Which Guitar Suitable For 9 Year Old?, Don't know what to get.

My son is turning 9 soon and I think he might be ready. He's really into RHCP, Buckethead and our very own Muris. He's always playing my acoustic but it's too big. My other son is a kick-a** drummer and we jam all the time. I think the little guy wants in. Birthday is coming up - I'd like to give this a shot.

I've seen some Ibanez "mini" guitars and some other small guitars, but is that the way to go? Acoustic or electric? Anyone have experience with this situation?

-Kiz

Well don't really know what your son prefers, but I would go for some small electric version if you say he's into rhcp, buckethead and muris. Also if you have an amp already it would be the wisest choice definitely.

Id go electric (with those preferences)- and like you said, a smaller guitar (for a little while).

http://www.geartree.com/pc-898-94-ibanez-g...ric-guitar.aspx - that looks cool, and with a name like ibanez we can't really go wrong (or not too wrong atleast).

I'm sure he'd prefer an electric.

If he's super confident at least I think this Kitty is so cool. I'd get a pink for myself but that's stretching it too far.

I think my friends that got guitars when we were around age 11-12 got them full size.

How about a "musis" looking guitar, Ibanez SA

EDIT: I don't even know if there were mini guitars like Deep Root displays when I was 10-11... omg now I'm depressed. mellow.gif

If he's a 9 year old boy, I doubt he'd like a Hello Kitty guitar... but you never know... blink.gif

How about a ordinary Squier (not the Kitty model)? They are cheap, has that fender sound for RHCP, weighs little and is allaround good quality for the money.

Squier has a mini strat, which is good for smaller hands I think http://www.zzounds.com/item--SQU310100

I'd get him a full size and let him grow into it. Kids can play full size guitars. Just don't get them something too heavy. Maybe a Squire is the way to go as they're light and great for RHCP.

Yeah a Squire would be perfect I believe. My brother got a 3/4 sized guitar for Christmas a good 5-6 years back or so when he was younger and it fit him well and he was around 9 or 10. He didn't really stick with playing though, maybe because of the age and frustration at the time but now he plays bass and he wants me to start helping him out with learning guitar again. But back to the point I think the Squire is a good fit for young kids who want to learn guitar.

The thing is a 9 year old might have too small of hands to use a full sized guitar even if it is a beginners guitar it doesn't mean its 3/4 size so it may be too big. Look into 3/4 sized guitars.

P.S. they may be called something else besides 3/4 sized, thats just what I know them as.

In 2-3 years he will be ready for a full-size guitar, so you might want to invest in one of those. Of course, you might want to get him a 3/4 sized guitar and then, if he sticks at it, get him a new guitar for his 12th birthday or something.

I would go with some nice small acoustic, just for the start, nylon optional.
Those guitars are really cheap, nylon has soft action in general
and still good enough for 9 years old boy
to feel his connection with guitar.
But I don't won't you to go wrong on this one, take him to a music store
and let him try few kid's guitars, start with nylon acoustic.
And if he really isn't interested into acoustic then take him to electric section.
All I'm trying to say that he might be too exposed and confused
with stuff like pots,tremolos,distortion etc.
He is still very young so do it wisely. smile.gif

I agree with Muris, actually this is how I started to play guitar loooong time ago ;-) I started with an acoustic guitar, nylon strings, and had lessons on this one for 5 years, before I switched to electric guitars, like this I learned all the basics, incl. finger picking, reading music and all this stuff. But well, whatever you o for in the end... make sure there is NO Hello Kitty thing on the guitar tongue.gif

The most important thing for him is too feel comfortable with playing a guitar, no matter what it is, and that he likes it straight away. I don't think it should be anything expencive, just something decent to get him started, even if it is nylon acoustic guitar.
