Hi everyone! As the topic suggests, I am thinking about acquiring a third electric guitar.
My main axe is the beloved Schecter Devil Custom - A link to some random shop with guitar photo and specification

The second axe is an old Ibanez RG370B. I didn't sell this guitar as it is my first electric guitar, and I wouldn't get much money for it anyways, so instead I lend it to few of my friends that were in need of an electric guitar and had no money to buy a proper one.

The Ibanez was not really my kind of a guitar, first few days with my Schecter and I already liked everything about it more than the RG. Also, the Tremolo in the Ibanez was a really pain in the *** for me, it never stayed in tune and changing strings took me ages. That is one of the reasons why I bought my Schecter without a Floyd Rose.

Years have passed, and I would really like to add the Floyd Rose to my playing, so am pondering the possibility of buying another guitar.

Being greedy and having problems with spending big chunks of money, I am also considering buying a 7-8 string with a Floyd Rose. That would give me two new tools in one package. But I don't really know/understand the advantages and disadvantages of 7-8 string guitars (besides the uber obvious advantage of having those additional strings that make playing low/heavy riffs easier/possible).

As for now I don't really have any specific guitars/brands in mind, I even think about a possibility to buy another Schecter Devil Custom with Floyd Rose. That would be a safe strategy, because I would like the shape and look of the guitar for sure... But I think a different guitar would benefit my gear experience more... As for my "looks" taste, I have two opposite preferences:
1. Elegant, classic look like Les Paul / Unpainted "wooden" strat
2. More unorthodox shapes (I think my Devil Custom is a bit unorthodox shape, I don't like very wicked shapes like a coffin guitar:P) and wicked paintjobs.

The budget is up to 2000$, I could throw in more, but think that this is already very big sum of money considering how "advanced" my guitar career is wink.gif Of course the guitar would be used in Hard Rock/"not so black and deadly" Metal subgenres.

Any suggestions?tongue.gif

First off I'm going with this. I am not an expert of a 7-8 stringer. I've owned (2) 7 strings, Schecter Loomis and an Ibanez RGD2127z. Of the 2 I liked the RGD better due to the added string and the width of the neck it felt more natural holding with my tiny hands. The Loomis was great as well just not a fan of the neck. I had 0 problems with either of them once they got setup. Needless to say I don't own either one of them nor am I let down in doing so. Just never really picked the guitars up other than to play a few songs by people who use 7s. So my opinion is pretty solid on not buying a 7 unless you have the chance to kinda borrow one and see if it out shines the other guitars.

I once owned an ESP/LTD Alexi-600 great overall guitar. Loved the guitar other than I like playing sitting down and its a V. If I'm correct Schecters and LTD that are factory made are actually made in the same factory. I know the neck of the LTD felt like older Hellraisers with the rose inlay. Which I would love to sit down and try an EC-1000 myself as its a LP copy but lighter and thinner neck. Maybe one day I shall go check one out.

Maybe something like a Jackson Kelly, weird but not over the top crazy looking body. Should come equipped with a Floyd Rose as well.

With that kinda cash limit I would say the Sky is your limit!

I like my 8 string Ibanez, I mostly use it for studio never gigged it.

THere are many times that I`ve said using my Les Paul, I wish I could extend lower and with the 8 string I can.

I`m still trying to find the right pickups for it.

if you like your shecter ( and I love mine) ,I would go for the 7 string hellraiser(a little more versatile than the loomis) version with floyd, can you get to a place to try one out, that extra string will feel weird for about a month but then it will feel like home

Had a chat with my luthier few days ago about floyd guitars and he specifically told me (specially used) to stay away from the lower-end schecter guitars. Current ibanez line though even affordable has solid floyd type bridges.

As for the floyd system, you probably know they can be locked or work like vintage trem.s (only dive) with simple mod.s. I play mine locked and actually like the feel+ use the fine tuners. A locked floyd bridge only needs delicate tuning if needed until the strings get old, tuning stability is as good as it gets...

For guitar though, I agree you should spend a day or 2 with a 7 string to get the feel before you start trying various guitars.

Some great advice so far smile.gif Per usual, I'll say try to get to one or two music shops even if it means a long drive and put your hands on any guitar you are actually thinking of buying. I"ve never spent that much on a guitar, but if I was going to I'd make sure that I played it for a bit first. Would sure be lame to blow 2k on a guitar based on recommendations and then hate it.

For that amount of money, you could buy a couple of really nice used guitars. Or a nice used guitar and a used axe fx or what not. But some folks want that new guitar smell smile.gif That sadly wears off, along with half the value of the guitar, as soon as you leave the store with it.

Your in to "custom" money to be honest, so have you thought about one of those custom builds that you cant play until you get it in the mail?

Hey mate smile.gif Why not go into a shop and try ALL the seven or 8 stringed guitars you find there? Make a decision based on what you like, not on what we like? biggrin.gif I learned this from Todd smile.gif If you ask me - I would be curious to try the 7 stringed PRS SE - haven't gotten my hands on that one yet...

I don't have experience with 7/8 strings guitars but the advantage is that you will be able to play very low riffing in the style of Metalcore Mathcore and Djent bands. In the past I had an Ibanez RG520 with Floyd rose and it worked very good, I've never had problems with the system. Regarding what guitar you should choose, I'm with Todd and Cosmin, go to many music stores, try guitars and choose the one that feel more comfortable in your hands. Check if it keeps tuning, if the Floyd rose system is solid, the distance between strings and fret board, tone, etc. Once you find the right one, get back home and think about it a bit to be sure. Sometimes the store situation added to an insistent seller can make you take a wrong decision.

The problem is there aren't many music shops in my city, and they tend to have only few brands and little variety. I would probably have to drive for 3 hours to the capital, and find a better shop there:/ And it's also psychological, I feel guilty when I go to a shop, ask for 10 guitars to try out and then leave without any purchase unsure.gif

Just start out with whats available in your area, we all started somewhere on 7 strings. My first 7 string was an ibanez Universe model and those times I'm pretty sure I wouldn't distinguish the difference of a good to super nice guitar smile.gif

Neck shape, tone etc. should be your later concerns first just find and play any decent setuped 7 string an at least run some scales, play solo's you're familiar on regular guitars...the neck is wider so its important if you feel you can get used to it or hate it. If liked, then consider trying 7 string options. You might even end-up buying an affordable one who knows...

Oh and don't worry about the shop attitude, you're a serious buyer and deserve to check every guitar you want. If the sales guy (assuming he's good at his job) understands you're serious about buying a guitar he will want(!) to help you as long as you need.

Just about what I was to say smile.gif Products such as guitars, are in a shop, in order for users to test them and see what they like. You be a good man and go test EVERY axe there smile.gif Make a choice based on facts and your needs, all rounded by your budget. In that way, you will NEVER feel sorry for making a bad choice!
