So I'm sitting here bored in my hotel room, wishing I could practice ... I would love to have a guitar that folded up to the size of a pencil, along with an entirely self contained 100w valve amp and effects rig the size of a cell phone, all weighing less than a couple of pounds, but I suspect that they are not available ...
In more realistic terms, does anyone have experience with travel guitars? I would put size as the most important criteria (the smaller the better) - definitely should be small enough to get into a suitcase somehow, and I don't care if the tone sucks as long as I can use it to practice on. Small amps are no problem, marshall got some really small pocket amps. dunno about guitars though

You're the expert on multi effects so I won't say anything in that area About the amp, it has to be a transistor in that case (can't move valve amps around too much because of the risc of the valves breaking). I'll look at both the amps you mentioned, and I'll take your advice of not using a 100W amp in a hotel room

hmmm...
Have you checked out the Escape EG-1 from Traveler Guitars? http://www.travelerguitar.com their tagline for the EG-1 is... " FInally, a guitar that can go from LAX to JFK and back, without getting FKT" Looks kinda cool but I have no idea about it's qualities.... Just something I stumbled across a while back... I doubt that since you were looking for a 100 Wat amp in smalll size that an acoustic is on the menu, but here goes.

Andrew,
I have to spend 4 days in Toronto this coming week and was in the same boat as yourself. Looking to practice while away and not lug around something heavy and loud enough to get yourself in trouble at the hotel. I bought a little Fender "Mini Deluxe" today in town. took it home and fooled with it for a bit. IS not bad and you can get a decent tone at low volume. Not overly loud but good enough. It has a gain control that really cranks it up. almost too much. Lots of gain and sustain. Runs on a 9 volt, has a head phone jack as well. is about 6 x 3 1 /2 x 2 give or take. So for travel will drop in the suitcase. It was $70 on the shelf. Guy gave it to me for $60 (Canadian funds) Would be cheaper to order online but I did not want to wait. Well if you just need some small amp/effect thingy for practising I used to have the Korg Pandorra:

It has all sorts of guitar effects (including harmonizer), metronome, standard rock beats and an integrated looper (I don't remember if it was up to 8 or 16 measures). meaning you can record some short chord progressions and jam to that. I actually sold it for the PXR4, which es basically the same as a 4-track. The sound is ok, the amp sims do not come close to any of the "real" modelers. Looks like there's nowhere to rest my arm and hand and I'm guessing it would be no good. I never played one with that small a body so I really don't know. But for what it is, a travelling guitar, it has to have setbacks you have to cope with.
