GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Your Favourite Science

Posted by: chast Sep 9 2007, 01:46 AM

Hey GMC'ers,

A question just came to my mind and I wanted to ask you this.
What is your favourite science ? Or dont you like science at all ?

For myself it is:
In school it is math.
In my free time (at home tongue.gif) it is physics, more the stuff about theory how the world "works".
So i choose physics smile.gif
I also like chemistry, but I dont understand it biggrin.gif

Phsyics - I got an 'A' at A level and would have picked Phsyics for my degree if I hadn't decided to go into computing smile.gif

Quantum mechanics, unification, string theory, quantum loop gravity, relativity, cosmology - its all amazing to me!

ive always liked reading bout Quantum Phsysics and stuff.

Physics!!

I don't like sicense.... even though I studied both physics and math at the highest school level possible in school, I couldn't stand a minute of it, and skipped alot of classes tongue.gif

Physics. I freakin LOVE watching documentaries/reading science magazines about space and stuff.

Edit: I've never taken any education like this or anything, I just find it really interesting and amazing.

Should be chemistry as I have a Master in it and am Chartered and a member of the Royal Society. But have to say I actually prefer pure maths. I like analytical chemistry but find physical chemistry dull - you can pretty much pass phys chem without knowing the subject provided you can do the maths cool.gif .

However if you wanted to include philosophy as it is the science then philosophy (PhD and I lecture in it and examine at postgrad/PhD level). Philosophy actually gets me to think rather then perform mechanical exercises tongue.gif .

Cheers,
Tony (for what they are worth - BSc BA MBA MA MSc PhD CChem MRSC)

Chemistry for me, I'm still in high school right now but in AP chem which is a college level course. It's gonna be my major and I might go into pharmacy but I'm still deciding.

Biology for me, especially evolutionary biology. I love learning about how life came to be on Earth, and I find it fascinating that we evolved over billions of years from very humble beginnings. I also sometimes wonder what human beings will have evolved to in the next million or so years. cool.gif

Physcis are more interesting than math, but math is more beautiful, it's always exact, while physics aren't. Because of that, I pick math, even though I love both math and physics laugh.gif

Wow dude, you're a heavyweight blink.gif make my BSc(HONS) MBCS CEng look a little low rent laugh.gif

Physics for me as well, although im mathmatically retarded, i still like it.

Posted by: SLASH91 Sep 9 2007, 07:05 AM

mad.gif I hate everything mad.gif

I'm probably best at math though.

Posted by: FretDancer69 Sep 9 2007, 07:13 AM

i love Biology, Chemistry is very interesting too, but its very complicated laugh.gif tongue.gif

Wow, thats cool to see, that so many people like physics.
I only have one or two friends who are interested in physics, the rest is like "Blabla, dont bore me with that stuff" biggrin.gif

I chose physics because it has alot to do with guitar smile.gif Sound and stuff is fasscinating tongue.gif

I'd have to say Biology for me and more specifically Marine Biology. I don't have a degree in it or anthing but studying Sharks has always been a sort of hobby of mine. I read, watch, listen to anything to do with sharks....my fave week of the year is Shark week on Discovery Channel smile.gif . Great Whites are my main focus of interest and I'm actually scheduled for a shark dive next fall....I can't wait.

Edit: I had forgot to vote...done now though

Yeah Marine Biology rocks!!! Also sharks are my favorite animals! tongue.gif biggrin.gif , i plan studying Marine Biology, but i dont think i can study that in my country sad.gif

What I like about Biology, is how the brain works. It is very interessting, if we know why we are dreaming or something else smile.gif
And the brain is so extremly powerful, sadly that we dont use the full potential of it :/

Posted by: VinceG Sep 10 2007, 05:18 AM

isnt study of the brains more of psychology?

Posted by: DeepRoots Sep 10 2007, 05:20 AM

maths for the win! biggrin.gif . studying it atm for my A-levels

Perhaps the dumbest bit of advice I was given when I was at high school by a creerrs teacher was that I would not be able to do marine biology as I was not doing French 'O' level. Seems she only knew about Jacques Cousteau and thought all marine biologists were French rolleyes.gif .

But yes sharks and dolphins and whales are great. Shark dive sounds fab - mentiond the idea to my little girl her comment was 'Wow er but no way am I getting in the water when there are sharks about!'. We live in a world centre for paragliding and she look at paragliders and says 'No way am I ever doing that. They must all be mad!' This is a 7 year old who goes rock climbing, canoing etc each month by the way cool.gif .

Cheers,
Tony

I think it is both.
But for example these "Savants", that people that are given some special talent, for example calculating something like: 28^23 in their head in a few seconds. (Search for RĂ¼diger Gamm, I dont know if there are some english videos, but if you understand german, look him up)
Thats a point were psychology hasnt to do that much. For RĂ¼diger Gamm there is missing a connection or it is very small (im not sure) between the right part and the left part of his brain, so he can calculate like hell.
But I have to say psychology is also very interessting smile.gif

i belive thats the study of the Mind. You might think the brain and the mind are the same thing, but they're not for me. I dont know how to explain it.

LOL! That's too funny Tony....all marine biologists are French.....like the fish know what language your speaking tongue.gif

Yeah I'm extremely excited and frightened to death about the shark dive. I have all intenstions of getting in the cage but I guess we'll have to see when a 15 ft Great White is swimming around banging into the thing....I may chicken out unsure.gif . I was suppose to go next month but some personal stuff came up and I am unable to go so I've rescheduled for next fall. I've loved GWS ever since I was a kid. I would love to go to Australia and dive with Rodney Fox but I'm settling for Mexico as don't have the funds for Australia....but some day maybe.

And by the way your daughter sounds way to cool....it's awesome that your introducing her to such great activities. I'm hoping to do the same for my nephew.

She's a sound little girl - can be really up for adventure sometimes and at others a very girlie girl (if you see what I mean), amazingly rounded individual who keeps surprising me and my wife as to what she can/will do/try out.

Enjoy the dive - sure it will be awesome where ever you do it. Think I'd want more then a cage between me and a gws though blink.gif .

Cheers,
Tony
