Hey guys,

I just put a new set of D'Addario strings on my RG and it sounds horrible it's like it's not in tune while i tuned the guitar twice before putting the locking thingies back on the nut, checked it again after puting the locking thingies and the tuner says it tuned.

As far as i know Ibanez RG guitars come standard with D'Addario strings on them 09.042 thickness and that's what i put on yesterday because i was told with floyd rose bridges it's best to stay with same brand and thickness or their could be some problems.

Can anyone help me with this?

Is the surface (the plate) of your floyd rose bridge parallel to the guitar's body? Did you change the height of the bridge when restringing? If so, the position of the frets compared to the strings may have changed and you should set everything back to default, so that the guitar intonation is correct. (If bridge "sticks" out or "falls" into the body , you can tighten or loosen (respectively) the screws in the guitar body that hold the little plate where the strings are attached).

But you should also consider that new set of strings still need to adjust to the tension. You should stretch them a bit with your fingers, then retune them, then stretch them again. I see that you use super light strings so they'll need a little bit more stretching. Do some gentle vibrato as well, then tune the strings again. It can take longer but eventually the strings settle to normal.

Hope this helped! smile.gif

I just had to restring my RG yesterday as E6 string broke. I changed thickness from 9 to 10, and there were many problems with it. I most probably could tune everything to work, but the "floyd rose" was very high, and so it would detune much faster, and whammy bar would kill the tunning in no time... I don't feel competent enough to explain how to adjust the floyd rose, needed help on my own. But even without setting the floyd rose, I would tune all the strings 5-7 times before using the locking things. And of course use the whammy + bend +vibrato all the strings in the process.

EDIT: also remember to set the micro-tuners ( the little things to tune the strings after locking them near the neck ) in the middle position, to be able to fine-tune the strings after locking.

It takes time for new strings to stretch. Can take hours of playing. It's possible to give all strings a good pull to get the stretched quicker but I don't do that. I just play for a couple of hours since I managed to pull them off when I stretched the by force.

EDIT: And with that said, play without locking the trem until it plays without going out of tune at all. Then set the tuner knobs on the tremolo to the middle, tune your guitar and lock it. Aftre that you possibley have to tune yet a couple of times before you're good.

EDIT2: When I put my first set of coated Elixir string on my LP the furst thing I noticed was that they barely needed any stretcing at all compared to other brands I tried. I'm still on my first Elixir set so I can't judge wether that was their characteristics or just a freak accident they didn't need stretching.

Strings need some time to adapt so it's pretty normal to tune
it couple of times before you tighten locking.
Also stretch them a bit while doing tuning, that will help as well. smile.gif
