Help. I have been (trying) to play guitar since I joined GMC. I think the lessons and this site are the best anywhere. I just don't know if I am improving at all. I do have all the structurs of my barre and power chords down. I have the minor pentatonic scale dawn, but it still sounds only like a scale when I play it, and nothing really "musical" at all. In the last week, I (finally) feel I have got the "CAGED" chords dwon, and can smoothly switvh from one chord to the other. I am having a lot of trouble with being able to play songs from tab. Even if I know the song really well...I cannot seem to get it to sound like the recording. It truly think it is in my strumming. I don't know what to do to fix it. Also, anyone have any songs that uses mostly power chords? Something I can play to build my confidence.
I sincerely thank all of you for your input and taking the time to read my rambles smile.gif

what kind of music do you like? maybe you need to get equipment that sounds similiar to the types of music you listen to. try things like distortion pedals. might get you more in the mood.
what I've found really helped me is guitar pro. you can play a part over and over again of the tab so that you can get the rhythm and timing down

Hi. Thanks for your input...it really does mean a lot. Yes, one of the things is my poor amp sound. I have a Fender Frontman 25R...and I cannot get a decent distortion sound out of it. I had a Digitech rp100, but the darn thing broke on me...I gotta get something else soon as I can. What is guitar pro? I like classic metal mostly...but I listen to a lot of diff music from classid rock to jazz to fusion to..well anything but rap...lol

Hey Man
If you are shure you understand how to read tabs and it's just playing it thats the problem,a good band thats not to hard to play would be Nirvana.Alot of people learned how to play off there stuff .Also Black Sabbath is a classic metal band that isnt very hard to start out on.Just make sure you understand how to read the music, then listen to it and try to play it.Remember dont give up,guitar isnt for quiter's .You can do it ,its just how bad to you want it and how much time can you put into your practicing. smile.gif
Best of luck and if you need anymore help or just wanna chat about guitar you can pm me.

Distortion is a big one for me.Does your amp have a distortion or overdrive setting? If so do you have it all balanced out or set correctly to get the best sound?Agree with you on the rap aswell .I have always felt rap is a mispelled word unless you add a c to it laugh.gif

hi. Thanks for the input. I love Black Sabbath. Any ideas on which of their songs to start with. I really consider myself more of a rhythm/riff plyer anyways. My amp does have a distortion setting, but I can;t figure out how to set the tone knobs to get a good sound. I have a Dimarzio Super Distortion in my Les Pal copy. Thank you for all the help.

Another program, which is free, is called PowerTab.

While not as good as GP, I find PT files have more chords written in which makes things easier for me.

Green Day is another band that is almost 100% Power Chords and everyone likes at least a couple of their songs!
