So in a pro audio forum section someone commented he couldn't hear differences specifically with hall reverbs.

I recommended listening to them at the same level, then for the fun of it made these examples (they are all loudness matched). They are different hall presets from various reverb plug-ins. I only tried to match the wet/dry and tail length, so the character differences wouldn't be misunderstood. Let me know if you have a preference too smile.gif

Just download and paste them to your music player. There's also a clean sample for comparison;

https://gofile.io/d/vRmiqK

List of reverbs and presets I selected in them;

Acon Digital Verberate 2; large hall natural
Voxengo crtiv reverb 2; Default
UVI Sparkverb; Concert
ValhallaRoom; Largehall
Toneboosters reverb; hall lush reverb
Relab lx480; Boston hall A
Fabfilter pro-r; Concert hall Sydney
Exponential audio Phoenixverb; lge Rear hall
Exponential audio R4; Lrg Back hall
Eventide Ultrareverb; 480esue large hall

They're all very close ... and all really good sounding.
The Eventide was the only one where I actually noticed a difference right away. It's got an early reflection in there that I can perceive. Maybe there's more pre-delay set(?)
The Valhalla has the nicest/lushest decay.
Any of them would be a great choice for those needing some verb.

Thanks for listening smile.gif

I think eventide simply had the least "character" for this. It barely has any hall presets and adjusting to meet such sound wasn't fun. A signature sound for 80's lo-fi, good for creative fx etc. but doesn't have such delicacy.

Loved the tickly character on the high-mids of valhalla (seems I adjusted the tail a bit longer than others so thats why it may be more apparent), re-lab and fabfilter. It's specially apparent when high note reverb sustains clash. So in a way, you not only get the reverb needed but add sweetness to the track too. I think this makes the difference for reverb for music vs cinematic (cinematic as trying to be more realistic).

Finally, I was most curious on the exponential audio reverbs (r4, phonix as these are discounted often to very low prices). I can say the hype is real but I still feel in the learning curve as they're new to me. Specially R4 has a lot of potential to be discovered;

But yeah each gives something to the sound, either giving more thickness, flatter/controlled response or simply neutral. I wish I had the time to make full mixes to make these more apparent but that would be extremely hard to do.

Also a quick note; headphone eq'ing/flattening plug-in really helped when needed. Though sonarworks is most popular, years ago when I compared morphit was my preference.

@Mertay ...
Your ears are way more trained than mine when it comes to recording fx!

This may be only in the States but Valhalla is giving away 3 plugins. They don't design many, I think only nine and they are primarily reverbs and they never discount - everything is always $50. If you scroll down, you'll see three that are listed as 'Free'. Space Mod, Freq Echo and Super Massive. Completely unannounced.

I was actually looking if he'd make a discount to alarm friends but we can say he's generous when it comes to providing freeware.

Pretty amazing, he's just a single man company (to my knowledge) yet even a software giant like izotope is trying to cut his sales by giving insane discounts. These are the discounts;

https://www.pluginboutique.com/product/2-Ef...-Reverb/5231-R4
https://www.pluginboutique.com/product/2-Ef...enixVerb-Stereo

So I still stand-by my comment on a previous topic we discussed reverbs, would be perfectly felt secured if only owned valhalla stuff at this point! but being a nerd (specially when I'm bored, and this covid era is really boring biggrin.gif ) I keep my eyes open for options when available smile.gif

I think I'm going to get the Valhalla Plate. I really love the 'plate' texture around a note.
I don't really do anything where I need huge reverbs (or delays). In fact everything I record here at home for other people - all they want is my 'dry' sound, no effects.

Makes sense, its usually risky to get a wet track as all kinds of changes happen to a production along the way.

I open val. plate almost instantly when needing plate but didn't compare it to other stuff to be honest, must also test this sometime biggrin.gif but out of curiosity I checked the discounts going on today, the only thing I found more affordable which can be an option was the waves abbey plate. I like waves reverbs but don't use them cause waves central software, their wup etc. read too much complaints on their business model.
