Well, I just really wanted the chewing tobacco, but yes I'll try to make this one.

Kidding about the chew, but maybe some PBR would be ok. smile.gif

Congrats man!

Wow, I don't know what to say other than I appreciate that... you are too kind sir.

To answer the question.... Why am I so hard on myself? Honestly it is hard for me because I am not a "technical" guitarist, I don't even feel like a beginner. I have a co worker who just picked up the guitar last October and he already knows way more chords than I do yet he tells me that he wants me to teach him how to play. LOL... that's easy, I can tell him all I know in about 3 minutes. The rest is on the fly and by any creative salt I can muster.

I have to plink around like a blind rat in a maze to find where I need to be on the fretboard most of the time. The most I can tell you is a general idea of where each note starts on the frets and that is using the 6th string as my guide.... I don't know all of my chords or scales and I don't mean ALL as in the total number known to man, I mean literally that I only know a handful of chords LOL, and after I played them I probably couldn't name them... I just play by ear and feeling. So pretty pathetic, but when I do have the time to place a guitar in my hands, I don't usually spend that time on theory as it would be a lost cause. I wouldn't be exposed enough for it to stick.

So sometimes these collabs don't come easy to me, however for the creative side I am able to visualize what I want to hear, I'm just not "guitar smart" enough to translate through my fingers to the strings by saying ahhh yes, I can plug in an A Minor here or a G Major there. I need to have the guitar in my hand and just feel around in the dark. I've done this so long that sometimes I am able to fool people into thinking that I know what I am doing... literally like a blind man may know the layout of his house so it seems as if he can see where everything is as he navigates his way through, but if you move a chair he will trip on it.

If I know what key the song is in, like I said I just go to that general area and plink around the strings until it sounds right enough to me.

Now obviously I have a good understanding of some scales, but I don't really grasp any one of them enough to just run them up and down the neck with ease until after I figure out where everything is at that I want to play, or that matches a chord progression.

Now I'm sure I'm not the only person who plays like this, but this best answers your question. smile.gif

I have to play by ear, but most important for me is feeling. This backing for me struck a good feeling although I had a bit of a rough time translating it. I know you had the scale generator with the fret board showing the notes on the collab, and that helps, but I was still having a tough time translating out from my head to the frets.

So, I suppose that is about as deep as I can go with an answer. That is truly where I am at with my guitar playing. So my secret is out, I'm guitar blind! blink.gif

So it's a good thing I only play for fun... biggrin.gif

It means alot when I can actually come up with something that generates a compliment or two... especially since you guys are some top notch guitarists, and I don't mean just the instructors, but my classmates as well. You guys tearing it up is what keeps me motivated to drudge forward.

Thanks again Cosmin. Made my evening smile.gif

Mate, if your blindness is the same as the one that this man has:

Then keep being blind and develop the eyes of your ears smile.gif

I think you have chosen a great set of notes, you have a great tone and touch - why don't you work in that direction alongside learning the language of your instrument? You can become very good at it!

That's mostly why I chose to join GMC was to better understand these things. It's a slow process for me... Firstly, I'm slow smile.gif and second, is having the time to study the process. So, whether I get there or not... I still enjoy the collabs and the community.

I have learned a lot from by brethren here. I'm mostly glad to just have other musicians to interract with... that helps me more than anything. wink.gif

How are the takes going mates? biggrin.gif

Howdy Cosmin!

In between all of my singing extravaganza today, I managed to record something for this collab!

I focused on the metal parts, everything I put over the country parts sounded awful biggrin.gif

Other than that, I subscribe to everything Mark said in his long post...it is exactly the same for me Mark!

In progress right now Cosmin. I should have it up in the next couple days. The length makes this one tougher than usual but breaking it down into 3-4 individual sections, and trying to focus on one at a time seems to help. My formula for this is basically (1)country - (2)rock - (3)blues - (4)rock.

Also, great takes already guys!

I did something a little different for this one and recorded with my 1953 Multikord 6 string pedal steel to get a little country blues rockin kinda vibe. Hope you like it! smile.gif Great backing Cosmin! Thanks man! cool.gif

Hey Krise, glad to see I'm not the only one... smile.gif That was a killer take too man.... You had the gloves on didn't you?

AK, that was AWESOMENESS!.... and some good stealth too... LOL, You must be the kinda cowboy that wears a white hat and can tell no lies... biggrin.gif hehe. This steel you are rockin now is the bomb, I'm gonna tune one of mine to an open key of some sort and start playing around with the slide..... oh and the whammy, can't leave that out.

Dieter my man...... all this before breakfast? You wake up with some true grit and attitude under your pillow my friend... This one indeed made my day.

Greg is a thinkin man, so this is gonna be an excellent take.... So if this were a true western, Krise and myself would be riding in guns blazing on horse back shooting everything that moves.

Rich would come in with two sawed of double barrel shotguns kickin in doors and not worried about takin no names.

Dieter is just walking right down the middle of the street smoking a cigar and smacking dudes with his bare hands.

Meanwhile still on the ridge about a quarter mile off.... Greg is still roasting his black coffee and shaving up nice and clean for his kill, cause he's already calculated the wind speed, direction, distance and where the sun will be. So the bad guy gang leader who thinks he's escaped riding off on his horse while the rest of us take out his clan, is just prolonging his death thinking he's gotten away clean. Little does he know, Greg is watchin and sippin his hot black coffee (much like he likes his lady companions).... oh in this story I mean of course... smile.gif anyhow, Greg has a sip, raises his rifle and tweaks the scope.... leads the dude a bit.... and by GOD it's a killer lead too brothers....then BOOM! It's done with precision! Marshall Cosmin gives us our reward of another Vchat same time next week. Cause we've earned it.

THE END!

Yea yea yea, OK........ I get up in the morning full of that stuff that Rich stepped in earlier. ROFL!!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Mar 18 2013, 09:11 AM

Bravo Mr. Mark "Twain" Roberts!
Reading this made my day, who knew you were such a talented author!
Cosmin should make a video for this ... your text would gently scroll over the screen with the final audio mix in the background!
And thanks to Dieter, I will have the song Desperado stuck in my ear all day biggrin.gif
Is it just my impression or are these collabs getting better and better?

Hehe! Could be an idea biggrin.gif

Glad you like it guys!

Posted by: mroberts70 Mar 18 2013, 02:15 PM

LOL.... Thanks Krise, who know what I'll come up with.... I don't even know from one time to the next. lol

That little story just seemed fitting with all the takes and personalities. I was just figuring since you agreed with most of my other long winded message that it'd be you and I rolling in with no method to the madness other than shooting the place up.... hehe biggrin.gif . I was comparing Rich's steel guitar awesomeness with that of a double barrel blast x2.... Dieter of course would be our "Clint Eastwood" type with that "Go ahead, make my day " look in his eye..... but Greg, he had it mapped out and was very calculated on the big score. Seemed fitting that Cos was the Marshall wink.gif

I'm also not quite sure how our Southern Metal collab got turned into a full on western, but I like it. I think it's getting to be rather epic! Maybe it was my fault.. tongue.gif

Seems our "Posse" needs to be a little bigger though. C'mon Cos, go recruit some more and I'll further extend my cast of charcters.... I've already got ideas for the friends I already know. wink.gif

It's also looking like Crsn may be looking for a piece of this collab action.... I have a feelin he's gonna Doc Holiday this one, but we'll see....

Cos, I hope you're ready for all the bada$$edness you've started...?

did you just challenge me-----boy

Posted by: mroberts70 Mar 19 2013, 05:11 PM

No sir, just tryin to help recruit..... heard you were the man for the job.

So.... Marshall Cosmin was calling to all able bodied riff slingers to join his Armed and Dangerous posse' when amidst the blazing guitar riffs, putrid smell of bodily functions and teeth shattering heavy metal licks appeared a man who was known in these parts only as"Jstcrsn". It was said that he once dropped a fool just for making eye contact. (it was later learned that he gets a little mean when hes been up all hours of the night trying to keep the younger members of the crsn clan from bein too rowdy) smile.gif

Armed with a bandolier full of TNT (aye) and a fist full of metal..... he stood sizing up the situation. What will happen next?

This could be the first official GMC screenplay. biggrin.gif

Add in some old western movie scenes to the background with mroberts script and this thing could get crazy!

HAHA... funniest thing here is that I was just playin spouting off my usual BS..... and now I'm doing a story line. Sheesh! That's pretty bad. LOL... biggrin.gif

Atleast the characters are awesome!

The Lone Plains Drifter, Sensible Jones, dismounts from his horse and enters the Saloon.
Slowly he walks to the Bar, his boot heels echoing around the now still Saloon. He takes a shot of Ol' Red Eye and turns to face the group of Cowboys already seated around a table.
Purposely he strides over to the table, knocks back the shot, reaches down and slowly draws back the flanks of his long Coat. He then drops his loaded six-strings onto the Collab............

DeGroot, man I am gonna stop listening to your takes before I post mine. biggrin.gif Yours make me rethink things!!! Nice job, as always!

Disclaimer: This is the first time I have been able to use a slide for more than 5 minutes without getting irritated and throwing it. laugh.gif And it is also not exactly what I was hoping for and had to piece a couple takes together. I just could not get it to come together.
Cosmin, I took you comments in the last collab and really tried to apply them in this one. Although the slide may not be exactely to pitch I think the bends may be better and the licks I think have a resolution or a path, a purpose. Hopefully you will agree. Anyway, this was such a fun backing I found myself playing the backing a couple times throughout. This is my style all the way. Although it's not as perfect as I would like, I put a lot of effort into it, hopefully it comes through at least a little. wink.gif

Dude, this is solid! I hear you about the slide (rarely play it myself) I think we both managed to pull out some "wild west" slides here. laugh.gif Of course, AK Rich is all guns blazing with the steel pedal. Wow, talk about dusting off the big guns. Jones also has his slide out and having Billy the Kid thinking twice about being quick on the draw. Okay, I'll leave the narrative to Sheriff Mark and Debuty Cosmin.. biggrin.gif But really enjoyed the rest of the takes and vibe here. Looking forward to the mix once the dust settles.

HA... got it finally.... and VonHotch can put another VonNotch in your gun belt cause you KILLED it! You sure you're from "Upstate New York" friend? Hmmmm... smile.gif

... off in the distance was indeed a curious sight.... it appeared to be what looked like a horse drawn coach meandering it's way toward town. Sitting atop was a burly man wearing a top hat and tails... and down the side of his coach read "Doc. VonHotch's Cure All".

Doc VonHotch rode right smack dab in the middle of town, gave the reins a yank and yelled WOAH Dammit! in a gruff voice, he paused for a second and with squinted eye he looked around to see if he had taken the interest of any onlookers... then locked in the wheel break and lit his cigar... all while paying mind to those who stared at him with that "skeptical dis-believing" look in their eye...

"That's right disbelievers, ol' Doc'll fix you right up.

Then with out warning, he spun around in his seat, pulled a single pin on his coach and all four sides dropped right down to the ground only to reveal the biggest damn Gatling gun anyone had ever seen....

Yes indeed disbelievers, step right up.... Ol' Doc VonHotch's got what'll cure you indeed....

It then became blatantly apparent to the other 10 roughnecks just exactly why Marshall Cosmin recruited Ol' Doc.... he had that certain charm that could easily steal the heart of even the meanest of fools.

As he started turning hand crank on his patented "cure al"l machine you could hear him say..... "trust me, I'm a Doctor"! :0

Well you know Chris, I was trying to capture the essence of our very own VonHotch in knowing that you like to experient with different notes and sounds to doctor them up and see what you could come up with, so I figured the title Doc would be fitting. Plus once you've done that a bit and come up with a sic beat and some cool riffs.... no one would see it coming. smile.gif At least that was the idea... May have not quite made it there, but it was in mind at least. cool.gif

I'm going back through to see if I've missed anyone too since I had a day or two there where I was unable to browse the thread...

I believe I owe Patrik a character persona to which he may read this and say....uhhh no thanks man I'm good. lol

Anyhow, I may have to pick him with the stuff I'm giving to Cos since he is ready for this to be completed... So didn't forget about you Patrik...! though you may wish I had...

Ready???

Here it is!!

Thanks to everyone for participating and especially to Mr Roberts for taking care of the storytelling and to all of you for your fine playing and energy you brought to this collab!

AK Rich - I just couldn't live with myself if I wouldn't've let your take do the talking for almost the entire length of the track. Great slide playing sir!

Cosmin - Tried to emulate a little slide playing - finger style - so it would sound more organic biggrin.gif

DeGroot - another incredibly genuine take which I loved very much! Hats off, mate!

Dieterle - I teamed you up with DG so that you could add a great ending to the double effort take! I think you caught a few very nice phrases man!

Patrik Berg and vonhotch - it can't get any better than this for an intro! I think that your takes complemented each other so well in the intro, that I had to use them both as in some sort of a dialogue!

jstcrsn - mate, I have used your take for the body of the piece after Patrik and vonhotch set the atmosphere. I like the energy, but you should focus on the phrasing a little bit more!

mroberts70 - great story once again man! And the mid part of your take fit like a glove in here! I liked it, but as a suggestion, you could focus on the direction in your playing for the future, you tend to hold the playing in one place some times - hope I am being clear enough smile.gif

Guitarrero - Christian already knows that I always liked his endings for my collabs and this one made no exception, although it was just the ending of one cycle biggrin.gif Thanks for being consistent mate wink.gif

Gregc1 - great groovy riff and playing man, I really enjoyed your take as well!

Sensible Jones - another slider here - I caught some really genuine slide playing in your take as well, my friend, congratulations!

Slavenko Eraser - Slav's first collab with my crew! Congrats and thanks for providing the perfect piece to end the whole track! I liked the effect and the playing. In the rest of the take though, you should focus less on shredding and more on phrasing and melody, in orderto have a stronger direction!

Gentlemen, it was VERY hard to select the best pieces and come up with a fairly short track - this is the shortest I could get, cross my heart biggrin.gif

See you in the next collab - available this Friday! biggrin.gif

Thank you all again and I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did!

Cosmin

Thanks Cosmin, u put this all together very nice.

I like the idea that there's a written story behind this (Thanks to Rob ), instead of just video of us playing! smile.gif
