Posted by: Destrucion Mar 27 2009, 06:16 PM

I am playing the guitar for about a year+-, and I recently got into song writing cool.gif

I have no problem with writing the music part.. I know it's not as difficult as writing lyrics.

I really want to start writing lyrics and start to put it all together, but the problem is I don't know where to start! sad.gif

Instrumental songs are good but I'll be happy if someone help me with writing lyrics.

Is there any tutorial for this in GMC ? How do you write your lyrics ?

I really don't know where to start and how to start.. please help me tongue.gif

Thanks in adv!

Sometimes this is the most difficult part for a musician... (it's for me). Writing good lyrycs is something that you have to train (if it doesn't happen naturally) as well as you can train you composing abilities or your creativity. In this case I recomend reading many books, and paying attention to words, sentences and the ideas that you find in songs, magazines, tv, newspaper and always write them in a notebook. Bring this notebook always with you, you can't know when the inspiration can appear.
There are also many books and site that you can check where you'll find different tips about this.

I think that writing in your own language is a big plus. At one hand you probably know the language better and at another hand I know I for one prefer songs in swedish. Gives a little bit of feeling the musicians cares to get his or her music out, not so much about hitting it big time.

I write instrumental music so I wouldn't know how to help you with lyric writing. I know Berklee has some great books for singers and songwriters including 101 starters for lyric writing. Give it a shot !

It is best to sit down and start writing lyrics mate! Nothing helps like writing a lots of lyrics. Most of them will be bad, but it doesn't matter. Great poets made lots of bad songs before they started to make some great songs - it's all matter of hard work. I suggest you pick a subject and write it down. Do it often. Try to practice yourself in writing different styles but on the same subject. For example, write 3 different styles on the same subject and analyze what you wrote, so you can perfect it.
Here's the section on lyrics here on GMC:

Check it out, and see how people write lyrics, and try to do some of yourself, and possibly post them there so we can analyze them! smile.gif
