Question Thats Pretty Hard To Title Options

This might sound as a weird question but here we go.

When playing something like, for example 14 - 13 - 12 on the B string (just as an example), should I place my first, middle, and ring finger on the frets and then pick 14, raise the ring finger, play 13, raise the middle finger, and then play the 12, OR:
place only the ring finger on the 14 fret, then after its picked raise it while placing down the middle finger on the 13 fret, then after its picked raise the middle finger while placing down the first finger on the 12 fret.

I feel like naturally I want to do the second way, but I feel like the first way might be the better thing to get used to.
