Korg Pandora might be the answer here! It works on batteries and the quality of the tones is great. The seem to have the mini version out : http://www.korg.com/pandoramini

You already received the best suggestions for this. My brother has Pandora mini and it's really good because you also have metronome and drum loops for practice. You can also connect a mp3 to play over backing tracks. Using Iphone as Mroberts said is also a good option because you also have metronome, drum loops and backings.

But...I haven't used it in a long time since almost any amp simulator on an iPhone sounds better. And with Amplitube on the iPhone I can play along to any backing track in my itunes library. The big problem with something like a Pandora or an iPhone is there are no footswitches for selecting patches or turning effects on and off (or at least nothing I would consider practical yet). Even for practicing that can be a problem. That's where a Line6 Pod would be better. In other words something with a midi input so you can hook up footswitches to it, or something with built-in footswitches. There are a variety of Pod models, some have midi input, others don't. Some have aux audio input, others don't. Some have built-in footswitches, others don't.
