Hey dudes,
Is anyone experiencing extremely slow video download speeds? Ive tested my line and its running a true 2Meg speed. Everything is running fast accept the vids, any ideas???

Yes, I have to agree. The loading times is a bit annoying even though I'm on fiber. I've seen some others with this issue lately too.

Thanks for your response. At least its not just me!

I have this problem BIG TIME. really annoying, but late nights / early mornings ( Swedish time) it loads ultra fast.. So I guess it's just overload.
Posted by: Kristofer Dahl May 9 2007, 02:00 PM
I have no idea what this is...there is no obvious overload on the server, I'll fire of a question to the hosting company.

Everything is just dandy here in beautiful New Jersey.
Posted by: Bitey May 9 2007, 05:33 PM
Well it might be their computer if you don't take care of it certain programs can slow it way the heck down. I am fine for video's and what not.
Posted by: Henrik Skotth May 10 2007, 04:14 PM
The reason for these problems is as follows:
The datacenter in which we have the GMC servers is located in the US, and the connection between this datacenter and Europe is not one with a very high priority. For most European broadband ISP:s, this isn't a problem since they themselves have redundant bandwidth over the atlantic, and have chosen to use that to communicate with the networks that the GMC servers are using. For a few ISP:s however (including Telia in sweden, which I use at the moment), this connection isn't a priority (obviously their managers aren't guitar players ). This means that whenever I or anyone else of you who are having problems get something sent to us from GMC, our data has to wait in line until a lot of other (higher priority) data has passed. That's why it's slow.
We do, of course, have a solution to this though (we are, after all, mighty super heroes), which will hopefully roll out in the coming weeks. So stay with us and stay tuned - change is coming!

YAAARRRGH! Why me!
I'm not sure about your last conclusion. An extensive investigation amongst the members of GMC indicates that ALL computer-related people plays guitar! Might be that Telia put the QoS hex on their customers so Telia-technicians get the videos in good speed themselves.

But when I told Kris that, he said that I'm not a real man unless I have a connection that's 100Mbit both upstream and downstream

This is absolutely true!
I have been away on business for the last 2 days. We met with a customer (who plays bass and drums, and has a recording studio). With me was the account sales manager (Who has a strat and several acoustincs and a recording studio), and a new Sales Engineer I am training (who has a strat and several other guitars and a recording studio).
The worst of it was, I told the new guy I wanted a Jem because Pavel has got me lusting after them and the unspeakable son of a gun went out and bought one for himself last weekend!!!!!

Besides, Kris, you don't t even HAVE a lawn... what does that make you?

Ok i noticed something about video loading speed. Sometimes it loads very fast and sometimes it's a turtle speed. I guess it has something to do with the number of students at GMC at certain time like - server overload or server free. I wonder what internet speed do you guys have...

Actually, most of the time the server doesn't have that high a load, so that shouldn't be it. It most likely depends on the usage of the differnet lines that cross the atlantic.
Anyway, it should get better real soon!

2. Stare it down!

3. Self-operating lawn mower (me!

And our honorable mention in the "how to mow your lawn" category goes to... Not having one!

This is actually a feature that will appear in the future. It's in the planning stage right now, but it's coming.
And regarding this thread in general, there's a related (although somewhat technical at the end) thread in the off-topic forum for those who are interested:

Yes, I've noticed that as well. We will get access to the server on the 25th I belive, so hopefully it can be up and running some seven to nine days or so from now. I'll PM you when testing if I need you to test it out for me from your location
*Edit a few minutes later:*
I checked it now, and it was the 22nd! I'm in Stockholm doing some other work until wednesday this week however, but when I'm back on thursday I'll be right at it! With some luck, it might be up by friday!

One more thing:
If you like to test the download speed from the new server, try this out:
http://85.17.128.2/10mb.bin
It's a 10MB file located in the same data center. The data center is in the netherlands, and I get the highest possible speed using my swedish Telia ADSL line. Same for Kris with his fiber line and also very good for a few others who have tried it out.
It would be interesting to hear if it seems to be good speed for you, and also for anyone else (including non-europeans!).

I'm in the USA on the East Coast and I got > 500KByte/sec - pretty reasonable I'd say
I Have 30Mbit cable, so that speed reflects the whole journey and is not limited at my end.

Hello Again!
My average speed was 100kbps, so not as good as Andrews
My line is a true 2 Meg line which is generally very quick. I will be more than happy to help test the new server!
Posted by: Yonrak May 20 2007, 05:55 PM
I only get around 100Kb/s on that file. I'm using 8MB connection, and I have seen other downloads go up to around 700KB/s. (I'm in the UK)
I'll be willing to test the new UK server too if you need more testers (since I finish school on Friday )
**edit** I also get fairly slow video loading speeds

While not as fast as I would have hoped, 100KB/s should still be enough to play the videos without any problems

Agreed - I was occasionally down to ~80 kbytes/sec on our previous US GMC server- and it still allowed for good video streaming.
Matt: The difference will be huge for you when we get the UK server going!

Well you could be getting slow download speeds because you could have tons of crap on your computer. For example if you have tons of folders on your desktop that arent short cuts they are real folders with items in them like 18.1 mbs I have of music and that slow my computer way down. Or if you haven't cleaned your computer of spyware, viriuses and what not that will GREATLY effect your computer. My mother broad broke because i didn't take well enough care of my computer until it was too late. So I would fix your computer of spyware viriuses go to
Start>Run>msnconfig press Enter and check all the crap you have running and you can shut some of it down on the start up.
So clean your computer
Clean up the desktop
change what you have on start up (requires basic computer knowledge)
After all of that and your computer is still going very slow then it is your connect.
If you are too lazy to deal with the desktop just get more RAM lol.

Nope, it wasn't updated at that point
I also noticed that it was alot quicker for a while, but after that it got real slow again...
...BUT NO MORE - the new server is now up and running!
I'm currently adding countries to the list of countries that should be redirected to the new server. When your country has been added you will see that you are using www2.guitarmasterclass.net instead of the usual www (this is for europeans only at this stage, we might add Asia etc later if it seems to be a faster solution for these countries as well).
Anyway, I'm adding nations now. If you don't get sent to www2 by tomorrow, give me a shout and I'll fix it

I think I'll set up a special server just for you. I've got an old Mac Plus (external 20MB hard drive, I think I can fit one whole lesson on it) and a 14.4kbps modem lying around somewhere. I'll hook that up and send you a link to my "brand new" gmc server, alright?

Good idea - we should make a special vintage guitar lesson and put it there.
It's very,
very rewarding to see that some of you who had problems have now got a fast connection...
Can we get some more feedback from people noticing a difference? (good or bad!)

Yes, with old 78 record sound quality - but, you have to promise to dress up in a 40s style DJ and haircut, and dance in an old fashioned way, with an acoustic guitar and soapbar pckup

It really is great to have a new server. It was getting to the point where it was a chore to watch a video or even play a gmc backing track
