GMC Forum _ Todd Simpson _ Fzalfa's Bootcamp

Posted by: Todd Simpson Sep 6 2015, 04:38 AM

Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

Here is the link to your own PRIVATE HOUSE OF PAIN!...Er I mean.. SHRED!

Yes !

i have sign up in the foreign legion for 10yo, it was holidays....
i like to joint christian soldier in kurdistan to fight against DAESH , but my wife won"t:

-" you are too old (42??), in bad shape (a dead knee) and you have a young son... so, NO, you stay here".... Damn (she's right)

so i joint the Todd bootcamp .....

Todd's boorcamp , Gabriel's Army ? too much ?

no i think it's complementary.

I need you to make a VIDEO of you playing the mission so that I can see you play Soldier and make a critique. Do you have a web cam? If not, you can use your cell phone. Anything you like, and upload to youtube! Make sure to play with a metronome or click on the background so I can tell if you are doing it correctly!

You are really doing well Soldier!! However I did notice that your DOUBLE PICKING seemed like it might could use a pinch of extra blood. Slow down the metronome a bit for your DOUBLE PICK take so that each note is separate and distinct. Make sure to keep your palm mute solid as you have been doing as that will help the note separation.

You are VERY close on this one Soldier. One more bit of double picking maybe a pinch slower and cleaner and your ready to BADGE UP!

Laurent

WELL FOUGHT SOLDIER!!!!! You are clearly ready for "BLACK OPS". I want you to try this same lesson, with DOUBLE PICKING. It doesn't have to be fast, it can be as slow as you need it to be, but it has to be clean and you have to pick every note twice.

This will force your hand to adapt to a new type of picking and make you a better player. FIGHT ON!!!!

I watched this several times soldier and on different speed settings and I fear you may be over complicating a very simple riff just a pinch. I appreciate your aggressive style! So you get FULL MARKS for that!!!!

But this Mission is more about SNIPER FIRE than MACHINE GUN work. Watch my lesson video if you would and play along with the metronome in the vid. It's only 3 notes per string in the lick and they are all ASCENDING/GOING UP. But I must say I see blood on the fretboard!!!!!

Here is the vid Soldier!

It's a generic backing just to give you some space to show some of the licks you've learned. Try to use some of the drills/chops you have gotten so far from bootcamp and feel free to improvise on top of it smile.gif

For this lesson, I don't really need the video part. Just the audio track of you playing over the backing.

Let's Debrief...

MEDALS OF HONOR
1.)Very well played here! Your note choices are spot on and TV is your friend!! I find myself playing along with my fave shows and creating my own live sound tracks and adding solos to the existing music. One movies it's really fun smile.gif
2.)Your technique here is just what I was looking for. You show a variety of techniques and you string them together well.
3.)Your timing is also very good here. It's great to see your progress as a player! Keep going!!!

This is the lesson 19 with some more stuff

not really easy to do, even more when you aren't have the habits to do this sort of stuff

My respects Sarge !

Posted by: Todd Simpson Mar 10 2016, 06:19 PM

NICE!!! This is a very challenging lesson and is not for the feint of heart!!! Using this type of tapping is something that greatly adds to your library of licks to choose from. Most folks just do the two finger Eddie VanHalen version. This is a bit beyond that and you nailed it!! Let's debreif!

MEDALS OF HONOR
1.)Good Muting! Without good muting, this entire thing does not work. It's got open strings in it so without good muting you get all sorts of noise. Your muting technique is quite good and has come a long way so congrats there!!
2.)Even Strikes. Very hard to get solid and even strikes with both hands. The goal is to make it sound like it's coming from one hand and you are doing a very good job of it!
3.)Timing. Your timing here is very good!!! There is a nice pace to the playing and its not rushed or dragged.

Keep this up Soldier!!! You are learning everything I can throw at you!!! In short you just...

LEVELED UP!

A fine effort Soldier but it starts to fall apart just a bit around 12 seconds in. Try to play the entire sequence with the same amount of time on each not and same amount of time between each note. Very robotically basically. You rush just a bit to get back to the last note. I want to see you playing very evenly. Back to learning to play like a robot in order to shred like a God!!

You are doing great on these soldier, give this one just a bit more time on the DESCENDING part and shoot me another vid!!!

DRILLING AND KILLING!!! This is much better. You are really spot on with this one smile.gif Nice Axe there too!! I think the lack of extra helmet/head gear seems to have helped as well! Though I did like your fashion choice smile.gif Let's debrief!!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR
1.)Picking is on point! Your picking is very clean and as a bonus you are not losing your palm mute! This is a very important skill that can take forever to get a handle on and you've got it!
2.)Muting spot on! You keep a good solid palm mute the entire time and don't let a lot of extra noise happen which is great to see! Being able to control the noises that happen and don't happen is key!
3.)Pacing is great as well!! You don't rush or lag during the entire bit.

Well played here Soldier! Not an easy bit to play and requires a lot of arm travel and you nailed it!! I look forward to your next mission!!!

Sarge

In short, you just ...

Let's Debrief...

MEDAL OF HONOR
1.)So proud to see your muting get this good Soldier!! Not lifting, solid as a rock. Bam!!!

2.)Precise as a Scalpel. Even the fast bit works great and it's really a fast fast bit. Nicely done. This is a HARD lick and you kill it.

3.)CONTROL: No extra string noise, no unwanted notes and very even and deliberate pacing. Score!!!

In short, your hard work is paying off in spades and you are more than ready for the hurdles that away you in coming missions! ATTACK!!!

My respects Sarge

Laurent

Posted by: Todd Simpson Mar 16 2016, 07:29 PM

NICE!!! This is a really tough bit to play as you can't rely on your picking hand AT ALL. It's a great warm up and a great way to work on your left hand!!! If you can play scales with your left hand only, then picking becomes a tone choice. You can add picking or not, depending on how you want it to sound. smile.gif

Let's debrief!!!!!
MEDALS OF HONOR
1.)Left hand POWER! That was a great example of using it to shred your brains out!!!

2.)Pacing and Speed! This is a very tough one to keep even and you did very well on keeping it nice and smooth!! Not rushing or dragging.

3.)Aggression! The best part was the aggressive style. Jumping right in to the lick and going for it!!

In short, you just ...
LEVELED UP!

You really are Drilling and Killing Soldier!! Keep up this pace and you will have all of them done by xmas!!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Mar 17 2016, 10:01 PM

WELL FOUGHT SOLDIER!! This lesson is all about fret travel. About being able to take a scale and run it up the neck while making it sound like you are not moving your hand. This is not easy to pull off. It takes work to make it sound smooth and you have clearly put in the work!!! The fret travel is smooth and the lick works!!

Let's debrief!!!!!
MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)TRAVELING: Nice fret travel! Not only traversing strings, but traveling up the fretboard in a very smooth and precise fashion.

2.)PICKING MADNESS: Double picking is spot on as well as the single picking! The pacing is nice and even and deliberate as it should be.

3.)MUTING MADNESS: VERY good job muting on this as it's one of those licks that is prone to cause string noise. You keep a good solid palm mute while using your thumb and finger to control the pick. It's the culmination of everything we work on in chat and it's coming together nicely!!!!

In short, you just ...
LEVELED UP!

My respects Sarge

Laurent

SAVAGE AGGRESSION!! NICE smile.gif
This is NOT an easy lesson to pull off. Using just one strike then Hammering On the rest is something that I often try to "hammer" home as an important technique and this lesson is all about it! This forces you to rely on the left hand to make notes instead of always relying on the right hand. Nice!! Let's DEBREIF!!!

Let's debrief!!!!!
MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)PICK AND HAMMER!: The "Pick and Hammer" is very important and you have a very good grasp here both ascending and descending. Some players find if very hard to do to one or the other, just depends on the player and do both with style!!

2.)Palm Mute Madness: Very good control of leaving your palm in one place and using your fingers to make notes. This is something I try to teach all the time and it takes folks quite a while to get the hang of it, and you have it!!!!!!!!

3.)Multi Picking Madness: Just to show you have a full rounded grasp of the concepts, you also do a multi pick version which is great to see. Showing that you can play it hammer on or crazy pick style. Either way you are comfortable shredding!

In short, you just ...
LEVELED UP!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Slow and Steady wins the race! : You do a great job of pick control on this one. Steady pace and even playing. Nice!!

2.)PALM MUTE MADNESS: Very clean palm mute per usual as I've come to expect. Nice!!

3.)Back and Forth like a champ!: This is a VERY VERY confusing lick, especially when played slow. You may have noticed that it seems harder to play slower than it does to play fast. Well done smile.gif

Also, add a take of DOUBLE PICKING and TRIPLE PICKING if possible and you will have EARNED YOUR 26 badge!!!!!

Well fought Soldier! You have put in some work on this one! This is also not an easy drill but you are doing it with style. Let's Debrief!

MEDALS OF HONOR
1.)TRAVERSE! Very nice job traversing strings with pick and fingers (back and forth between strings)

2.)Good job also not letting the high E ring out as it sometimes wants to. This is because of your good job Muting. Well done!

3.)The Multi picking is solid and steady, which is as it should be!! You are ready for 28!

In short, you are showing great finger control and pick control and very good right/left hand synchronization. This is exactly what I like to see. Soldier you just...

2.)Very good muting resulting in clean tone without string noise. Spiff!

3.)Single and multi pick versions are clean and steady as they should be. Awesome!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Clean muting/picking. Doing a great job managing the string noise that is very hard to escape in licks like these! Nice!

2.)Very smooth timing. It's often the case that these licks get rushed, dragged, but not by you!!

3.)More than one lick per mission! This is where things get interesting and in just a few short missions you will be doing many drills in a single mission but I think you are well prepared!

Well Fought Soldier!!!! This one took a while but it's worth it! This is where you start having to play several licks in a single Mission. From here on it only gets more challenging. The good news is, YOU ARE READY!!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Multipicking!! Right off the bat you dive in to the multi picking on each lick. Well done there!! Multi picking is something folks struggle with and most never get a handle on for one simple reason. It's friggin hard!! Your practice is paying off!

2.)Technique: Your right hand is well planted to prevent unwanted string noise, and it's doing a good deal of the muting. This is something else that stumps many players as they often rely on right hand muting which results in not being able to play certain licks without generating string noise. Most of these licks are designed to make wads of string noise if you play them wrong. But you play them just right!!

3.)Steady Hand: Your picking is very clean and even. That's one of the hardest of all. Only one spot is it a pinch off the drums but it is synched with itself so it sill works. This is part of the "Learn to play like a robot to shred like a God" bits.

In short you just....

LEVELED UP!!!!

Mission #31 awaits!!!!

I appreciate your hard work!!! Remember though, I don't care about speed, just precision smile.gif If you are playing in a precise way, it doesn't matter to me what speed it is. But I want you to be happy with it so you have to do what you feel led to do! Maybe record a "so far" type vid? I may be able to give some tips/tricks?

WELL FOUGHT SOLDIER!! You continue to push the envelope and you are still our HIGHEST RANKING SOLDIER!!!!! Let's Debrief.

I must say Soldier, this is VERY impressive. You continue to dig deep and impress me with your playing. You do a fine job of putting these licks in to context here. Which is the entire point of learning all these licks wink.gif You are ready for what is next. These lessons are going to get hard. But I think you can handle it!! Keep in mind, if there are 6 examples, you have to record all 6 examples!

Let's DEBRIEF!!!

MEDAL OF HONOR
1.)TIGHT right and left hand synchronization!
2.)PLANTED right hand for a solid mute.
3.)PPRECISION picking with AGGRESSION to spare.

More importantly, beyond the usual check boxes for things I look for, you did well "Musically" and this is the most important thing. I can teach anyone to move their hands/fingers in a synchronized way if they are willing to practice. I can't teach "Musicality". That is something that comes from the player. I have seen your own musical "Style" progress as you work more and more on creating guitar solos that are expressive and interesting. Keep it up!!

Soldier!!! You have just .....

!!!!LEVELED UP, AGAIN. YOU REMAIN TOP KICK
(Highest Ranking Soldier)!!!!

WELL FOUGHT SOLDIER!!

I must say Soldier, this is VERY impressive. You continue to dig deep and come correct with the AGGRESSIVE STYLE!!! This is not an easy bit to play, especially when picking each note. And it requires a significant pinky stretch as well!

Let's DEBRIEF!!!

MEDAL OF HONOR
1.)TIGHT right and left hand synchronization, per usual!
2.)PLANTED right hand for a solid mute, also seeing this every time which is great.
3.)PPRECISION picking, almost casually playing it!.

It looks like you put in some time on this one. It's a big stretch and some folks have real trouble with this as it's sort of a finger twisters but you looked like you had it all the way nailed!! Nice smile.gif

Soldier!!! You have just .....

2.)Very good muting per usual!! You have a very firm grasp on muting and it makes your technique sound nice and clean!

3.)Multi picking from Hell! Your multi picking has really gone INSANE! I love it smile.gif

This is good stuff soldier!! I like your multipicking! However, the original Mission is in Single notes so I really need to see your single picked version of this as well Soldier!! When I'm doing the video demo, I"m just playing it at a fast clip so it may sound like I'm doubling it. I"m not. I"m just playing it fast. Give me one more of you playing it using single notes, and it doesn't have to be as fast as the vid. That's just to show what it "can" sound like eventually. You can pick each note, or you can pick just a few and hammer on the rest. Either way is fine smile.gif Just make it sound smooth and even.

Back to the Front Soldier!

WELL FOUGHT SOLDIER!! This lick is something we did in our Online Vid Chat lessons. I'm guessing you remember it from there a bit? Either way, you GOT IT!! This is called a "Scale Inversion", I did a lesson on this topic for the GMC lesson archive. Here is a link to it. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-In-Thirds/

Anyhoo, let's DEBRIEF!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR
[/color]
1.)Very even and steady timing
2.)Great palm mute ( never lifted once)
3.)Smooth precisoin/speed.

In short you just killed it and are ready to dive in to the deep end of the pool! Things can get a bit crazy once you move past MISSION 38. You start getting in to MISSIONS with multiple parts and requirements. Also, tapping is introduced along with other techniques. You however, are ready!!!! Also, CONGRATS are in order. Let's Debrief!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)FINGER TRAVERSE: This lesson requires very delicate traverse of strings with fretting and picking. You do a very good job of it.

2.)PALM MUTE: Keeping your hand planted while playing is a skill. Most folks just can't do it. You know can!!! Congrats smile.gif

3.)PICK ONCE HAMMER MANY: Your use of pick once, hammer many is very good and tightly controlled. Well done!!

In short Solder......

NICELY DONE!!!! You continue to impress me Soldier!!! You got all the licks right and you put them in the solo! You used to worry about solo bits but now you are killing it!!! I can see that you put in a wad of practice for this one and it's not an easy MISSION. It's really many missions rolled in to one. They do get harder as we keep going and you are past the point of no return on DIFFICULTY. It's a up hill clime but you can do it Soldier!!!!!!!!

Let's Debrief!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Right/Left Hand Synch: Like you were born to it Soldier!!!!

2.)Musical Interpretation: The point of this MISSION is to use all that you've learned to interpret a solo and you NAILED IT. Adding your own bits to Mission bits. Nice.

3.)Precision and Control: You play with precision (e.g. controlled speed) and control through the entire solo. There are a few off notes here and there but nothing that would throw me off. In fact, you could simply call it "Atonal Musical Interpretation" if those were the notes you felt, then by all means, play those.

In short Soldier......

You Just......

!!!!!LEVELED UP!!!!!

You remain tied for TOP DOG!!!!! 42 is now the highest mark EVER achieved! Yet again. You and Ben continue to trade blows at the top of the board!!!

Hi Sarge

This is the mission #43..... finger twisting one !

My respects Sarge

Laurent

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 30 2016, 07:45 AM

DRILLING AND KILLING SOLDIER!!
This is not an easy lesson. It forces you to use your pinky and ring finger together in the first part, then moves to a very complex inversion of the Minor Scale. You got em both! Great use of the pinky here and it's not an easy finger to work with which is why so many folks spend soooo much effort trying to use anything but the pinky. Even when playing down low on the neck, I've seen guys try this workout using the first three fingers only. Not you soldier!

Well played here. Both ascending and descending. Controlled, precise, clean, nice!

Let's Debrief!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)CLEAN AND CONSISTENT: You are playing with a clean strike and fret technique all the way up and down the neck. The benefits of a crazy amount of practice are showing up!!!!

2.)PINKY POWER: The use of the pinky is critical. It's not as strong as it's brother fingers so it has to be worked twice as hard. I see you have been working three times as hard as the brother fingers. Well done!

3.)INVERSION THERAPY: You KRUSHED the inversion both ascending and descending. Didn't miss a note. Spiff!

In short Solder......

You Just......

!!!LEVLED UP!!!

As a bonus, you are breaking ground with each Mission at this stage. Helping to set a new high bar!

Let's Debrief!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Solid Picking/Fretting: Your right and left hands are talking to each other and speaking the same language. Nice!

2.)Spot on The Beat: You are right on top of the beat and playing with a great deal of precision here. Spiff!!

3.)Timing: It feels like a solo rather than a hand workout so well done there!! You made short work of this one Soldier!

In short,

You Just......

!!!LEVELED UP!!!

it's very confortable, the 27 frets give you a lots of space for play, even i do not have habits to play in high fret, i can without fear to be out of the neck !!

The guitar is light, quick, confortable and sound like hell, then the floyd is acurate ,even if it's not he best from ibanez, nut it done it's own job well.

Good eye Solder!! I was doing the shorthand version of the licks just to demonstrate the techniques involved. You did a great job on this one except for one thing. During the hammering/tapping section, I want you to strike the 12th fret with the right hand finger and then let the open string ring before applying the fret. This makes a four note group. 12th, open, fret position 1, fret position 2, instead of a 3 note group. Make sense? I can make the video match the drills closer if it is helpful smile.gif

WELL FOUGHT SOLDIER!!!!! Reviewing this Mission has made me realize that I need to rework the Tablature involved. The drill licks are just slightly different than the solo licks that I based them on and I'm not going to penalize you for that. You've shown persistence and patience, both qualities to be praised in a Warrior and I think you have a good handle on this Mission and are ready for what's next!! Let's Debrief!!

Let's Debrief!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)You continue to display very solid technique on all fronts Soldier. Keep it up!!

2.)Picking and Muting, and hand Synch are all looking good.

3.)Perhaps more important, your sense of timing is very tight. This takes quite a bit of practice and working through the boring bits with a metronome in the woodshed.

In short Soldier, this is a really tough bit to get through and even more confusing as the bits in the drills differ slightly from the bits in the demo solo, but you made it despite that!! Congrats and get ready for MISSION 47+ they get a bit NUTS in spots, but you can handle it!!

In short,

You Just......

!!!LEVELED UP!!!
Another Mission, ANOTHER RECORD!!!!

You are heading the right direction soldier!! However, there are FOUR bits of tablature on 47 and you are only playing 2 of them. The first bit is alternate picking (warmup) where you pick each note. Then in example A it goes to strike once hammer many.

Then next two examples are slightly different from each other so don't be tricked in to thinking they are the same smile.gif Use your EAGLE EYES to find the difference and make sure to read all the instructions as to what is to be picked version what is to be hammered etc. You have a good start on this one soldier!! Go back and read through a bit more carefully and give me one more go!!!! I hate to have you do it again, ... wait,... I don't hate it, you are on the CUSP OF GREATNESS SOLDIER!!! DO IT AGAIN!! smile.gif

That's one of the "Strike Once Hammer Many" type licks, which I think you did in the first vid? But you did a pretty good job of it smile.gif I appreciate your zeal Soldier!!! But you may be going through the notes a bit too fast on some of these. Let's break it down.

There are four licks in this Mission. (Four Tablature Graphics)

1.)Warmup
Per the notes, alternate pick this as it’s only on one string so no traverse is involved and it will be good practice. Which is to say PICK EVERY NOTE. EVERY SINGLE NOTE Soldier!

2.)Part A
Entirely different fretting pattern than the warmup. A different lick. It's a small difference but go note by note and see if you can see what I'm saying. This lick is more like what you are playing, Strike the open string then Hammer on, per the nots.

3.)Unmarked Graphic Tablature Part B
ALTERNATE PICKING, PICK EVERY NOTE, THUMBLESS

4.)Unmarked Graphic Tablature Part C
this Lick is not the same as the one in the previous graphic. It's got another subtle difference. Go note by note to find it. Just like #3, ALTERNATE PICKING, PICK EVERY NOTE, THUMBLESS

That's all four bits smile.gif Make sense Soldier? Let me know if you have questions. Onward!

Sarge

Now you're talking Soldier!! Let the enemy run in fear!!!! Well fought

Let's Debrief!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)STREEEEEETCH!! Very nice work on the killer stretch. This Mission is all about working your stretch!!!!

2.)Picking while Stretching: The stretch can throw off one's picking, but not you!! Picking is tight and on point.

3.)Muting while stretching: The stretch can also throw off the palm mute, but again not for you Soldier! Muting is solid and we hear no extra string noise.

In short,

You Just......

!!!LEVELED UP!!!

Another Mission, ANOTHER RECORD!!!!

WELL FOUGHT SOLDIER!!!! I know this mission has many challenges. Not least of which is that it's just a bit strange. The licks are not very familiar or natural in many cases. I wanted to throw something at you guys that made your fingers think twice about which bit you were playing. As a result, I use the same notes in all of them, but have you play it in slightly different ways each time.
The good news is, you KRUSHED IT SOLDIER!!!

Let's Debrief...

MEDALS OF HONOR
1.)Well played and executed. Good form on your tapping, hammering, pulling off, and your picking. You go back and forth between each quite well.

2.)Your palm mute technique continues to get better and better and you have gotten to the point where you can multi pick without lifting your right hand. This is a HUGE milestone that many players simply never reach.

3.)Your timing is also very good here. Everything is solid and not rushed and not lagging.

This is a hard Mission to conquer Soldier. You should feel proud at your having KILLED IT!!! You are only two MISSIONS away from the vaunted 5 Chevron Badge. I"ve never given one out. Ever. Not in more than 5 years. You would be the first ever @ GMC to have one. smile.gif I have no doubt that you will get it or go down fighting!!!!

In short you just....

MUCHO CONGRATS SOLDIER!!!

This crazy multi fingered tapping is tough for folks that love doing tapping/hammering. For folks that are new to 4 and 5 note tapping, all of this can be just insane. I'm impressed with how you worked through each bit. Each one gets harder and harder until you get to the last one which is nearly impossible. smile.gif

The good news is, you are now to level of playing the impossible, so..

Let's Debrief...

MEDALS OF HONOR
1.)Good tapping technique all around! No stray notes, not random string noise!

2.)Solid Timing on each one!!! It's VERY easy to RUSH and DRAG these from one section to the next just trying to get through it. But you play each one nice and even.

3.)Clean Left hand strikes. This is one of the hardest things to teach, hammer and pull with just the left hand and you got it!!

In short, you just.....

LEVELED UP!!!!!!
*Yet again broken every Record. There has NEVER been a LEVEL 49. Ever!

Welcome to a Milestone Soldier!!!!

You are about to cross a major threshold. I watched the vid many times over more than one sitting to make sure. Level 50 is not something we have ever given out before so I wanted to be sure!

Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)FINGER TRAVERSE: As I've come to expect, you have really gotten a good handle on traversing strings with both fingers and pick.

2.)PALM MUTE: You've had a good handle on your muting for a while now and it continues to improve.

3.)FINGER DEXTERITY: This Mission requires some serious finger dexterity and you have earned it Soldier!! With each step, you are becoming more and more the Axe Man you started out wanting to be!

In short Solder......

You Just......

!!!!!LEVELED UP!!!!!
*Not to mention, you've hit a HUGE Milestone, one never attained before. Also, this is the last level before you get the first chevron badge ever created beyond the one you currently have. We've never needed one and I never thought we would. Congratulations.

And here we are at MISSION 51! We are heading in to the tall grass now Soldier. It only gets tougher from here. But I think you are more than ready. You took on this mission with true agressive styile and it shows! Your playing gets better each time and I'm thrilled to see you making so much progress. Also, SUPER CONGRATS on remaining with the program and not being thrown off by the difficult bits. That alone is worth it's own Medal of Honor.

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Precise Pick Control (earned by countless hours of practice)
2.)Right and left hand TALKING as they should for killer hand synch (also countless hours of practice)
3.)Firmly planted right hand keeping any extra string noise at bay (crucial on licks like this that use every single string)

Super Congrats are in order here Soldier!! You have, yet again, broken all previous records and set a new one. A new bar for other folks to try to reach. I never had the need to make a Badge beyond 50 and I honestly doubted I'd ever need to. The training course is long and difficult. You have more than earned it Soldier. Here is the brand new QUINTUPLE CHEVRON BADGE.
You are the only recipient, ever to receive it. Again, well earned. Fight on Soldier!!!

Congrats Soldier, you just ...

More Solid Work Soldier!!!!

This scale is a modification of the "Shred Minor" scale that we use so very often in other Missions/drills/etc. This little modification makes the scale quite a bit harder to play because of the stretch and odd finger positioning that happens in each octave. The good news is that you didn't seem thrown off by this! Well fought!

Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)TRAVERSING LIKE A PRO: Across strings, across frets, you don't miss a beat. Steady and evenly played. Nice!

2.)PALM MUTING LIKE A PRO: This drill goes over every string so it's particularly tough to palm mute but you handle it great.

3.)FINGER DEXTERITY: This drill requires quite a bit and you have it!

In short Solder......

You Just......

!!!!!LEVELED UP!!!!!

2.)PLANTED PALM MUTE: Killing extra string noise is key, You really have it under control!!

3.)DISCIPLINED PLACE: Not lagging, not rushing, just shredding smile.gif

Well Fought Soldier!! Great to see you are still plugging away while many of the Bootcampers appear to be eggnogging!!! Nose to the grindstone Soldier!!!! smile.gif

You have made some seriously HUGE gains since we started working together Soldier. It's hard to believe that you have come so far so fast and it's all down to you busting your hump!!! It takes hard work, it takes discipline, it takes PRACTICE!!!!! If you put in the practice, you get out the SKILLZ!

You sir have put in the woodshedding time and have reaped the fruit that results. Great to see smile.gif Super Congrats!!

Let's debrief!.....

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Pick Strike/Fret Strike Synch: This Mission is built around picking at the exact moment of fretting. Many missions are built around this idea, this one adds a layer of complexity by forcing your fingers to work their little tails off!!! The good news is you NAILED IT!!

2.)NOISE CONTROL: Per usual, you have a really good palm mute and don't allow wads of extra noise that a lick like this would normally generate. I make this licks so that they are inherently "noise prone". But you keep it muted like a pro!!!

3.)AGGRESSIVE STYLE: You really start pushing the envelope with your multi-picking and sheer speed! There are a couple of spots at high speed that drift just a pinch but nothing that would keep you from a MEDAL!!!!

You ticked every box I wanted to see per usual so in short,
You Just......

!!!!!LEVELED UP!!!!!

Super Congrats Soldier!! You are getting ever closer the never before seen rank that follows the FIVE CHEVRON BADGE. In fact, one doesn't exist yet. I'll be making it just for you. The file is already named FZALFA and it's just for you. Congrats!!

MEDALS OF HONOR
1.)I can see the blood on the fretboard Soldier!! That first bit has a nice good long stretch in it. smile.gif You handled it just fine. Congrats on that!

2.)Your MULTI PICKING is more precise than ever. Very exact and precise, well done.

3.)Even the complex tapping lick was done in a precise and deliberate manner with just the right amount of aggression.

In short, this is a HARD lesson. It requires you to display a wide variety of skills in order to play all of the licks in involved. You didn't even break a sweat!! Well done Soldier!! You are only a few missions away from breaking yet another ALL TIME BOOTCAMP RANK RECORD. Keep it up Soldier!

Well fought Soldier!! The reason this Mission seemed tough is because this Mission IS tough. It combines a bunch of things that we have done before and strings them all together. I must say you did a fine job of putting your aggression and skill to good use!!! Let's debrief!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)TECHNIQUE FROM HELL: You have been working hard on improving your technique since day 1 and it shows. Not once do I see you out of control. You pull together your picking, hand synch, muting, and pacing to great effect.

2.)MULTI PICKING FROM HELL: Directly from Hell is your MULTI PICKING!!! I can still remember when you were fighting tooth and nail to get a handle on your Multi Picking. Its official, you have a handle on it!! Great job!!

3.)FINGER TWISTER FROM HELL: There are some inversion patterns in this Mission that are just complex and hard to play. You manage to keep a smooth pace, and never lose hand synch. Nice!!!!

In short Soldier, you have pulled together a vast array of techniques in order to put the Hammer Down on your Enemies and Defeat the Mission with Flying Colors!!!!!!

In other words, you just

LEVELED UP!!!!!
*Also you remain our TOP DOG!!

Well Fought Soldier!

This is NOT an easy one. The long finger stretch required as well as the bonkers finger twisting needed to play a complex shape forwards/backwards, inverted, doubles, etc. Nice!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*FINGER PRECISION: This is a real finger twister no matter how you slice it and many folks just give up at this point. NOT YOU. With typicaly determination you fought through to the end. Victory!
*SYNCH: Your right/left hand synch has come a long way and it's getting darn good!!!!
*TOO GOOD! I'm gonna have to make you start doing multi picks on every thing as these are just not hard enough for you anymore! You've gotten that good!

Congrats!

Hi Sarge

This is the mission #59, a pain for the left arm !!

Posted by: Todd Simpson May 12 2017, 05:42 AM

Well fought Soldier!!! This one is a huge challenge for the picking hand. It makes you really focus on whether to up or down stroke as you change strings. The picking never stops and when playing this, it almost feels like the picking is off because of the timing, but it catches up. It's a very odd lick in terms of timing. Some folks have real issues pulling this lick off. You have done a lot of multi picking which has really helped prep you for this one. Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*SYNCH: If you would have had any right/left synch issues, they would have shown up right away. Good news!! you were spot on with your synch!!
*PINKY POWER!!: Great use of the pinky!! Pinky power is critical to being able to play this lick. You have really worked to get your pinky power up and congrats!! It's there!!
*MUTE!!: You keep a very solid palm mute the entire time despite massive amounts of picking and string traverse. Well done!!

In short, you freaking KRUSHED IT!!! and

LEVELED UP!!!

Great to see you back in the fight Soldier!!!! You are clearly in good form and have been putting in some time at the shooting range, I mean, woodshed!!! These are NOT easy bits to get past for sure. Playing with only ONE HAND is something that presents a challenge for nearly every player I've ever seen try it. It requires a great deal of left hand finger power. When you have to strike with only the left hand fingers, you need enough finger power to agitate the string, and then enough left to do a good pull off or hammer on. Doing this is hard enough, but doing it without wads of string noise is even harder. You have to keep a solid mute on all the strings which makes things tougher still as it's working against the very strikes you are making with your left hand!

The good news is that you pulled it off Soldier!! Let's Debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*FINGER POWER: Your left hand finger power is on point Soldier!!! You strike with confidence and pull off with aggression which is what I like to see. Score!

*TIMING: Without the picking hand being involved for either picking or tapping/hammering, it can be hard to keep proper time. Without realizing it, we sometimes use our picking hand to keep/count time as we strike notes. If that hand is removed, timing can become an issue. Not so with you! You do a very good job of keeping it high and tight Soldier!

*NOISELESS: Keeping the unwanted string noise away can be a challenge when trying to use the left hand only to make strings vibrate. The muting from your right hand is working against the hammer/pull of the left hand. So it's tempting to let off the mute and this can result in unwanted string noise. Not the case here!! Quiet as Death!!

In short, you just...

LEVELED UP!!!

Waiting to hear back about this but wanted to give you fair warning that I may not be here anymore if it's decided that way. Thank you for your hard work and keep practicing!

WElLL FOUGHT SOLDIER!! Look at that STRETCH!!!! Now that's what I'm talking about Soldier!!! This Mission was designed to force one to make ones STREEEEEETCH in to a WEAPON OF POWER!! You've done just that. Score! The finger reach required to play this willl serve you well in other areas. When you find a new scale or lick with a big reach in it, you should be more than prepared! Add these licks to your practice routine and you can keep these gains! let's debrief...

MEDALS OF HONOR

*STREEEETCH: The stretch is the big thing in this Mission and you got a really good handle on it. Score!!

*SYNCH: If the hand synch is off, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Synch is spot on. Score 2!!

*PACE: Like a clock! nice and even. Not rushing or lagging. Score 3!!

You remain our

HIGHEST RANKING SOLDIER!!!!

and you just ....

Watch those fingers flly!! It's all there. Good technique, aggressive style, precision, and pure anger! smile.gif

MEDALS OF HONOR
*MUTING: Solid Muting here. This type of lick is prone to string noise and you keep it under control

*PRECISION: Spot on, strikes happening bang on where they should.

*AGGRESSION: I appreciate the aggressive style on this. Just digging in and going for it!

In other words, you just....

LEVELED UP!!!

SUPER CONGRATS SOLDIER!!!! You really had to dig in to this one. It's not an easy Mission. HUGE STREEEEETCH and multiple parts to get a hold of before you can even attempt a video. This is where things start to get interesting and we separate the Men from the Boys as it were. It's only uphill from here but you are more than ready. Let's Debrief!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*SYNCH: Per usual you have really tight right and left hand synch. One slip and it would show up.

*STRETCH: This requires a huge stretch and you nail it!

*PRECISION: If you play this Mission sloppy, it shows up quick. You handled it with a high degree of precision.

In other words you just...

LEVELED UP!!! AND MADE HISTORY WITH THE FIRST 6 CHEVRON BADGE EVER AWARDED @ GMC!!!!

Congratulations!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*ZERO NOISE: Any string noise sticks on on single string work as you are only wanting to hear one string. Sympathetic vibrations of the other strings can ring unless muted. Not here well done!

*TIGHT SYNCH: Spot on right and left hand synch.

*ABOVE AND BEYOND: The solo at the end shows how far you have come. Not just a collection of licks, but a cogent and soulful solo. Well done.

Well Fought Soldier! You even figured out the bit at the end of 68 that has no tablature!! I like your aggression Soldier! You attack each Mission with a verve of Kill or be Killed. Keep it up! Let's debrief!...

MEDALS OF HONOR
*PRECISION ON POINT: Speed is a byproduct of precision and your precision is spot on.

*NOISE FREE : Solid muting strategy keeps it all nice and clean.

*LOCK STEP SYNCH: Right and left hands are talking to each other as they should be.

If there is anything I'd say you might need to work on in future Missions, it's that you are NOT using your pinky in many instances when playing around the 5th and 7th fret. This is the exact range where the pinky is important. Try to use the pinky in all shapes when working in the lower frets in stead of using just the first three fingers. if you are up beyond the 12th fret, the first three fingers sometimes work better as frets are cramped, but on the lower frets, USE THAT PINKY!!!! I'm not going to dock you for not using the pinky here as you've obviously put in the work to play these Missions. But from now on, USE THAT PINKY unless you are playing above the 12th fret!

Other than that one thing, these were very well done and I appreciate the hard work as these missions get a bit nuts having four entire bits to learn for each one. Well done! You just..

LEVELED UP!!! AND ARE ONCE AGAIN TOP DAWG!!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*Aggressive Style: Attacking the lesson with all guns drawn and all techniques brought to bear.

*Precision on Display: Speed being a byproduct of precision, you got serious precision.

*Even did the Hammering Bit!!: That last bit is meant to be a stumbling block, but you got it!!

My respects Sarge

Posted by: Todd Simpson Feb 11 2018, 02:35 AM

Well fought Soldier!!! This one is all about STAMINA. These are designed to help you find your limit in terms of stamina. The more you can repeat these licks in a row, the better off you are in terms of your ability to play at your max for extended periods of time. Ideally, you should be able to play these drills all the way up and back down the neck at least once without pain. Let's debrief!

MEDAL OF HONOR

*SYNCH: Hand synch is tight for each and every one. Nice!

*MUTE: No Extra String Noise. Double Nice!!

*STAMINA: Not a hint of fatigue anywhere in sight! Triple Nice!!

In short Soldier you killed it and ...

LEVELED UP!!!!! ALSO YOU REMAIN TOP DAWG!!!!!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Feb 19 2018, 09:53 PM

Well Fought Soldier!! This is a very tough lesson. All the bits fit together in the end and it can be very confusing to play this as each bit is similar but slightly different. I am still having trouble hearing your pick strikes? is this one of the patches I sent you?
did you get those patches and were you able to load them in to the 11? I made them just so that folks could hear pick attack clearly. The 11 is great but without trimming some of the bass tone out before the amp/gain stage, it can be a little like an ORANGE amp, fuzzy/dark/muddy. But with a parametric eq and clean boost in the chain it can be great. Let me know about the patches and whether you were able to load them. Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*DIFFICULTY: This is one of the toughest lessons in the entire series. I know you had to work hard to put all those bits together. Well freaking done!!!

*TECHNIQUE: All that you've learned is on display, memorizing obtuse patterns, alternate picking, tempo, muting/etc. All of them working together to allow this lick to be played. Nice!!

*AGREESIVE STYLE: Above all that you attack the Mission and then Multi Pick it!!! Super Nice.

In short, you made MINCE MEAT out of a brutal bit of Guitar Work. You are closer than ever to cracking the double digit barrier. If anyone can do it, you can!!!!! Congrats you just ..

LEVELED UP!!! AND YOU REMAIN TOP DAWG!!!

My respects Sarge

Laurent

Posted by: Todd Simpson Feb 21 2018, 02:47 AM

Well fought Soldier!! This was a tough one indeed. It requires big stretch/reach and had wads of tapping that involved pulling off to an open string which is something folks struggle with as it's not a type of tapping that is common like the Van Halen style. You knocked it out of the park! I like your tone as well!! I do hear the delay, you can just turn the delay OFF and resave the patch, problem solved! Or turn off the delay and save it as a new patch and rename it. Either way will work. Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*TAPPING LIKE A MAD MAD: This has some very difficult two hand tapping bits that travel all the way up the strings. You attacked and crushed them all!
*MUTING: I wanted you to go all the way through all the strings to find out if there are any gaps in your mute. Good news! No gaps.
*STRETCH/REACH: I put these notes far apart on purpose to force your hand to stretch. You did each and every one of them. Score!

You really nailed it on each and every one of these! Very well done. In other words you crushed it and ...

LEVELED UP!!! YOU ALSO REMAIN OUR TOP DAWG!!!

Soldier, the way you are editing your videos cuts out the very start and sometimes the ending of each section so that I can't hear what's being played.sad.gif I can see your fingers though and it looks good, but please do try to put more space in between each cross fade so that it does not cut off the start and sometimes the end of your playing, you've worked hard and I'd like to be able to hear the fruits of your labor!!!!!! smile.gif

Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*MEMORY MAN: This lesson picks up where the last one left off and asks you to memorize very long note sequences. These are VERY tough Missions indeed and you are KILLING IT. Well done on learning these licks, they are NOT easy to memorize or play. Score!

*PRECISION: Pacing is solid and picking/hand synch are spot on as well. Even the pinky slide is there! Double Score!!!!

*AGGRESION: I really appreciate the way you attack the mission soldier. I can hear the aggression in your playing. TRIPLE SCORE!!

In short you have crushed one of the most difficult missions of the entire series. This is where things get seriously challenging and you are stepping up and fighting at the FRONT LINE!!!! In other words you just

Well Fought Soldier! You are in the tall grass now. These are some of the toughest Missions in the entire series and they are all back to back. Each one has multiple parts and each part could honestly be it's own Mission. This is the tough bit before you break every record and make it in to triple digits which has simply never been done before. Let's debrief!

MEDALS OF HONOR!!

*Timing: Solid pace on each one. Your sense of timing has come a long way since Mission 1!

*Muting: Solid muting on each one and they are designed to be bursting with string noise if you don't keep a good mute.

*Picking: Very solid alternate picking which gets tough with this much string traverse.

This is a bear of a Mission. All of these in this area are tough. You are plowing through them Soldier! keep it up!

In short you just ...

TURBO IS RUNNING!!! NICE!! This mission is yet another one that is just flat out hard. It's got several bits that you must play in order to make it to the end. None of them are easy. All of them require a stretch and memorizing very odd note sequences that you would otherwise not normally ever play. That's the point of this one, to get your hand to adapt to simply bizarre things that your fingers are not used to. The good news is that you had ZERO problem with this at all! Also, better video editing so I can see/hear the start and completion of a vid. Let's debrief!..

MEDALS OF HONOR

*STREEEEETCH: Is in full effect. Sticking the landing with the pinky as well. Nice!

*MUTE OF THE GODS: Solid palm muting all the way through. You have developed a very solid mute where your hand stays planted on the bridge and you tilt to reach notes. That's how it should be.

*SYNCH TO BEAT THE BAND: Very tight right/left hand synch on each one. You have zero trouble there.

These are the rough ones Soldier. You are ripping it up! Keep your momentum Soldier!!! I like the tone as well. Is this a new patch? One thing I would suggest, I know it's not your normal thing, but try to do one lesson in classical position to see how it feels, it may feel strange smile.gif

In other words you just..

LEVELED UP!!!!! AND YOU STILL ARE THE TOP DAAAAWGG!!!!

The Streak Continues!! This is yet another mission with multiple parts and requires multi picking! These are not easy bits and you have to play each and every one in order to level up. You have been doing a great job burning through these! P.S. I like your patch tone but the delay may be hiding things. I think it sounds familiar, is it one of mine? Maybe kill the delay just for Missions,
it sounds great but makes it a bit harder for me to hear whats happening. Let's debrief!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*MULTI PICKING: You can multi pick just about anything Soldier!

*MUTING : String noise is quiet as DEATH.

*AGGRESSION: The sheer angry picking is impressive.

Keep it up Soldier! You are rubbing up against the double digit threshold.

In other words you just..

This is yet another one of the BIG lessons where you have to show adept skill on a variety of techniques over a series of different pieces. Well fought! Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR (You remain the TOP DAWG!!!)

*MULTI PICKING - Mega Multi Picking on display. You've really come a loooong way on multi picking and it's one of your best techniques now IMHO. Nice!

*MUTING: Quiet as Death Per usual. You've developed a very strong muting technique and it's serving you well.

*AGGRESSION: You have been en fuego on the AGGGRO!!! Keep it up!!!

My apoligies Soldier. I'll fix lesson 77. The tab should match the gp5 files. I'll make it right! As for your work on this it's top notch! Multi picking like a Mad Man, technique is spot on.

You are killing some of the hardest missions that we have to offer. Keep killing it!!

In other words you just...

LEVELED UP!!!!

Congrats on getting your STYLUS PICK and going crazy on your picking!! It's like a machine gun!! Let's debrief.

MEDALS OF HIONOR

MACHINE GUN PICKING -The stylus pick seems to have turned your picking hand in to a MACHINE GUN!!!!

STEADY PACE - You have a very solid pace going. Not rushing or lagging. Nice!!

GOOD MUTE- At this speed, palm muting is critical. You keep it muted like a pro!!
I went back and watched this again and was impressed. You really dug in Soldier!! You just...
LEVELED UP!!!!

I've modified the lessons to be more focused starting at MISSION 89 (which is where the top ranking Soldier is) and all the way through 100. Only 3 of you have ever gotten this far so we are in new territory. Here is a preview of what is waiting.
