GMC Forum _ Recording _ 2x12 Cabs With Mixed Speakers

Posted by: Scott Gentzen May 30 2008, 05:37 PM

I'm looking at getting a 2x12 cabinet that will likely have two different speakers in it.

I was wondering if anyone has had success in getting a satisfactory recording of the sound with only one mic. I'm going to experiment with mic placement anyway but it would be interesting to hear any tips if anyone has them.

The ideal solution would be to one mic directly recording each speaker but that's probably not really an option at the moment.

Since you have only one microphone, then you have smaller number of options. Put it centered on both speakers and compare what sounds better. Also other options include putting it off centered, and maybe mixing sounds from speakers to a degree. Needs a lot of experimenting.

Amp doesn't have a line-out. It's an Epiphone Valve JR. biggrin.gif I'm still working on acquiring the 2x12 cabinet.

My normal amp is a solid state 1x12 combo. It doesn't have a line-out but it does have a headphone jack. My recordings come out a lot better when I just use my mic and crank the amp. Letting the amp do the work amplifying the signal instead of the amp on the audio interface. Haven't done a ton of experimenting with it yet since I've been kinda busy.

This week I should be playing with it more. Trying to get some stuff together that I wouldn't be too embarassed to show to people.
