GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ I Just Broke My String

Posted by: Adrian Figallo Jul 20 2011, 03:13 PM

Hey guys, i just broke my first string, so, that means i have to get a new pack for my flying v smile.gif, i have been an ernie ball user for a long time, i use this set on all my guitars, because i like it, but mainly because i have always use it.

Now im wondering, what strings do you guys use and why? im not looking to change gauge necessarily (i use 10's), but maybe there is something better? i wanna try something new smile.gif

BTW this are the strings:

I love elixirs. They last forever.

i tried them on an ibanez bass, but they felt a bit plasticky? or it was me?

Posted by: MonkeyDAthos Jul 20 2011, 03:44 PM

i use the same as you Adrian - 0'11 on my SG and 0'9 on the Jackson

Same gauge and brand as you, man. No problems.

Elixir 09, and Ernie ball 010 ! Is there some other brands? tongue.gif

Posted by: Adrian Figallo Jul 20 2011, 05:00 PM

i knew they rock, i was curious but looks like im sticking with the green eagle, maybe trying some elixirs but that plastic feel i felt on the bass with elixir turns me off.

Go with Elixirs man biggrin.gif I'd never trade them for anything smile.gif

I used the same Ernie Ball strings you do, Adrian. I still stick with Ernie ball, but went for the 11 - 54s, since I detune to drop D or Eb quite often...never broke any of these wink.gif

I use the same set but Hybrid 10's

10-52 .. Higher strings feel like 10's and the lower strings are like 11's, good for metal!

so guys, thanks for all the input, i used the hybrid set also and i prefer the 10's, so now im trying elixir hope they dont feel that plastic as the bass ones tongue.gif

I use Ernie Ball 9-42 (the pink packet) and I very rarely break strings prematurely. They make break sometimes but then I do have them on for months at a time so they are at the end of their life anyway.

I've never needed to go elsewhere cool.gif

In my opinion there's no such thing as a string that won't break ! wink.gif

I figure I will break the 1st string a few times, so I buy spares.

But thanks for the Elixir rec everyone. I had thought to try those but they were pretty expensive. I see you can get them for as little as $8 free shipping on Amazon. It appears to me that only the wound strings are materially different with Elixir.

Dean Markley for me. I admit for me they only last maybe 2 months if I stretch it, but the tone is so bright and clear, and they feel so good underneath your fingers.

i had some deanmarkelys as a free sample when i bought my bare knuckle pickups, i like them a lot but the first broke in like 5 days or something ohmy.gif

I use Ernie Ball Super Slinkys 9-42's. I tried jumping around Elixir, Clear tones, D'adarrio etc... always came back to the Balls. Pink Pack.

i am trying right now, to be honest i prefer the Ernie Ball 0'11 on my SG but Dean Markley pwn alot more on my Jackson than the Ernie ball's i use to had on it, not only in "sound" but in feel also.

A fine choice smile.gif I really dig the Ernie Super Slinky 9s. Pink pack every time. They make a KILLER seven string sing as well. Same set just with a low B which is Deeeeeeep. I've tried about every string on the market and keep coming back to the Super Slinky sets. They just break less and feel a bit better IMHO. But to each his own, some folks HATE slinky string and just refuse to use.

My favorites are D'Addarios 11's. They're bright and clear and the bass strings "pop" with high gain. I do tune down half a step so they're very playable.

Posted by: Adrian Figallo Jul 22 2011, 03:15 AM

sometimes i use D'Addarios too, i find them very similar to the ernie balls.

D'Addario .10-.46
