"We'll fix it in the mix" is the biggest lie in Rock'n'Roll, if you record an instrument with a bad sound it will still sound bad in the mix, so make sure you do a proper soundcheck.

Spending the time before recording to really nail the sound is the key of successful recording, and Marcus is 110% right on this one. Musicians should be experienced enough to know exactly what type of sound they need for the recording. Sound tech/producer can help as well here..
