GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ "satriani" Ibanez Guitar..

Posted by: Jesse Apr 12 2009, 03:22 PM

Heyo, I got this dvd, the Satch Tapes, and I'm impressed with his playing. He is damn good!
I got a stratocaster ,which is awesome for almost anything. But I was thinking about something with humbuckers so I could play metal (not that I play metal alot) and satriani style stuff BETTER. My strat has singlecoils, the output is a bit low because of that. I was seaching on some site and found these, are they actually better than my stratocaster regarding satriani stuff and neoclassical shred thingy's? Love the look tbh:D I thought it would be a good buy, they're not expensive.http://www.musik-produktiv.de/ibanez-signature-js100tr-joe-satriani.aspx

Recommondation's are welcome!!! Just not the Jem... I hate that thing with a passion!

Jesse.....are you wanting a trem? If not you could have a body just like that built but put a fixed bridge on it. Just a thought. Those are nice guitars though.

Posted by: Jesse Apr 12 2009, 03:47 PM

Yeah, need a trem, I need to make it squeal:D Like satriani does.

Yeah, but is it really good?

Have you tought about an Ibanez S470 it's in my opinion way better:

It has ZR bridge the JS has Edge II bridge.
It has a lightweight mahogany body, JS has basswood body.
Both have 22 frets S470 jumbo, JS medium frets
S470has a H-S-H puckup configuaration with to be honest not so good pickups, the JS has H-H pickups configuaration with also not very good pickups.
Then the price S470 = 498 euros while the JS costs 698 euros.

My personal conclusion is that the S470 is a better guitar for me personal because for the 200 euros you pay more for the JS 100 you can easely find good pickups to replace the stock ones from the S470.
Did i mentioned that the S470 has very good sustain much better then the current S prestige guitars, i was planning well still planning to buy a black S470 but i got a Fender strat for my birthday so i put it on hold untill the end of the year.

hope this helped.

I agree with this 100%.....I had a JS body built and put a ZR in it though. I like the JS bod better but I just can't say enough good things about the ZR. THEY ROCK....especially if you are gonna be doing A LOT of Satch squeals.

Awesome! Could you help me with some pickups? I honestly don't know any good ones for that kind of stuff:D Cool, we both have a strat!

That guitar is from Korea, but it is good right? Not like some cheap remake thing...?

Ok, one question tho:D
How can a 500 guitar beat my stratocaster :X?
Are the humbuckers THAT much better? I mean, shouldn't an ibanez be around 1000 then too??

I love strats but the S470 has an advantage over a strat aswell comfort because of the sleek body but don't let it fool you because of the thin body the tone is huge.

I'm no expert on pickups but Dimarzio pickups are very affordable if you are really into satriani i think the PAF Pro would be nice they are used in the neck position, i read that they are really friendly to single coils and make a good setup combined with a hotter bridge pickup maybe the tone zone i think that will be good for metal there are soundclips on the dimarzio website you can listen to but i don't think you should expect thesame sound. Maybe for the single coil a pro track but like i said i'm no expert and i don't think you should stick to one brand.

Greetz,
Chris

Ah bedankt:D wink.gif Paf Pro's are cool, I saw a video, and Gilbert used those as well. So thats the tone zone and the PAF PRO?The tone zone is good for metal, but I don't really play that, and I don't really know what pickups satriani uses for most of his songs. Can't I just buy HIS pickups, or is that too expensive:D

Paf pros is what satriani uses in the JS 1600 he has a paf pro in the neck and a Fred in the bridge but anyways i don't think you could go wrong if you use what he has in his guitars but then you only have to add a single coil pickup in the middle position smile.gif

Posted by: Jesse Apr 12 2009, 04:42 PM

yeah , Ill keep that singlecoyl that first:D Ok. Im getting a paf pro and a fred then I guessD:

Those are fairly cheap, I'm definately saving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

With my birthday in July, I think I could actually get enough money by the end of the year. I will ask money, and ill save a bit and I'll have the money to get the guitar. Then at 5th december I can ask for the pickups:LD YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

Posted by: 29a Apr 12 2009, 04:45 PM

I've got a S470 and it is a good guitar. There are two things that I didn't like on it: the bridge pickup (I replaced it with a dimarzio evolution) and the trem. The trem is just a pain in the butt to set up properly, but they generally are.

But I've got another recommendation for you: Ibanez RG 1570. It costs about 200€ more but it's a made in Japan prestige model and quality wise probably superior to the S470 and the JS-100. Give it a try.

He gets a lot of his sound from his Peavey JSX amp as well mate, they are good value but still moderately expensive in amp terms, is your exisitng amp up to the job do you think?

Posted by: Jesse Apr 12 2009, 04:46 PM

lool, dont take it as racist. But I don't like a guitar from Japan:P

I got fender frontman 65 watt. Ill just get a satchurator too:D

Then you still need to replace the pickups because the V7 & V8 are really not good for distortion they are very good when playing on the clean chanel tough .

Posted by: Jesse Apr 12 2009, 04:57 PM

Im getting the paf pro and the fred:) Yes I AM:D plus S470 hehe By 2010, I'll have one. And my skills will be that much better so I can play satch boogie!

In my opinion they are already far better than the inf bridge pickup on the S470. But on the other hand I love the neck pu on the S470 a lot. I guess it's not just the PU but also the fact that it's a 22 fret guitar.

Do you have the ZR Jonas? The ZR takes like 5 minutes to set up....very simple. smile.gif

So far I've heard nothing but insanely good things about Japanese work ethics and craftsmanship, even when making guitars.

Besides - Ibanez is a Japanese company. It sounds a bit like wanting a Fender but absolutely no Fender USA. tongue.gif

Sorry to butt in (I'm interested in the JS, too!), I was just a bit interested in that remark.

I've got an Ibanez S470 with an ZR Trem in there and it took me about an hour to get it properly set up the last time I did it. Just changing strings is ok, but once the intonation is messed up its painful to readjust everything.

All the high end Ibanez guitars are made in Japan (Team J. Craft), even Steve Vai´s JEM. The Korean factory makes the cheap stuff. I don´t think there are any USA made Ibanez guitars. Also in the 80´s Fender moved their USA factory to Japan, but moved back to USA in early 90´s. So guitars from Japan are top quality. smile.gif

Posted by: Jesse Apr 12 2009, 10:14 PM

One more Ibanez question. I think I really would like the style body Satch has. You know, no edges, it's all curved and smooth. Do only the JS signatures have these body styles, or are there cheaper versions with that body. I'm planning on putting in new pickups anyway. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH.................................

you are kidding right.

japan = higher quality....

if i were you, for the price, id get a used ibanez radius

its the same thing as a JS but BETTER

lo pro edge trem (the best trem ever made IMO)
the body is like the JS (the JS is not an S, its a Radius)
the neck is the wizard 1, the thinnest and fastest playing neck ibanez has ever released!

thats what id do, but for some reason, people on this forum are a afraid of buying used guitars

Posted by: Sircraigery Apr 13 2009, 02:43 AM

I agree with Marc, used is the way to go. As long as you have the cash in hand of course, but then again I would never finance anything except a house and a car.

I don't know how the economy is in Europe right now, but here it sucks. Use that to your advantage, desperate sellers will sell for desperate prices.

Posted by: Marshmall0wz Apr 13 2009, 03:05 AM

Just so you know i have played 3 japanese guitars (fender) and they were hands down crafted better than every AMERICAN guitar ive played smile.gif. maybe they were just like the holy grails of japanese guitars

Posted by: Jesse Apr 13 2009, 10:08 AM

Maybe you just have'nt played a good USA One. ANd NO I AM NOT BUYING A USED GUITAR,
NEVER.

Back on topic:P Isn't there another way to get an ibanez with the satriani style smooth body? Or do I have to buy the cheaper JS signature and put the PAF Joe and DiMarzio FRED In them, or is that guitars bridge worthless.... ?

I ALWAYS PLAY second hand guitars, they rock tongue.gif Look at it this way: you can either pay the same as for a new guitar, but get twice the quality, or you can pay half for the same guitar!! The only difference is that it might have a scratch or two, but who cares? If you try them out, and they seem to play just fine, than you just saved a lot of money to buy, say, a new amp, or a pickup upgrade!

Posted by: Jesse Apr 13 2009, 10:58 AM

You really don't get it do you? I don't want to play on something where someone else put their soul into already. I wanta guitar, that is only mine.

After seeing that body, hmmmmmm I really want the smooth satch style body.

The edge pro which is in the more expensive JS models and Jem is actually not that expensive if you know where to find them, so for an estimated 400 euros extra on top of the price of the JS 100 you are already in the prestige pricerange...

It's your choice but for that money i would buy an RG 2550Z prestige and that satchurtor or whatever it's called.

Posted by: Jesse Apr 13 2009, 04:17 PM

Yeah. I really dislike that one's body:D. Can I get your msn? Maybe we can chat a little on there, its faster!

Posted by: Marc_Maiden Apr 13 2009, 08:34 PM

well lets ask you this....why do you want the JS model in the first place?

have you tried the guitar out before?

Posted by: ChrisVdS Apr 13 2009, 09:10 PM

i stopped using msn about 3 years ago smile.gif and i don't use any other chat programs because i have no time for it wink.gif

The RG has a big body but that never bothered me maybe you should look at Schecter C-1 guitars they look awesome and some of them have a tremelo system but the original floyd roses i think the C-1 Hellraiser looks damn awesome.

Actually there are USA made Ibanez guitars the Ibanez custom shop is located in the USA but unlike Fender you can't just go over there say what you want and have it made they only make guitars for Ibanez endorsers.

Posted by: Marc_Maiden Apr 13 2009, 09:15 PM

actually, there are no such thing as USA made ibanez...the LA factory hasnt been producing guitars for a long time. Even so, they were japanese made, and assembled in the USA, just like fender guitars.

Ibanez had the name "Ibanez USA" because in the 70's, japanese guitars had a bad rep, so ibanez found a representative in the US in Bensalem, PA (which is why older ibanez guitars have a neck plate with Bensalem on them) and imported them from japan, calling themselves ibanez USA.

even for endorsers its almost impossible to get a true custom...most endorsees just get discounts on ibanez products...and at most, ibanez guitars with small customizations to them

korean quality is OK, not on par with MIJ, but OK

indo and chinese = yucky, although once in a while you will find a nice one

That sound's like a bad idea. It's going to cost you about 1100€. Given that price range and the fact that you want a tremolo the Ibanez prestige Guitars are probably your best bet. If you don't like the RGs there are also S Prestige models, they are a bit more expensive though.

For all that you are wanting Jesse....I would just get a custom. You can have a JS body built to your specs and then get a neck the same way.....you coul even buy a Prestige 24 fret neck off of ebay and put it on the JS body. You could have the JS routed for whatever bridge you want. When you buy a JS you are spending a lot just for his name... smile.gif

Posted by: Marc_Maiden Apr 13 2009, 10:37 PM

Icsdds makes a good point

except for the 24 fret neck (it would not fit right on the body because it is made for 22 fret neck),

but any "S" 22fret neck would work, including the AANJ wizard 1s from the early 90's (but you dont like used stuff so i guess you are stuck with Wiz 2 necks)

If you build a custom body you could have it built for a 24 fret neck....I have two of them. That was the reason I went the custom route. I wanted a JS with 24 frets and a ZR trem....Only way to do that is custom. smile.gif

Js style body:D I think I will save for the satriani signature 700 euro's. Then buy pickups afterwards. And maybe a new bridge after a year or so.

The only thing I dont like is that it says Joe Satriani at the 20th fret

Will do.....What bridge do you want it routed for....don't think it matters as far as cost though.

Posted by: Jesse Apr 14 2009, 04:17 PM

the best one.. if it doesnt matter as far as cost. I would like the ibanez headstock, and kind of thin fender strat rosewood neck xD

But, u got some info on his quality..? Where does he get his stuff from..? Doesnt sound good:D

WE ARE NO LONGER TAKING CUSTOM ONE OFF ORDERS......WE WILL ONLY MAKE THE NECKS AND BODIES THAT WE ARE CURRENTLY IN PRODUCTION TO DO.....ALL THE CUSTOM STUFF TAKES WAY TOO LONG AND COST TOO MUCH MONEY.....WE WILL ALSO BE MAKING A PAGE OF CURRENT STOCK WITH PRICES AND PICTURES FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY....AND WILL PRIMARILY SELL FROM THAT....IF YOU THINK YOU MAY WANT SOMETHING DOWN THE ROAD WITH DIFFERENT WOODS, THEN GIVE ME A HEADS UP AND ILL TRY TO MAKE IT....RIGHT NOW I AM ONLY FINISHING UP OUTSTANDING ORDERS AND SHOULD HAVE THAT DONE BY THE END OF THE WEEK...

Jesse, for 700E I would seriously consider buying all the parts separately and building it yourself!!! have a look at http://www.warmoth.com/Default.aspx!! I've built several guitars using their parts and their quality is awesome!!!

It's quite hard to get on with this site. The products are cool, but I can't seem to buy anything, I am logged in...

Marc...of all the "Edge" trems which one do you feel is the best. I am only familiar with the Edge Zero and ZR....both of which ROCK!!! smile.gif

I think you'll be happiest doing this....I would order the body now if you can...probably be about $200-250...could take 3-6 months just to get this. I'll check for you. smile.gif

i like the lo pro edge...the quality was amazing, and on the guitar i have now, its lasted 15 years!

the edge pro and edge zero are somewhat the same except that the zero has the ZR system integrated which is cool..honestly...there is no difference, some say the edge zero feels a little stiff, but i prefer that actually

the reason why they dont make lo pro edges anymore is because it got to expensive using floyd rose patents

Try this site, this guy makes nothing else then Ibanez guitars i'm pretty sure he will be able to make the JS body but most of his work is Jem & RG that i have seen so far. You can also buy the edge pro from this guy smile.gif

That is Jaden Rose. He does nice work from what I have seen. I am almost positive he doesn't do the JS body. There are quite a few guys that do RG/Jem replacement bodies. I have only seen one that does JS bodies......and believe me I have looked.....long and hard. tongue.gif

Posted by: ChrisVdS Apr 14 2009, 11:35 PM

I would not mind having an RG body made by this guy wink.gif

You can find a lot of luthiers that can make you a nice replacement RG body.....not so with the JS. I just emailed Jaden Rose. He doesn't do the JS body. smile.gif

Unfortunately many people don't. With the RG and JEM styles all the machining is CNC and straightforward, due to the shape of the JS there's a hella lot of work in shaping it after the basic cut!!! Although his 'Shadow' is more of a Carved Top than the Ibanez copies!! He does great work though! He's also a great resource for DiMarzio!!

Heard nothing but good things about Jaden. smile.gif Just doesn't do the JS. The JS bodies I had built from Doug Bass at Monsterguitarshop turned out really nice. He can do them for any trem route and any neck pocket....22 or 24 fret. smile.gif

Thanks for the H/up!!! I'll bear it in mind!! I've a couple of Strats to finish building and my next project for myself was going to be an RG/JEM type, I'll be looking elsewhere now!! I was going to use one of Jaden's but I don't think I'll be able to afford it!!
Oh well, back to Warmoth!!!!

You could try ET guitars....based out of Austrailia. You could also use Monsterguitarshop....he does good work and he is the quickest that I have dealt with, but I have only dealt with two. I dealt with legacy.....got my stuff OK it just wasn't useable. A lot of folks didn't get their stuff or a refund. I'd STAY AWAY for sure. He goes by Deep6 guitars on ebay too. Do a search at jemsite before having a custom RG built....or you could just ask me....I have read a ton on the forums at jemsite regarding the Ibanez custom builders. smile.gif

Ahh, I've seen Deep6 on eBay!!! Just had a look at ET and am quite impressed!!! I'd already checked out MGS from earlier in the thread!!!! I wasn't going to have one 'built' rather than 'Assemble' it myself!!! really appreciate all the info Monte!!

You can get MSG to just build you a guitar body.....that is how I did my JS and RG bodies. What specifically are you wanting that has you going the custom route?

Nothing too specific really! I have a friend who can laminate anything I present to him with some amazing Veneers and it won't cost quite as much as getting something 'Custom Built' as such! I have a wonderful old Jaguar that he did in Burr Walnut for me!!
