GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ How Do I Get In Shape To Be A Rock Star?

Posted by: thefireball Sep 4 2010, 01:27 AM

(No, I don't mean what it might sound like. wink.gif I wanna serve the Lord in my playing..so if I became a "rock star" it would be writing Christian songs.)

I was wondering....what would I have to do to make myself not so fatigued when I rock really hard in my room? As in this http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=36526&pid=498223&st=0&#entry498223 I got really tired after doing this over and over; practicing this before I recorded it.

Is it jogging, weight lifting?....I notice after a hard practice I'm fatigued. I don't get out much, of course, I know that contributes. So should I start jogging? Will that get my heart strong so I can rock hard without being fatigued? Those bands go crazy on stage, ya know....

Your thoughts???

Of course rocking out requires stamina. smile.gif Go out jogging, keep in general shape or just do a few hours of good rocking every day ;D

When you actually get into a band and you have to rehearse for hours - standing, playing and propably also singing you will buil up your endurance. Most of the time reahearsal rooms are quite small and nonventilated so you sweat A LOT, even when you're not even banging or posing...and that really whips you into shape for going onstage!

Lifting weights will only improve your appearance but running could get you some more stamina!

Cool! I would like improve stamina! I shall start jogging. Thanks!

Anybody else have anything to say? wink.gif

Well a lot of bands get their energy from a combination of four things: a mirror, a razor blade, a rolled up dollar bill and... I'll let you figure out the last key component wink.gif

If you're into what you're doing, you'll survive on adrenaline. I have many musician friends that are the unhealthiest people I know, yet once they get on stage can play for 2 hours straight and then play tennis until dawn. The best exercise for any activity, is generally, that activity. So rock your bedroom until the floor collapses!

Cool.... smile.gif I'm feeling inspired. I just gotta get over the neck soreness first. biggrin.gif

I think I'll go around the track at the park tomorrow morning. I'll take it nice and slow at first. wink.gif

All I do is drink beer and play games lol when I'm not playing guitar and our covers band plays 2.5 to 3 hour sets. You don't need to be fit to play guitar lol.

I recommend a routine of stretchings.
Not only hand and arms but the whole body.
I think what you're talking about is the same that happends to me.
No physical activity leads you to be fatigued when you play.

Check videos on you tube I'm sure you'll find some work out stretching videos.

To improve your general stamina, there's nothing better than jogging. Start with 30 minutes every other day, slowly increase the time (up until 60 minutes), then go jogging for 4 or 5 days a week. Keep it slow so you can breath comfortably...
Lifting weights is great as well, so you don't get sore muscles when standing with a guitar for 3 hours.
What I saw just before the Bad Religion concert I went to was that backstage, one of the guitarists (who jumps a lot during the shows) was doing general stretches for the whole body just like Ramiro described.
I suppose you could also just rock every day in your room and get more stamina, but personally I believe all the above mentioned will help your health in general in the long run.

Yes. I will take this advice....heck, even if I don't become a rock star, I will still be a healthy person with much stamina to rock out in my room! biggrin.gif

eat more, lift weights, drink beer, play guitar

you can overdo it tho:

I won't be drinking beer, but I will definitely be working out.

I get tired too quickly at work anyway, so I wanna improve stamina for that reason as well. Actually that's the main reason, even though rocking out in my room was the inspiration.

I just got back from "jogging" a while ago. It was my first time so it was more of a fast walk. My time was 7 minutes and 34 seconds to complete two laps around the 1/4 mi track at the park. My second lap was 7 seconds slower. After this 1/2 mi walk my legs were burning so I stopped. I don't wanna over do it. wink.gif

Well I'm guessing the old '$ex, drugs and rock n roll' motto won't cut it! lol

I go to the gym almost daily, I didn't notice any different at first but it does actually help out a lot with stamina. Great if your going to be running around, jumping up on things and into crowds, and playing blazing fast for hours on end.

I recommend doing some weights (get the heart rate up first) then do 30mins cardio workout (one standing / one sitting) for example jogging, rowing, cycle, etc. Just note, if your planning on exercise, it's a lifestyle comitment, don't half-fast it (that's actual worst than not doing anything at all - as you get bounce back, your body will want to eat more proteins, etc), you need a healthly eatting plan, never diet.

If your umm 'getting some' that's like running a marathon and would be counted. lol

For your fingers, I do have a Light Tension GripMaster (i got free with my old guitar). I honestly don't use it that much, but can help with finger training strength.

A few tip for exercise:
Do weights first before any cardio (you double the workout effect as the weights act as a warm up and get the heart up).
Maintain a heart rate level according to your weight and age.
Don't eat less, you actually want to eat more, but healther foods and fruits, low fat yogurt, etc.
Eat a banana after your workout, it prevents you burning off muscle mass.
You won't actually break a sweet until 20mins into exercise (with your heart rate up), so do at least 25-30mins to notice change.
Don't exercise and stop, exercise and stop, your body will store more weight!
Don't get into a pattern with exercise, change it up from week to week (else your body adapts).
It's best to work out one muscle group at a time (a different group the next day, etc).
If your muscle group is feeling sore, thats good, exercise another group and let it rest, you build the muscle when it's resting.
Have fun and go hard!

Good sleep, good habits such as eating moderately healthy, not drinking to much, little bit of sports.
Those are things that will improve you. On the another hand, sometimes everybody gets tired, we have limited amounts of energy...

Its a very good idea to start working out/going to gym. It will help you with rocking out but also feeling much better and being in shape. You will also need to practice your rocking in the bedroom I guess in order to get better at it and gain stamina.

It will come with some practice and experience.

I pushed myself a little more today. I finished the 1/2 mile walk one entire minute faster than yesterday!

Running, or doing any kind of workouts will help you greatly, not only for stamina on stage, but for general health. I highly recommend it. Of course, when you practice for gigs, practice as-if on stage (standing position, similar movements like on stage, singing etc). After a while, body will get used to those movements, and adapt itself to those situations, so they are not a shock.

Now this is a good advice too! smile.gif You will make your head movements seem much more dramatic if you have long hair wink.gif

Too bad it needs long time to grow wink.gif
