How Often Do You Change Strings? |

I use fast fret and I also clean the neck whenever I change my strings.
AND - here's the big tip. I wash my hands always before I play the guitar! |

The strings should be changed as soon as their resonance abilities start to diminish. This involves several factors and most important imo are:
1. The rust - when the string coating is gone, the metal starts oxidizing in contact with the air and moisture and the rust makes the string vibrate unevenly and causes lose of sustain and color. 2. Tension - The string is under a lot of tension when properly tuned, so in time the metal looses it's initial flexibility on certain places, and starts to vibrate unevenly. This causes tune problems and lose of color. 3. Fret marks - When the string is pressed to fret - tiny marks start to appear on those places after some time. This makes the strings vibration unbalanced and causes lose of sustain and color. I usually change them once a month or so, sometimes 3 weeks when I'm not lazy

I change them when they loose their sound or break (more often case) ...Its about 1-2 months for me..

I also agree with Ivan. On tour I change my strings every day, like this I can avoid breaking strings on stage ( I HATE this
 ), but at home I of course use them a bit longer There is no fixed time for me to change them, as soon as they don't feel fine anymore I put on new ones.

Marcus has a great point when it comes to giggin that strings should be new before every gig. I'll add few experiences if I may. I actually don't change them before every gig, because sometimes I don't get a spare set in time to change it, but that is very risky. If the string brakes during a gig, you need a backup guitar, and if you don't have a backup guitar, then the audience must wait restringing and that can be painful indeed
 Once I snapped 2 strings on the same gig, 2 songs from each other and every time the audience waited for me to restring - that is one very bad experience for the audience and me too. Imo it is better to put maybe lesser quality strings that don't break then great quality strings that brake. Also wanna write in relation to that that I bought Elixir recently, and two strings snapped in a period of two weeks. Awesome strings but unusable for me unfortunately. So I should get back to boomers. They are cheap and last considerable less, but hey, they never broke on me and that's what counts the most. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE
