GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Chester Bennington Tribute Collab

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jul 24 2017, 03:01 PM

Hello friends, I had the idea to make this song with you as a tribute to Link Park's singer Chester Bennington (RIP).

What do you think? Would you join?

This is the backing track:  Linkin_Park_Backing.mp3 ( 3.74MB ) : 314

All the additional info about the track can be found https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Linkin-Park-Style/.

We need off course singer/s and lyrics. I was thinking that the topic could be related to this interview:

If you are new to collabs please check out this: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=58277

WHO WOULD LIKE TO BE PART OF THIS ONE?

I have been devoid of any good sounding ideas for the last two collabs but I'll definitely get something submitted for this.
Nice one Gab smile.gif

WHO WOULD LIKE TO BE PART OF THIS ONE?

Posted by: Sensible Jones Jul 31 2017, 04:11 PM

After a brief chat with Gab at the end of last week he asked if I could base the Lyrics for this Collab on the Interview Video he posted.
So, here is what I have. I'll post a Vocal take on Thursday so you all can hear how it fits with the Backing.
He also asked me to mention that, as LP aren't such a Guitar Lead type of band, it would be good for people to do Rhythm Takes as well.
And lastly, Gab is away on vacation this week so won't be on the Boards as much as normal! Right, enough of my waffling on, here's the Lyrics:-

The Struggle Inside.

So, here am I,
Trapped inside my mind.
All around seems fine until I step outside.

My brave facade is crumbling down,
Now my inner self has lost his shiny Crown,
Trying to hide behind a fading smile,
With these Demons that I've had for a while.

This is where it starts
To fall apart

And as my mind begins to scream,
It feels like nothing is as it seems,
Everything that I took for real,
All these mad emotions that I feel,
Reality starts to drift away,
Finding it hard to face another day,
With a heavy heart and a weeping eye,
This will be my final 'Goodbye'.

Any feedback from you guys is more than welcome!!

Absolutely Cael!!
I'll get a rough take done tomorrow so you can hear the phrasing etc!

Sorry for the delay Ben, will have take posted tomorrow for you. Work and Life have been a bit busier than anticipated so far this week!!

So, here's a rough sketch of how I hear it.
I will certainly do a lot more work on it and possibly try to get the 'Brave Facade' section up an octave but I've got a bit of a Cold and Sore Throat at the moment so couldn't quite get that high!!

I've wrecked my voice at a festival with too many concerts anyway, so it will be some days before my voice is back to normal anyway smile.gif

Gabriel, what would be the estimated deadline of the collab? I'm going to Spain for a week - next week, but it is high time for me to finally take a part in a collab again! wink.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 9 2017, 03:28 PM

Hey guys!! I'm happy to see that you have made this one grow during the days that I've been out!

I could read the lyrics before leaving and I already said SJ that he is a genius! His writing gets better and better as well as his singing.

I like the vocals too. I think that maybe with some days of singing practice, you'll be able to give this even more feeling. What do you think?

Please remember that we need soloists! Are we going to have some lead guitars? You can provide melodies or guitar arrangements.

And finally, I don't want to be the only one playing rhythm guitar! Please Phil66, SJ, Cael, Marek, Todd and everybody participating film yourself also playing rhythm guitar for the videoclip!

Another idea for Cael: What about LP screams and some short hip hop rap?

Thanks

I will definitely be doing a much better take for the vocals, did a big Blues Gig last weekend and my voice has been suffering for a few days but it's feeling a lot better so will be on the case in the next few days. Will also be doing Rhythm parts too. Maybe Bass and Lead.
I think Cael is waiting for my finished Vocals before he adds some Screams etc. I have another verse half finished which could be turned into a Rap part if no-one else has any ideas?

Salute everyone! I tried to record a take, but couldn't really deliver it as I wanted, not enough practice and sore fingers:(. I am flying to Spain tomorrow and will be back 24 August, that is why I tried to record it today instead of practising it more and uploading something I am more content with later.

Gabriel if you think this is worth something, I can either send the media files that I have now, or try to record it again / record it in split parts when I am back. Tell me what you think:)

Posted by: Phil66 Aug 16 2017, 03:49 PM

I'm going to try and make a start on learning the rhythm part. Maybe just bars 5-12 due to time restraints. Once I've got it down, I'll record/video it with at least 2 different guitars so you have 2 audios and 2 videos. What do you think about one of them being done on 7 string?

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Aug 16 2017, 03:51 PM

I'm struggling a bit for lyrics, but I'm trying to come up with something smile.gif

Is that for a Rap part Cael?

I had a 2nd verse that I've changed around a bit to make it a little more Rap-like. What do you think?

I'm isolated,
It can never change,
My Normality,
Others think it strange,
There's a piece of me,
That's lost inside,
The Darkest Place,
Where I cannot hide.

Just 4 High Walls,
Like being in a Cage,
I can see the Book,
But can't read the Page,
In a Monsters Lair,
I can't break free,
Then I realise,
That the Monster is me.

Trapped in my head
I need to escape
I need to get out
Of this mental rape
Like a caged beast
My soul is destroyed
Happiness no more
Or am I paranoid
If I can't get out
I need to go to
Somewhere else
From this freak show
That's in my head
Wearing me down
Stuck in my fears
Making me drown
In my tortured mind
I die in my head
I feel no more
I NEED to be dead............................................................................

Hi Phil, try the 7 string version as well! It can definitely add more power to some parts. But to stay safe, please also provide a 6 strings version.

I can record as many takes as you want, would you like different guitars through the same patch, one guitar through different patches, or just a random mix? I can do up to 13 different guitars. Let me know buddy.

OK, let me know if you want anything any different. I played the same chords for the second rhythm part.

Two reasons:

1/ I'm not used to the other way of playing power chords and time is very tight.

2/ I thought it might sound good keeping it the same for the first rhythm section and then having the second rhythm section slightly different.

You can get all of the files here https://1drv.ms/f/s!Ap09zsLCowi5iLdGj5XoYM8OQm7nAA The ones named PRS 24 are for the Purple guitar and the ones named PRS 7 are for the 7 string.

This took all of my time tonight believe it or not. It tales me awhile to get the videos done with the few takes and syncing the sound.

Hope they're ok, if not just say and I'll redo.

Cheers

Hello Gab,

I made a mistake, I'm so sorry, I didn't set my to receive the dry signal from my guitar. I'm so used to using inputs 1 and 2 that I just didn't switch the dry feed on which was going directly into input 3. The tracks labelled "DRY" aren't dry, they are the same as the effected track sad.gif I only realised this evening when I did this intro. If you want me to record them all again I will but it will have to be on Thursday.

I've done this tonight. Just an idea on the intro, I think I've used 5ths but lower down, not sure though. If you can use it, great, if not just bin it. I can't think of any solo ideas for this at the moment I'm afraid, maybe something will pop into my head soon.

Files are in the same as before (above)

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 23 2017, 02:31 PM

Hi Phil, don't worry about the dry signal. Your tone is great.

Thanks for this new idea! Everything is welcome to enrich the track.

Posted by: Phil66 Aug 23 2017, 09:10 PM

Thanks for the kind words Gab smile.gif

How about something like this for the ending. I think it might work, it's quite poignant and has a total sense of loss to it, imho.

That's perfect! Could you please share that fragment in audio and vid to let me add it to the mix and videoclip easier?

Posted by: Phil66 Aug 24 2017, 04:40 PM

Hello Gab,

I'll try, I can definitely give you the audio but I'll have to work on the video. I just downloaded/converted the interview video to mp3 using Download Helper and put it into my DAW and then cut the parts out. I'll have a go at the video as soon as I can.

In my mind, I was thinking of having a black and white still picture of Chester with that audio over it.

Cheers buddy.

I just downloaded/converted the interview video to mp3 using Download Helper and put it into my DAW and then cut the parts out.

I've created a video for you using the same parts BUT, it won't match the original sound clip I made above as the cut/split points won't be exactly the same.

What I've done is put the whole video AND the individual sections I used into https://1drv.ms/f/s!Ap09zsLCowi5iLdGcCDdg_rGv707Pg folder in a folder called "END". There is also a "Sounds" folder that has the original MP3 that I did, along with the voice on its own and the backing on its own. The backing is a part of that "Sorrow" track I did recently in our thread.

In my mind, I was thinking of having a black and white still picture of Chester with that original take playing over it, so, if you decide to go that way, I have added a picture to the folder too, it's quite good as there is space to put a message if you want to.

The reason I think the still image would work is that the video jumps between the clips and it doesn't look right to me. The still image has more of a poignant feel to it with the original soundfile playing over it but, it's up to you buddy, you are the creative genius smile.gif

Cheers buddy.

Gab, my 'guitar only' file is over the full length of the backing, so it's about 0.49 until it kicks in.

I love it man! This is very musical, and adds a lot. You have a great sense of song arrangement. Well done.

Hey Phil! Thanks a lot for your help. I think that the black & white still image can really work. I'll check the videos but I'll also try the still pic since in can me more "artistic". I like the idea.

Hey Gab, I really wish I could add something, but I've got nothing, not feeling very inspired for it, as I'm currently working as part of my education till 5 and getting home at 6, then dinner etc and then it's 7-7.30. I know it's common for some folks, but I'm not used to it, and it's very draining. I hope you will all have a great collab smile.gif

Hey mate! Thanks a lot for this! I've missed the post at first! Looking forward your vocals! It seems that you'll be the only lead singer for this one.

I certainly did Phil. I think they scan well as a Rap part to my ear!
smile.gif

Posted by: Phil66 Aug 31 2017, 10:12 PM

That would work. In my head I was thinking of the chorus in "In The End".

I wonder if the rap could overlay the same lyrics being sung in that chorus style? Maybe Gab could put the rap in the mix so it starts later than the singing but finishes with the word "dead" at the same time?

I couldn't do it though I'm afraid. I have asked Kris if he'll do some loud vocals for us though wink.gif

I am new to GMC. Wanted to take part in these going forward. How soon does this one end? and will when the next one start?

Trying to follow this. For the guitar part do we just submit a video of us playing the lesson Gab did on Linkin Park? -https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Linkin-Park-Style/

or do we come up with our own variation(s)?

Posted by: Phil66 Sep 1 2017, 07:26 AM

Hello Creesenator,

Great to see you in here, you are very welcome smile.gif

For the Guitar part you can do anything, I recorded the same intro and then an intro in a different part of the neck. You can submit a solo, even one single note if it feels good to you. If you want to do vocals you can, keyboards, anything.

Maybe check out some of the other collabs https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=41549

Enjoy it buddy

Hi mate! It would be awesome to have you on this one!! You can do whatever you want! You can play the guitar rhythms shared in the lesson, or record your own solos and arrangements. I'll start mixing this one on Monday so feel free to share your files during the weekend or even on Monday!

What do you think? Is it possible?

There is usually one running at all times. The only downtime is when Gab is doing the video and sound mix. Once the video is released, another one is usually up and running in a day or two smile.gif

I will upload the individual parts with no Backing Track tomorrow Gab. My Internet is very slow tonight! mad.gif
Will also upload relevant Videos too. I have a day off so plenty of time to do so!!

Just realised that the last part has past 'clipping' point, do you want me to re-record that part?

Hi SJ! That's very promising! The clipping is very extreme and it becomes a problem in the chorus. Is it possible to re-record those parts?

Forgot the Lyrics for you Gab!!!

The Struggle Inside.

So, here am I,
Trapped inside my mind.
All around seems fine
until I step outside.

My brave facade is crumbling down,
Now my inner self has lost his shiny Crown,
Trying to hide behind a fading smile,
With these Demons I've had for a while.

This is where it starts
To fall apart

And as my mind starts to scream,
It feels like nothing is as it seems,
Everything that I took for real,
All the mad emotions that I feel,
Reality starts to drift away,
Find it hard to face another day,
With a heavy heart and a weeping eye,
This will be my final 'Goodbye'.

Then SJ Rap:-
I'm isolated,
It can never change,
My Normality,
Others think it strange,
There's a piece of me,
That's lost inside,
The Darkest Place,
Where I cannot hide.

Just 4 High Walls,
Like being in a Cage,
I can see the Book,
But can't read the Page,
In a Monsters Lair,
I can't break free,
Then I realise,
That the Monster is me.

And finally Phil Rap:-
Trapped in my head
I need to escape
I need to get out
Of this mental rape
Like a caged beast
My soul is destroyed
Happiness no more
Or am I paranoid

What's in my head
Wearing me down
Stuck in my fears
Making me drown
In my tortured mind
I die in my head
I feel no more
I NEED to be dead............................................................................
..

Hey guys! I would like to know your thoughts about this structure! I still have to do some levels and EQ adjustments with fresh ears.

I've been working hard to make this one be the cooler possible for listeners, so that's why I've only used the strong parts regarding solos and vocals, trying to get a powerful hit. However, I want your opinion as you are also the writers here.

You should start adding some vocals for collabs! You could start with backing vocals as an experiment and I can give you feedback to give shape to your voice. smile.gif

Gab, you have worked your mojo again, I was wondering how this one was going to turn out. Mr Jones did the most work, outside of putting the video together of course.

When I heard Marek's solo yesterday just via the MP3 link, I thought it was one of those arpeggiator effects, nice one Marek smile.gif

Bleez's solo is classic Bleez, you're definitely the LP man duder wink.gif

I wish I could have added more parts other than the intro parts, shame the 7 string didn't make it cool.gif but at least my vox edit of Chester and the picture i found got used.

Nice one Gab, I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone when I say that you go above and beyond when you create these videos THANK YOU smile.gif
