and also my friend is telling me i cant do artificial harmonics, although when i follow Pavel's guitar (thanks!) it sounds a lot a like. my friend keeps telling me i can only do pinch. haha
anyways, the question is what is the difference between artificial and pinch harmonics?

a pinch harmonic and an artifical harmonic are one and the same. Your friend may be confused and is trying to tell you that you can't do a natural harmonic maybe?

They're the same. Something I've noticed; Europeans usually call them artificial harmonics while Americans usually call them pinch harmonics! Funny... wink.gif

Great-Inquisitor Pavel is converting everybody to GMC laugh.gif

Pinch and Artificial are two names for the same technique. I guess your friend means you can't play a natural harmonic.

I disagree that they are the same, although they are related (but I could be wrong).

Here's what I think:

1. An artificial harmonic is any type of harmonic which is not a natural harmonic - that is to say, it is not created using an open string.

2. A Pinch harmonic is a particular type of artificial harmonic in which the harmonic is created using the thumb and pick at the same time

3. There are several other ways of creating artificial harmonics, for instance, using your palm to create the node, or tapping on the node, or perhaps even forcing the note with a finger on your left hand.

Well mostly we use artificial harmonic playing with a thumb so i wouldn't go in such directions like making it with a palm. How fast can you make a harmonic with a palm while playing speed metal riffs? smile.gif

I heard they were different. A pinch harmonic we all know is doing a harmonic with your thumb as you pick. An artificial harmonic could be where you pick the note normally and then lightly place your picking hand finger over a fret a certain number up (can't reemember which) and you get a harmonic. I've tried this and it does work. I could be mistaken though

Thats a technique that doesnt get used much in comparison to the other types of harmonics. Its very similar to natural harmonics. If you play a natural harmonic on the A string a the 12th fret (using an open string) you can get the the same interval as when you play the 2nd fret A string a tap a harmonic above the 14th fret. This could be used in place of pinch harmonics (cover off a fret with left hand, put your index finger of your picking hand on the place of the string where you would strike your thumb and pick the string with another finger). However this would have far less agression and would be waaaay unsuitable for speedriffing/picking.
