand movements were really good. It looks like some of your picking strokes seem a bit random though, sometimes you lead on an upstroke and sometimes on a downstroke so I think you could benefit from working on alternate picking discipline.

Alex

Again, another good effort. You have a very relaxed playing style (from what I can see of it !) tongue.gif You probably know what I'm going to say. Time ! Just give yourself more time next time smile.gif You can obviously play very well but it didn't help that you had to rush.

Gitarrero

This was a brilliant take Christian. Nice, fat tone as well smile.gif Your feel and timing were very strong and there's a lot of potential in your vibrato so I'd like to see you work on that. Also, the other thing we've spoken about before is I'd like to see you using your little finger more instead of your 3rd finger. Maybe next time ! wink.gif

Superize

Another brilliant display, Superize. You nailed the melody beautifully and your left hand dexterity is great. Just an issue of synchronisation with picking and fretting hand really. (But that could have been down to the time limit) It could also benefit from a touch more vibrato so maybe that's something you could look at as well. Apart from that, it can't be faulted smile.gif

Nielzsz

Great take Nielzsz ! this is why it was so hard to judge the beginner takes, because you were all so close ! Great finger positioning, I can't fault it at all. And you probably picked all the notes in the lesson closest to the way I did it. Only thing I could possibly criticise is the timing was in front of the beat sometimes ( but I also understand how difficult it is to play along to the lesson as the drums/percussion is minimal.) but apart from that, you can be proud. Again, good effort for the vibrato, this is something you can work on and take further.

Marek

Strong take here, Marek. The main thing I notice about your playing is you have a tendency to rush in front of the beat. If it was rolled back a little bit, it would probably all be near 100% smile.gif But I think this is a common trait I see in all guitarists when we try hard so no need to beat yourself up on that one. I would recommend relaxing and holding back on the beat when playing from now on. Focus on timing. Your pick and fret hands have a lot of dexterity so I would be pleased with what they can do. Try letting yourself play behind the beat for a while until you find the balance. smile.gif

ruben_mcn

Brilliant effort Ruben. I think the same things I said to Marek would apply here too. Your actual phrasing and feel were brilliant.. timing and hand synch are the areas that will benefit from work. As with Marek's take, I see a good display of vibrato and I like the way you guys are using it and daring to experiment with it. In fact, the same goes for everyone who submitted a take to the competition ! smile.gif

I hope this is helpful to you all in outlining some of the areas you need to look at. Overall, things like dexterity seem to be very good. Things like timing and synch just need to be tightened up, that's all. So not much really ! biggrin.gif Well done all !
