Hello

I have been trying to acheive sweep picking for awhile now.I know this is a constant topic here on gmc so i figured i would show a scale or pattern that i have been working on that is helping me improve.

-----------------12--17
---------------14------
--------------14-----
------------14--------
----12--16-----------
----------------------

I believe this is in Am (not for sure). This is the first sweep patern i have accomplished. It's very good practice as well as helping you learn the rolling motion in your finger that is required on the 14th frets. What i do is play this down and repeat the pattern back up.I feel like if you are having problems with sweep it's worth a try and this is the first sweep i have did that makes that fast sound that everyone's after.

It's A MAJOR! smile.gif (it's btw. major pattern so you just move it around the fretboard and it only depends on what note you start it - if you start playing this pattern from C it's C-Major than).

Btw. if it's the first sweep pattern you start to practice you'll get in troubles pretty soon! It's among hardest sweep shape to play and many people avoid it because of muting! So my advice is - if you are new to sweeping - avoid this pattern until you gain enough control of muting with other basic shapes!

Ooh ok i wont practice this then, i will stick to your sweeping basic and sweeping 1 lesson's then. Pavel do you recommend I learn Basic, 1 and 2 at the same time? or get the first one up to speed before moving on to the others?

P.S: the pages on your website aren't working(aren't linking to anything).
Forget that, Firefox was just being dodgy for a minute there.

Thanks Andrew smile.gif

It's funny how this sweep is easier for me and then other ones (that should be easier ) are harder for me.I guess it's just different for everyone.Pavel definatly knows what he's talking about.I take his advice very serious, but i still think if your having problems with the technique it woudnt hurt just to see if you could play it.But if Pavel says not to get stuck in these types of sweeps first then he is more than likley right.

Thanks for your coment

sensation i have noticed, more than anything else, when my sweeps are quality at higher speeds, is a very light touch. that is the best I can describe it. not sure what this means physically, i try not to get too analytical about things like this, been there, done that. i just can describe it as having a very light touch. really with both hands.

With the light touch, comes relaxation. Help your fingers move faster, and more effeciently

I think that's what I am missing for sweeps and faster AP runs - I had a breakthrough in my right hand last week, just need my left hand to follow on ... its funny though, I can do legato a lot faster (I guess since it was all I really played before I come to GMC)

an exercise that has helped me is doing sweeps up and down the fingerboard, similar to Pavel's last lesson, except doing only one sweep in each position, rather than 2. that forces you to do good things. if you do 2 sweeps in each position, the effect is not as strong.

i practice both slower and fast. both where i can keep good quality, and where it is fast crap. i would never let anyone but the dog and the cats hear the fast crap, but i think it is important to exercise fast also, not just quality slow. i do both.

edit: i am not knocking Pavel's lesson. It is a great lesson. Just saying if you also do exercises where you hand has to keep moving, no rests in one spot (as with double sweeps) that is a beneficial exercise for developing a light touch.
