Picking Hand Basics, Lesson By Ben Higgins |
|
Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.
The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Hi Josch! Welcome to the REC program and congrats on your first take!!
At first I have to say that the quality of your audio and video are great for this workout. It's ok to make it sound lighter in the future, but this is enough to let us monitor your practice and give some feedback. Your overall work on this one is on the right way. I think that your posture is good, and there is nothing to say about your left hand work which looks well. I notice that your timing is not totally precise and I think that there are 2 reasons for this. The first one is obvious: You need more days of practice to make your right hand more comfortable with the rhythm. The second reason is related to your right hand motion. If you analyse it and compare it, for example with Ben's movement in the lesson, you'll see that: - The is some fingers movement here and there. When playing alternate picking, it's essential to start the movement from your wrist, and a bit from your elbow but avoid doing is from your fingers. - You change the movement depending on the speed/figure. At this point, I would try to find one type of movement that works for both slower and faster rhythms. Again, check out your movement for 8th, compare it to 16th and triplets, and then go to the original lesson and notice how Ben's right hand keeps the same type of movement. This is not a must, more a suggestion that you'll really appreciate in the future. Finally, another step would be to put some attention to dynamics, which would be the intensities of your picking. Check how the notes played with the strong beat are accentuated a bit. Ok mate, that's all by now. I hope that these comments help. Feel free to contact me if you have any question. Keep on the hard work!! -------------------- My lessons
