Hi everyone...

I started a gamble and asked a Chinese Guy to produce a custom Ibanez Universe fake looking exactly like the Ibanez Jem 7 GMC (Green Black Swirl). It's going to cost me 200.- US$ (and another 200.-$ US for shipping).

You can see his fakes on this page here:
http://www.cnart2008.com/class.asp?nid=550&aid=105

I know (owning a true Universe myself) that the guitar will not come close to the quality of the real thing and that the electronics for sure are going to be @$$#. But that is not my concern.
The guitars look beautiful and if all is fine with the body and neck the rest can be replaced.

He told me the body is going to be made from Elm wood. I googled it and only found medieval instruments being made from this wood type. In general it appears to be aplied for creating furniture and that it is a very stable and humid resistant type of wood. But never saw any electric guitar using that wood.

But I also saw expensive designer guitars having no wood at all.

So finally the real question is: If the guitar is well enough built (in tune, no strange string action etc...) Can it sound like a professional guitar by simply exchanging the electronik hardware?

Does anybody know how much wood affects the sound of a guitar?

I'm no expert but I think the wood has a HUGE effect - denser woods give better sustain, different woods give brighter or duller sounds etc.

Personally, I would not support this criminal activity. This is stolen intellectual property, plain and simple. You might as well buy items someone stole out of a home. No difference, don't kid yourself. That being said....

Yes, wood means everything. If elm was a great wood for guitar, I think gibson, fender, ibanez would have discovered that great secret by now. It is not just type of wood, it is quality of wood that matters.

A lot! Not only the body but also the fretboard wood is important.
And I never heard of a guitar made of Elm.

If you're interested in building your own guitar there's the Saga-kit for around $100. You assemble it and do the paint job etc etc, ditch the stock pu's and get Evo's.

Don't know if they got a RG style or if they have 24 frets but think twice before you get something out of Elm... as I said, I never heard of it.

I agree to the point that many of these guys are selling those guitars as if they were the real thing. That definitely is a crime (and this guy in particular also does not tell you if it's the real deal or not, so if you do not pay attention you might get scammed!!!).

But building a guitar cheaper copying the specs of another manufacturer is normal. Remember that Ibanez became famous by building cheaper copies of Gibson and Fender guitars. (But at least they did not fake the Gibson / Fender logo!!!)

Just for the record when I asked the guy to build the guitar I told him to not write the Ibanez logo on the headstock. I want it plain and no-name. I am not aiming at prentending of having an Ibanez Universe (already got one), but I am extremely curious of the result.

But yes I share your concerns. If the guys simply built the guitars looking the same but not attempting to sell them as the real thing all would be peachy.

The whole Idea behind this story is that I wanted a backup 7-String. I bought for a friend of mine a 159.-EUR no-name (www.thomann.de / harley benton) 7 String guitar in Germany and was surprised that this guitar is on par with the Korean Ibanez RG models. Seeing that this guitar is also Asian made (not sure right now if it was China or Korea)(wood also unknown) I saw that for a little more I can get something similar with really good looks.

Green Swirl, Vine Inlay and everything.... well let's see ....
