Hi Evilcman!! Welcome to your Gab's Army thread!!

Could you please tell me a bit about you, your musical tastes, influences, strengths and weaknesses? I would need some videos of you playing rhythm and solo guitar, so please post your best material here. If you have some music or ideas of your own, also post them here. Also let me know how you think that I can help you and what are your expectations for our job. You can check the other Army's thread to discover the different modalities of this project.

The principles of our Army are:

+ Improve your technique
+ Make music and solos
+ Have fun
+ Destroy the enemy (hahaha not really just kidding... )

Hi!

My musical taste:
I was always kind of a metal head, I am a huge fan of german power metal.. But over the years my
musical tastes have become broader and now include jazz, world music etc. Some of my favourite
albums, in no particular order:
Blind Guardian - Somewhere far beyond
Stratovarius - Visions
Nevermore - The Politics of Ecstasy
Queen - Jazz
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Beatles - Abbey Road
Buddy Guy - Sweet Tea
Moonsorrow - Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
King Crimson - In The Court of The Crimson King
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Death - Human
Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick
Avantasia - The Scarecrow

Some of my favourite guitar players:
Jon Schaffer, Joe Satriani, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore, Andy LaRocque,
Chuck Schuldiner, Uli Jon Roth, Django Reinhardt, Chet Atkins, Trey Azagthoth, George Benson

My shorter term goal is to get my basic metal rhythm guitar playing together, my longer term goals
are getting good at improvisation and getting some knowledge and practice in song composition. In
the process I would also like to improve my overall technique. smile.gif

I have never recorded myself playing, but I will try to record a few videos this weekend.
A was thinking of learning one of your german power metal lessons, recording it, to show my
rhythm playing and recording myself impovising a solo over a 12 bar blues progression. That should
be an OK start.

Hi mate! That's an amazing list! I will wait for those videos! But also let me know what's your knowledge about scales and improvisation?

I know more music theory than most guitarists at my level (approximately: at this site I can play the 3-s, and have a chance
at the 4-s), maybe you could say theory is my strong point, but my technique is not at a level where I can benefit from this knowledge.
In theory I know the modes of the major scale, the 3 minor scales, blues scale, some important chord progressions, but I have
little experience using this theoretical knowledge. The scales I actually have some experience playing (improvising) are:
- minor pentatonic
- major
- natural minor
- harmonic minor
- dorian
- blues
- diminished

I am really unsatisfied with my technique:
- I have trouble doing bends in pitch
- I can not realy vibrato a bended note well
- I can not play clean and fast at the same time

I love heavy metal, but I completely neglected rhythm guitar playing until now. I have to change that.

Ok. So, I can not record with a backing track for know, I have a severe latency problem with my current hardware.
I only have an integrated soundcard for now, and I can't get it to work well enough. I tried ASIO4ALL, didn't help
enough. The soonest I can buy new driver is when I get my scholarship for this month smile.gif (I am a university student,
and I don't have too much money...) So, I learned your Edguy lesson, but can't show it, yet... sad.gif(

But I still wanted to show at least some of my playing, so I tried improvising over a 12 bar blues progression, completely
alone, no backing track (so I don't have to worry about latency), I do both the chords and the melody. This turned out
to be a quite hard task, and I am not satisfied with the results, but still, I would like to show it. It's here:

Sorry for crappy quality. What do you think?

Hi mate! Thanks for the video and for the info! The video is very good, we can work with that quality! It's weird that Asio4all is not helping, have you tried changing its settings? (the buffers). You said you are having problems with bending and metal rhythm?
Let's start working on this two lessons:

What do you think?

Both lessons sound great! As soon as I figure out a good, reliable way of overdubbing at home I will post a take of these two lessons,
and also your Edguy lesson (which is also good for rhythm guitar).

The problem with ASIO4ALL, altough the latency gets better, the sound quality really sucks, it cracks and makes strange
noises... If I use direct sound the quality is OK, but the latency is awful...

I see, are you using a VST amp simulator?

I think I finally managed to make it work. I tried to measure the latency, shift the whole track
with the measured latency, mute the sound of my guitar coming from the PC, and use a different
set of speakers for live sound. This is not too pretty either, but it has a better sound quality than I
had with ASIO4ALL and Amplitube.

I attached an mp3 of my take of your Edguy lesson.

What do you think? Will this sound quality be good enough? Also, how is my rhythm playing? I
don't like it, to be honest, this lesson still needs some work.

I will soon post a take of the lessons you suggested as well, but now I really have to get to sleep... smile.gif

Hi mate! I'm glad to know that you finally could fix the latency issues! This quality is enough to work here! and I think that we can still work on your guitar tone! Please let me know what you use for guitar tone.

Your rhythm technique is not bad, the lesson is ok but as you said, you have to continue practising it to make it sound tighter. Also, it seems that your palm muting is a bit weak, but it's difficult to find the correct muting with this tone, that's why I would like to help you to improve it.

Hi!

I'm officially frustrated now. The nut on my guitar broke. I took it to a technician, he will replace it. I also asked for a setup.
That should improve my tone a little at least, but that also means I can not practice for some time. sad.gif I will be back with some new takes
after that.

Hi mate! Don't worry, this i something positive. Your guitar will be ready to rock again soon.

and maybe, these days you could learn some theory from here:

what do you think?
