Has anyone ever heard of this? I never thought about it before. After reading this article I think I will start trying that.

Said this for years and have even written a forum thread here abut it so it's nice to know it's not just me. Years ago when I did my training the head engineer used to put gaffa tape across all the meters to make sure that we listened rather than just watched levels. If you gainstage properly you do not need meters.
