GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Skynyrd Ruled The World

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Dec 1 2010, 11:11 AM

Southern rock has overwhelmed the world since the 70's. Lynyrd Skynyrd has been one of the most influential southern rock bands to this day. Check out Deness' new "http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Southern-Skynyrd/" lesson today.

Let us know which tune you dig the most? Where were you when you first heard it? How old where you when you first heard it?

The first Skynyrd song I remember hearing was "That Smell"; this was when I was about 7 or 8 years old. My mom used to sing it to my uncle, who reportedly had a severe flatulence problem at the time.

Most people probably first heard Sweet home Alabama.

I remember one day in 1994 I think, I layed in my sofa and listening to a mixed tape with classic rock tunes my friend made me. I fell asleep and in my dream I heard this CRAZY guitarsolo that went on forever. Some days later I remembered that dream and searched the tape for some crazy guitar solo, and of course I found it.........Freebird. smile.gif

One of my favourite bands for sure.

I voted Sweet home alabama, though Freebird is a close second wink.gif

Of course the first song I heard of Skynyrd was Sweet Home Alabama, but Free Bird just blew me away when I heard it and is still my favourite.

Oh my God, what a list of songs. This is impossible to choose smile.gif) Dunno, Alabama is legendary, although I like Tuesday's Gone too. OFC Freebird is awesome as well.. biggrin.gif

its cheesy to pick freebird, but the solo is just amazing. smile.gif

Simple Man...without a doubt. Tuesday's Gone would be my second pick though!

Weird timing! My pick from that list is also a song that was in my head all last weekend after watching Dazed and Confused for the zillionth time and then again today because just this morning Jesse (he might still be around here on GMC) sent me a link to a live performance of it.

Tuesday's Gone. Sweet Home & Freebird are good but they get a little tiresome.

My older brother was really into Lynyrd Skynyrd when we were growing up so they are one of the first guitar oriented bands that I was exposed to. I had most of their albums on vinyl back in the day. The ones you listed are definately some of my favs, but I voted "other" probably just cause there were so many "less commercial" tunes from Skynyrd that were just awesome. The song writing, the guitar playing, and how they were able to utilize three guitars very effectively in a band was just killer. I think they have a song called "You got that right" from their last album (before Ronnie Van Zant died in a plane crash) that would rank at the top of the "other" category for me. Check it out if you're not familiar with it.

So hard to choose! Freebird is amazing, as is Simple Man, and Sweet Home Alabama is THE trademark for southern rock, but I've got to go with.....

Tuesday's Gone

Something about that song evokes a beautiful emotion every time I hear it, and that's what music is all about!
