yup all the time m8, I`ve tried to do it the other way round and come up with lyrics that I can write the music around but I might get a few lines then I get a hook on the music and it starts all over again and before I know it I`ve written the song and only got two or three lines of lyrics laugh.gif

What I tend to do these days is give the song to a friend of mine whos better in that department than me, and I`ll twist about what shes written, I may give her the idea that I`ve had for a chorus etc coz thats usually my starting point for a song, gives me a good starting point anyway.

You spend hours and hours practicing playg guitar, but do you put the smae amount of time onto practicing writing lyrics? Or do you just sit down and try and write a song? I have the same problem for the same reason smile.gif

I like to play acoustic guitar or harmonica and if i get a groove going i will just blurt out nonsensical lyrics. Eventually I can work it into some kind of decent lyrics? But I am very new to this and want to keep at it some more.

When I was doing vox for my band I would almost always during the day have a small notepad or voice recorder with me ( quite often both ). As things would pop into my head for lyric ideas I would capture them. After a while ideas start coming more frequently.

Just like playing guitar bro - If you practice 1 hour per week you're not going to have the experience under your belt to kick out some serious licks. smile.gif

And for me, I've found that quite often practicing the CAPTURE of ideas is a skill that is separate from the *execution* of those ideas. Capturing a lyric or the idea of a riff is completely different from being able to sing it or play it - and needs to be practiced as well.

yea m8 totally agree to the capture thing, so many times I think of something, maybe scribble something down quickly, but as you say, the execution is totally different, quite frustrating smile.gif

I think that Andrew has a strong point here. If we practise more of our lyrics writing technique than that will get better in time. There are natural born writers, but even they practised for their entire lives to get some great songs. WHen I have an ispiration, a write 5 songs, and when i don`t i write 0. Just like a beginner on a guitar can find some great licks one day, but the next when he wants to play some good licks he can`t because he doesent know how smile.gif

I like that good idea
