Here is my take smile.gif

feel free to mess with the EQ or anything, to make my take stand out against the backing a little more, i dont know but my take sounds a bit too quite, but use your judgement smile.gif

Great Sami , thank for your take !
Feel free to record more, you really do seem to enjoy the backing I am glad to hear that wink.gif

Feel free to submit more takes !

Also, there are some spots where you played non chord tones which is not cool wink.gif

Do you want me to include effects or you prefer dry signal to mix it ?

Yeah, sure, as required biggrin.gif 100% chord tones.

I can tab my take out if needed (although I doubt you need a tab smile.gif )

I think I got some of the chords wrong, because looking at my transcription, it looks like there are G7sus4(no5), G5, Dm7add11(no5) chords in there as well. Dunno if this is OK. Please correct me! mellow.gif

Dunno, maybe bars 5, 8, 9 & 13 on Rhodes piano.

It sounds OK to me as well, that's why I wrote it that way. smile.gif I'm just not sure if the progression is supposed to be Cmaj7, Am7, Dm7, G7 all the time, or have you added some extra notes here and there. By ear, I'd say you did.

Anyway, my lead has only those notes you said we should use. biggrin.gif

I see, you were referring to Rhodes part smile.gif
I am just concerned about Lead guitar part being strictly with arpeggios and chord tones.
Very nice effort with backing track in Guitar pro. I will include guitar pro with everything but drums when lesson gets published, so you can double check it wink.gif

Ok, this is not an outstanding solo laugh.gif, but it's an improvised take i did today. I wanted to focus on improvisation in this class collab and to be limited on only chord notes in each bar turned out to be quite difficult actually. It's easy to jam over this backing, but each time i added "not allowed" notes.

 Pedja_Class_2_Arpeggios_nbt.mp3 ( 825.29K ) : 139

I will try to do another take if there is still some time left.

Cool take Andy, this works wink.gif However you know what I will say right ? smile.gif Do more takes if you want to, always good thing as you can learn from each take you do about your style and correct things you don't like.

I should practice this approach much more. This collab helps a lot to finally sit down and just do it. It's really rewarding to be more aware of what i play ..

If i come up with another take i will for sure upload it. Thanks Pedja smile.gif

I couldn't agree more with you Andy. Very rewarding and at the same thing ear developing I hope for most members. If you do it long enough ear will pick up root in melody, 3rd, 5th etc , which is whole other topic smile.gif

I am in GMC chat right now, sorry for not responding right away smile.gif

Hi Sergio,

For this in class type collaboration I am just asking for arpeggios/chord tones that follow the actual chord progression. I heard various tensions on G7 and a lot of superimposing on other chords, therefore I can't accept this take for final mix.
Having said all this, musically speaking there is nothing wrong with this take, it just doesn't match the standards of what this collaboration is all about.
If you get the chance record a simpler take just by following arpeggios/chord tones of actual chord progression.

Thanks Sergio !

P.S. I know you can play more than that but right now its about playing less not more wink.gif

Ok Pedja, I´m sorry. I understood the idea of chord tones and arpeggios, but i did´n t know that substitutions weren´t allowed (in this particular collab). I´ll try another take.

Melodic take Harry but it has non chord tones. Again I am just looking for arpeggios and chord tones.

C maj7 = C E G B
A min7 = A C E G
D min7 = D F A C
G7 = G B D F
E min7 = E G B D

Here's my take Pedja.
Gotta say that this was a great exercise. I'm not terribly satisfied with my take though. I either recorded it too hot, or with too much gain. ...probably both for this style. Still, for the purposes of this lesson, I think I did ok to stay with the chord tones. Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks again for the focused topic. This is something I can keep working on and use forever in my solos. Please auto-sign me up for the next one! smile.gif

Jim this was very well done take. It sounded very musical and you followed all the instructions.
If I had to be picky and pick a weak spot, it was the very ending when you were coming down over D min7 chord. At one point you played non chord note which is not good smile.gif So if you get a chance to record it again but correct that one mistake, it would be absolutely perfect !
I am glad you enjoyed this focused topic. I totally agree with you, this is something you can put in your practice routine and work for a long time. The point is eventually to stop thinking of shapes and make music with it - which you did to most extent in your solo !
I will auto-sign you for next one no worries biggrin.gif

Ok Pedja, here I come

This is my first rough approach, I kept it slow and laid back - but maybe a bit too laid back especially when listening to the other takes with overdrive, arpeggios and such. Maybe - to keep up with the majority of the takes - i will post another go at it.

I hope I understood the "voice leading" idea correctly because I tried to apply it a few times when switching chords.

It's a great backing, thanks for the opportunity cool.gif

Berko this was spot on !
You did everything I asked for regarding soloing approach.

On the side note, your phrasing is weak in some sections (sounds like you are ahead or behind changes) so thats something I would correct in next take.

Overall I won't grade you on phrasing but it would be nice to have everything in sync.
Very good work with arpeggios and chord tones, you also applied voice leading which was cool !

Thank you Berko smile.gif

Yup, you're right about the phrasing, I still need to accommodate myself to such "slow" playing. At least I got used to my clean tone with lot's of dynamics and thus I could make the sound even. I know I could compress it but in my case it would ruin the tone.

I'm already mixing my tone for another take cool.gif

Shoot, I did exactly the same thing on your first collab didn't I? Only this time it was the last two chords. Not sure why I ended up with a D7 chord instead of a Minor 7th, and then I followed with Dmin7 when it should have been G7. mad.gif Ok, the fixed take is below. I spent so much time working to get the sweeps down (brand new to me), that I wasn't paying enough attention to what chords I was playing. Sorry about that.

I just listened to it Jim...

The last two bars are D min7 and G7.

On your take I heard over D min7 two things : D min7 and G7 arpeggio.
It sounds like you are anticipating changes. This is great thing, but we are not looking for that right now smile.gif

Listen to section from 0:29 - 0:31. Thats all supposed to be D min7 but you have G7 chord tones in there as well.
Let me know if you have any questions wink.gif

I'm dying to hear what everyone is doing, but I don't dare listen until I have my own take recorded. I'm afraid I'll get confused! I listened to Pedja and Emir, and then started my own. My problem is I can't play fast enough to keep up with my concept! I'm glad we have until the 28th.

Hi Pedja,

After your PM, I decided to record another take to get rid of the arpeggio-chord-carrying-over effect (you know what I mean tongue.gif ). Also made a new sound for it.

Please let me know what you think?

Cheers
Roger

No worries. I can keep 2nd take if you can't do another one. That was just something that occurred in my ears that all smile.gif

Roger thank you for doing 2nd take. This one is much better in terms of placing phrases on right spots and not carrying over bar line melodies. Sounds good, I can keep this one !

In most simple way possible it means that you still play Cmaj7 over A min7 , or A min7 over D min7 etc.
In Roger's first take you can hear that he starts phrases after beat 1, and he ends the arpeggio after the start of next chord !
So he was carrying over arpeggios smile.gif

Nice take !
Sounds about 90% of what I am looking for smile.gif
10 % was you playing tensions (like D note on A minor , thats tension 11 not a chord tone !) and you had some runs at the very end which were out as well.

Keep just chord tones Tolek and this will be very good !

I checked it out !

It sounds like in some parts you follow the rules , in some you didn't.
Idea was to play over C maj7 = C maj7 arpeggio notes only; A min7 = A min7 arpeggio notes only etc. Besides arpeggio notes (playing in order) you could play chord tones, which is playing in non specific order.

What you and couple of guys did so far was you took all the arpeggio shapes I posted and you played certain non chord tones over certain chords. In your take I hear that all the time. In Tolek's take that was on couple of spots. Both are ok in terms of melodic approach , but they don't strictly follow the rule of the class which is solo only with chord tones/arpeggio over actual chords in the background.

Let me know if you need some help with this . I can tab out something tonight if that helps with simple chord tone solo etc

Ok guys !

I just tabbed out extra solo for you.

Its very simple approach how to use both chord tones and arpeggios. You will also find in the same guitar pro file muted guitar track. Thats my actual first solo which is going to be published as lesson really soon I hope smile.gif

Let me know if you have any questions. Analyze the notes I play , you will see that they are all in actual chords stated above staff lines !

Ok, here's my second take but I won't provide the track without the backing because I would like to stick to the first one - for various reasons:
1) the vibratos are to wide (Malmsteen collab influence rolleyes.gif )
2) the tone was still a bit too dry
3) I've just realized after listening to it again that in this one i didn't stick to the chord tones at some places (this is very audible at the very beginning, note C does not correspond to a G7 arpeggio etc)

anyway, i had fun with it!

You are right Berko, I would definitely stick with your 1st take as well. I don't find it wrong playing with distortion here, that could work, I am more concerned about chord tones/arpeggios happening before or after they need to happen. You had a lot of anticipating in your solo (starting arpeggio before the actual chord changes or staying with it after it changes etc), so that produced non chord tones naturally.

I am glad you had fun with it ! 3 more days, record 50 more takes if you want smile.gif

I listened to it twice just to double check if my ear is wrong or not smile.gif

Overall it was awesome work 98 % perfect !

Two things that you can correct if you feel like recording it again (important things otherwise I wouldn't mention them).

When you went from E min7 to A min7 chord, your E min7 arpeggio went a bit into A min7 chord. So you played B and then D note there which are both non chord tones. In next take you can try to eliminate those two notes or just put them in E min7 bar and when A min7 chord comes, play Amin7 chord tones like you did before which was awesome smile.gif

Second thing was right after you had E min7, Amin7 , there was D min7 chord and then G7 chord.
What you did there was over D min7 chord and G7 chord you played G7 chord tones trough out.
The G note at the beginning over D min7 chord gave it away - its non chord tone. There you could have played D F A or C note since those are chord tones of D min7.

Thats it, those are two spots that had those mistakes. I think this take is far better then first one. As I said its 98% perfect because everywhere else you played chord tones or arpeggio. Quite an improvement for couple of days space - if that !

So now its up to you - 2 more days until deadline. I really suggest recording this take again , or even better go into this project where you have this track saved, erase 4 bars from( Emin7, A min7, Dmin7, G7) and record just that section again ! Glue it together, export the track with and without backing and you are all set.

That should take you far less time then going from beginning but as I said its up to you.

It was pleasure to help, I am happy when I can help around so never hesitate to ask !

Thanks smile.gif

Learn the names of the notes on the neck.....Learn the basic shapes of the triads/arpeggios from the root position....figure them out for yourself. smile.gif This would be most beneficial for you. Pedja gave us a link to a site that will help you with the names of the notes on the neck. Here it is:

http://musictheory.net/trainers/html/id81_en.html

I do this everyday until I get 50 of them correct. After a few weeks it is very easy to know the names of the notes on the neck.....give it a shot John!! smile.gif

After a few weeks it is very easy to know the names of the notes on the neck.....give it a shot John!! smile.gif

Im on it... this is something i can do when im talking / listening to my girlfriend on the phone.

took out the G on this one... this is a fun collab, i had alot more fun doing this one than i thought i would..

Glad you are having fun with it smile.gif

In this one 1st mistake is there (Emin7 to Amin7) but 2nd mistake you somewhat corrected (you played just before beat 1 B note ). Your run went like A D F D F B (F). You can put C instead of B note for example and after that when G7 starts play B F . It will produce same kind of resolution.
E min7 to A min7 sounds like your second take - there are notes on E min7 arpeggio extending into A min7...

So far your previous take is the best one wink.gif

QUOTE (Outlaw2112 @ Mar 26 2009, 05:01 AM) *
I would love to have a chart with all the arpeggio/chord tones on it, like you have here except for all of them...

Do you know where i could find them?

Monte already advised you to check out MusicTheory web site.
The graphs I posted for this collaboration were created using Scale Tool software. It is very easy to use it and is free of course smile.gif

Go to this website and download http://www.scaletool.com/

Let me know if you need help with it !

Yes smile.gif You did everything I asked for regarding chord tones and arpeggios. I am happy that you didn't play into other chords (like playing A min7 arpeggio into D min7 and things like that), but also you were using a lot of repetition which kept solo together trough out.
Well done Canis smile.gif

Hey Tj !

This is very melodic take, I like your phrasing here. The thing about it is you didn't follow rules to use just chord tones and arpeggios.
I can accept it , but in final comments I will have to fail you you know laugh.gif
If you have time, go to first page, you will see graphs I posted as well as guitar pro file with 4 different solos in it. That should help you do a take on just chord tones and arpeggios over it.
In the meanwhile , for what its worth, this was nicely done and approached smile.gif

I will sign you up if you are still up for it biggrin.gif

Dexxter almost 100% perfect ! Really nice ideas, and skips I liked it.

Check out Emin7 Amin7 Dmin7 G7 section.

Over G7 last note you played was E which is non chord tone.
If you want to correct that, go ahead, otherwise everything else is great !

So no "Color tones" ?

Strictly chord tones? Shouldn't bee too hard, I'll do another take when I get home from Rehearsals.

Harry this was almost perfect !
When you had D min7 to G , you anticipated at the end of beat 4 with B note over D min 7 , which is non chord tone in D min7 but is chord tone in G. So thats the only minus in the whole solo. Everything else was great.

Can this was solid take but like in others, this one had some non chord tones. One thing worth correcting would be D min7 going to G7 before heading to E min7 section. Over D min7 you played non chord tones. Try to correct that, if you have time to submit another take that would be great.

Thanks !
