Guitar In-tune Problem

I have a Jackson SLSMG. I just recently changed the strings on it - the SAME type of strings I had on as before. I'm in perfect tune. I play the open E string (for example) and it's fine of course. I move up to the 12 fret and it's a bit flat. I then move up to the 24th fret and it's even flatter.

I've never had problems with this before. I'm trying to keep from paying a pro to do this if at all possible. But I'm also wanting to be very careful as to not damage my guitar. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

It's an intonation issue man. you need to adjust your saddles to either lengthen or shorten the string. This is a perfectly normal problem so don't worry. smile.gif

Adjust your intonation with the bridge saddles; move them back to increase the string length and flatten the tone or shorten it to make the tone sharper. Check the strings intonation on the 12th fret and with a natural harmonic at the 12th fret.

If you have never done this before then look for tutorials on youtube!

May not the new string set worry you - it often happens that the strings don't lay in the same way as those before them did, so intonation goes bad. This happens specially on the bass strings. Not sure why, but I think it has to do with wounding and imperfect string "surface", so the string makes random contact with bridge.

Yes you can^^

Each string rests on a little saddle, THAT is what needs to be moved!
You move them by turning the screw it is sitting on to push it forward or pull it back...

Oh my, i don't think i know how that works. They (little saddles) are all at different settings as you can see. I don't know how that all operates. I 've looked on youtube, but everybody seems to have the other bridge types.

Zakk is explaining it to you pretty clearly. If you feel like you still don't understand, my suggestion would be (and if possible) to go and have the guitar properly set up by a tech and ask if he minds if you watch. That way you learn some very valuable info, your guitar will play awesome and it's not going to cost you but a few bucks.

Or just do as I did and start turning screws. Trial and era will set you free.. laugh.gif

Well, okay, we'll see......

laugh.gif Hey cool! I got the high E string to work correctly. I guess I'll just have to adjust them individually and it won't affect the other strings. I'm assuming that it won't affect them. Thanks! I'll post my victory when I get it right. smile.gif

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif I did it! It's in tune all over the neck! A tedious - but fairly easy - job to do! smile.gif smile.gif Thank you all for the help! Wonderful community! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif wink.gif See y'all around! (y'all is what we say in Arkansas of the US) tongue.gif
