GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Which Band You'd Wish To Like...

Posted by: Kapto Aug 1 2008, 11:33 AM

Have you ever listened to a band and left it and come back and give it another try and another and another but never gets you and you wish that that band would be among the others you like but for some reason never works.
Mine would be RUSH. I can never get used to the bass/singer. I love the music but can't stand the voice at all and god knows I tried and I tried to get used to..............but no... it won't happen sad.gif

Posted by: InThePast Aug 1 2008, 12:00 PM

Yes that happens to me alot cant remember the exact band names but ive tried listening to lots and just never gone back

Posted by: stickyfingers Aug 1 2008, 12:14 PM

racer x -.-

i hate his voice. sounds like a squeezed frog :/

Posted by: Matt23 Aug 1 2008, 12:43 PM

It was DT and Steve Vai, but not anymore. I find that for example i'll not like listening to someone like Greg Howe, and then when i heard Guthtie Govan who was more on the rock side of fusion (i think) i started liking Greg Howe.

Posted by: Smikey2006 Aug 1 2008, 01:35 PM

Led Zepplin.. it seems everyone is a led zepplin fan.. not me, just can't do it.. i would love to be able to talk led zepplin with people and have something good to say but i can't, their alot like metallica to me, when they first came out they did something original which grabbed the attention of everyone, but now that rock and metal are common practice they just seem really generic to me because they never advanced past that original state. or maybe they did and i just didn't notice biggrin.gif

Posted by: JVM Aug 1 2008, 03:33 PM

Dream Theater and Rush. In both cases, love all the musicians, can't stand the singing.

Posted by: stickyfingers Aug 1 2008, 03:48 PM

i forgot to mention dream theater - again issues with his voice while i like their riffing. ;D

Posted by: ZakkWylde Aug 1 2008, 03:49 PM

Nevermore because Warrel Dane's voice is damn annyoing but the music rules, and Buckethead because 10% of his music is brilliant and the other 90% are just noises and annoying sounds...

Posted by: Alex87 Aug 1 2008, 03:53 PM

The 2 big artist i never really liked have to be Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.
And i can agree on the voice in Rush and DT aswell.

I used to really not like either of them as well, but now I love them both. Any particular reason why?

Posted by: superize Aug 1 2008, 04:02 PM

Iron Maiden. I have tried to listened to them because everybody else like them but i stop right away and i dont know why

Posted by: blindwillie Aug 1 2008, 04:04 PM

Yes that happens alot.
Recent examples are Wolfmother and Airbourne. I know I'm supposed to love them but I simply don't.

I really digged in their music style and listened to many of both artists songs, and played them aswell. There ofcourse are a few songs i liked compared to other, but i just think in general their style isn't much what im about (dare i say boring, just an opinion) tho i have a very huge taste for almost all music

Posted by: Fsgdjv Aug 1 2008, 05:16 PM

Actually, no, there are no bands like that. I don't see why anyone would like to like a band they don't like.

Amazing topic! I remember that when I was 15 (11 years ago) I wanted to like Dream Theater and used to listen to Images and Words only enjoying the song Pull me under. I always gave it new chances and never get convinced of the other sons.... so I tried with another abum.. Awake, In the first auditions happened the same to me but then I started to remember the melodies the solos and finally I loved it. Then I became a DT fan and started to enjoy all their albums.

Posted by: stickyfingers Aug 1 2008, 06:17 PM

there should be a workshop on mixing out bad singing in otherwise perfect songs tongue.gif

Posted by: Kapto Aug 1 2008, 10:36 PM

DT got me straight away. I borrowed A Changed of Seasons. The first thing that really got me was M Portnoy. I thought wow what a drummer then the sound so clean and accurate playing. I bought Images and Words and Metropolis just blew me away then I bought Awake. For many DT fans the best album but not for me at all. I don't like La Brie forcing his voice that's why some parts sound right to ones and wrong to some others it's a matter of taste really.
The band I am happy now with is Symphony X. It has taken me a long while but finally I love them very much wink.gif. Right now it's the band I play the most.
.....and still don't like RUSH what a waste of a nice music mad.gif

Posted by: black and white Aug 1 2008, 10:49 PM

HAPPY TO BE ALONE ON THIS.......LOVE RUSH

Also had the opportunity to spend some time with them years back in a non musical setting and they were super, super nice.

Grew up in high school listening to rush and still have great memories of them.......

Posted by: vintageplaya666 Aug 1 2008, 11:31 PM

This might suprise everyone, but for me its Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I dont like the voice of the singer, and most of the songs annoy me, such as Give It Away.

The only song I can actually listen to by RHCP is Californication and thats it. The rest I really can't get into

Posted by: Kizaze44 Aug 1 2008, 11:43 PM

Dave Matthews and Phish - can't stand them but my 3 brothers love them. Why not me???!!?! I've really tried!!

Posted by: VinceG Aug 2 2008, 12:00 AM

Hmm, probably Zeppelin and Iced Earth.

Posted by: Rated Htr Aug 2 2008, 04:21 AM

Guns and Roses...(I think somebody will kill me for this). Pretty much the same Kapto said about RUSH.

Posted by: Slammer Aug 2 2008, 04:37 AM

For me I'd have to say... DT, While I've listened to alot of their songs, I've never really been able to get into them so much.

Posted by: Bedlam Aug 2 2008, 04:40 AM

Neurosis, DT and Rush...

Posted by: Xicoria Aug 2 2008, 06:01 AM

For me something inverse happened...

I use to listen a lot Kreator. Now, I dont manage to keep the CD on more than a minute... what is that? My age, do I became an old man?

The music of Iced Earth is just too boring for me.

The new album also sucked hard, but thats also coming from a guy who can't like anything Iced Earth have done.

Talking about bands that are ruined by the singer tho, my vote goes to Megadeth.

Another 1 here.. Fear Factory + Divine Heracy.. i absolutly love the 8 string guitar riffs, they are heavy but the vocals just make me wanna cry.. for both bands, they have songs i can tollerate but they both just remind me of a worst version of messugah ( Note: Divine Heracy and Fear Factory are basically the same band biggrin.gif)

Hope I don't offend anyone here, but Led Zeppelin, Opeth, Iron Maiden, Guns n' Roses, Van Halen, and AC/DC. They all seem like completely average musicians making completely average music, and don't understand how any of them became famous.

It happens that some time you come across an interesting band that gets your attention for a while but for some reason there's something musically that is not of your taste or you're not used to it and you put it off. Later on you for some reason someone loves that band and tells you why or you read good reviews of a certain album and you decide to give it another try. Thanks to that I'm into bands that I really love now. Latest case ---------Symphony X----------- Some others never worked. Most of the time happens not to be the right time but as you grow older your tastes vary I'm sure it'll happen to you like everybody else.
That's why I don't see this threat so stupid.

I will disagree due to the fact that these bands have written some of the greatest songs of our age. Perhaps they are average Guitarists or Drummers, but as far as musicianship goes this is why they have become famous. Catchy songs and great riffs for bands like AC/DC, Led Zepplin, Guns n' Roses. Infact most really good rock bands don't get good because they are technical but just because they write great music. Opeth i am not offended so much as want to convince you they are something else. My Challenge is for you to go out and find me a band that sounds like them. Find a deathmetal vocalist who can sing as cleanly as Michael Akerfelt and growl better than any other growler ive heard, find a drummer who mix's latin beats with blastbeats to create some epic drums to cover spans of up to 10 minute long songs. Find me music this beautiful and this unpredictable and ill say okay your right Opeth is un original and does not deserve the fame they get.. but im pritty sure this is a challenge you cannot win smile.gif

P.S if you say between the buried and me i will agree that they are intence, but they are nothing like opeth smile.gif

As for ironmaiden, they seem average until you realise they are the first of their kind, Iron Maiden is the cause of Heavy Metal (IMO!) When they started it was new, and you have to treat them as though every band you hear that sounds like Maiden probably just ripped off Maiden biggrin.gif

Im not trying to attack you i just have different opinions and they are stated above smile.gif

You've missed my point. Everyone has not liked a band, then come back to them and then liked them. That's normal. But to wish to like a band that you clearly don't is stupid. The only reason I can see for this is to fit in with other people, which is pathetic. If you don't like a band you don't like them. Simple as.

Posted by: TheOldOnes Aug 6 2008, 01:24 PM

Yeah, some of the choices we make are pretty strange. For instance, my favourite music to play along with is easily Iron Maiden - yet I can't stand Bruce Dickerson's voice (I prefer their first singer despite his - in just about every respect - poorer voice). Furthermore, half of their songs are simple awful - yet some are so fun to play along with, I always return to them (examples like The Trooper, Phantom of the Opera, Wrathchild, Remember Tomorrow, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Alexander, Blood Brothers, Paschendale are just very nice songs).

Love Rush up to Moving Pictures - can't seem to bring myself to listen to their later stuff.

It does seem to be a pattern though with what people like and what they can like. If the non-vocal part of the band is something that interests you, you can overcome or become used to most voices but the reverse is rarely true (although I sure have alot of problems listening to many of these death metal bands).

Does anyone have any examples of bands they like because of the singer's voice but had to make an effort to listen to the backing instrumentation?

Lol "..........and don't understand how they became famous".
I hope this is a joke or you must be a hell of a musician then. cool.gif
Could you imagine yourself traveling in time to 1976-78 and see Van Halen playing Eruption for the 1st time?
Even J petrucci and company Played Zeppelin,Maiden---what a waste of time for such a guitar player, isn't it?
I guess playing 3 chord beetles songs must be some kind of lower than average.
No ofense . Just trying to make you see a point here. Hyper fast, louder or complicated doesn't mean is the best composition or the most talented musician. The bands named above came up with a new sound or playing style that never ever anyone had heard before.
Sorry. But I just felt like saying something about it wink.gif

I gotta disagree BIG time. Everyone can have their opinions ofc, but i think it's worth remembering that Petrucci also got inspired by some of these bands, and even tho I personally can't seem to hear it in Mr. Petruccis 256 bmp shred solos (which i find below avarage, music wise), I heard him say that he got influenced by them. Personally I think that what these bands make is much above average (Iron Maiden espcially said from a hardcore fan lol), and they are famous for making great music, performing and keep been creative! smile.gif

I agree with your disagreeing!

You have to look at these bands through the lens of the time they were playing - at that time they were the absolute forefront in terms of style. Monster guitar technique came along later, or developed further over time depending on your viewpoint comparing today's guitarists with those guitarists isn't really fair.

Many posts have answered you on this, I wont repeat them. I'll just add that music isn't about techical skill, it's about creating emotions. To me the better musician is the one that makes me feel something. Not the one that plays totally technically perfect. Can't you just enjoy it because of that, regardless of what you think of the individual skills? Because it rocks?

If you can't, you are really missing out on something.

Bands I want to like, but I don't? None tongue.gif
I'm dead serious when it comes to music, so if I don't like a band, I don't want anything else to do with them. Fair enough, I might like a song or two (example: Dragonforce - Valley of the Damned), but if the band don't grip me, I stay away from them and stick to my opinion no matter how many people I might argue with tongue.gif

for example:-

Generals gathered in their "masses" just like witches at black "masses"?

What you could'nt think up anything that rhymed with masses except masses? Jeeesus!,

Oh but the Dio era Sabbath is amazing!

I understand how you feel about it and why, but BS without Ozzy just ain't BS.
They aren't a fav of mine but I have to acknowledge their role in the development of rock.

One thing that disturbs me is the star vs. lifestyle thing. I mean, If a great artists live a "bad" life , should I take a stand and reject them and their art or just appriciate them for their work?

I put "bad" in quotes" because I don't want to judge if anyones life is good or bad if they live it by their own choosing.
But bad from the view of what's accepted in our society. Mayby I should use "criminal" instead, but all "bad" living isn't covered by laws. Anyway, a life that damages their own or others bodies, minds or properties. Or something like that. It was hard to formulate that.

This topic caught my attention, I've been reading every post and strangely I understand everyone's point of view.

For Instance I understand how someone could feel Maiden is simple and boring, and at the same time understand why other think it is a great band.

Even though Dream Theater might be annoying to some because of their crazy tempo/meter/scale changes and super fast solos, combined with a pop/rock soft voice, they are a great unique band that broke rules and delivered a new sound.

Even though Black Sabbath with Ozzy was primitive sounding, it also broke the rules and delivered a new sound that shaped heavy metal.

Yeah Van Halen is simple, however more than likely he influenced your favorite guitarist.

My point is there is no right or wrong here, we will all have a few bands or musicians we don't like. I have quite few, but even though I do not like their sound I have respect for what they have done for music, and I will never say that they suck, or that I don't understand why people like them.

Rolling Stones
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Alice in Chains

Again I am not saying these bands suck, I personally don't feel anything when I listen to them, don't know why, and I have tried, not to fit in, but because they have worldwide recognition, are admired by many, and I believe I am missing something.

When I hear what others hear, I will be a better musician, that is what I think, so I keep trying and listening.
