So i was at my buddies place and i was looking at his monitors while we were jamming and saw that his guitar was actually plugged into his computer into a program called guitar rig.. i got him to tell me a little bit about it.. basically it is a virtual guitar rig, where you can download different preamps and choose your head and cab + preamps + all your effects and really generate your own vintage tone.. and if you put it on your laptop and take your laptop with you and plug it into a modeling amp its just as good as owning a whole rack of preamps.

http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/GuitarRigWin/

whats everyone think? is it worth it.. cause im definatly thinking about it smile.gif

I personally have found that software tends to sound less than acceptable to my ears, but I've never tried this program. It's worth giving it a try if you like what you're friends rig sounded like.

Check out my lesson, it was recorded using Guitar Rig 3, and in my opinion it rules big time, I don't use anything else at home. As far as I remember you can download a demo version at their homepage so you could try it.

If you know what you're doing then you can create a pretty damn good EP. Check out www.myspace.com/voiceofthesouluk as EVERY guitar was done using GUITAR RIG 3 biggrin.gif I think it came out bloody good but our album we are recording by micing up amps and doing it tyhe proper way I guess.

I used GR2 a lot before buying Pandora, and it's working fine for recording. All my acoustic lessons and the little finger workout were done by GR2. smile.gif

On the other hand, I am not sure how it would sound live on stage unsure.gif

It's a nice software, didn't used GR3 (must try, thanks for advice Marcus), but GR2 wasn't very good for me. It does have a lot of options, many simulations, the sound was too thin almost on every one.

So I would recommend trying this GR3 newest version. As Marcus said it is a good software and the newer must be better than the old one.

Its really no different form a Pod - in the case of the pod, the laptop hardware is replaced by the hardware of the pos itslef - its all software these days!

I think GR3 is great, and comparable to the pod (which also has a software plugin called Gearbox) - they are both great if you like software modelers.

If you buy line6 toneport device, it comes with a similar simulations software(gearbox).I understand that with guitar rig 3 you get some kind of interface to plug your guitar in..If you don't get that version you will need some kind of interface to get the good signal into your PC..

I tried guitar rig 2 , I'm sure guitar rig 3 is much better software...Would like to hear from someone who can compare it to gearbox software (is it worth it).. wink.gif

yeah that piece of hardware allows you to transfer signal of your guitar to PC using USB I think wink.gif Without it would not be very useful.I think line 6 toneport is almost the same thing so do a research before buy wink.gif

By coincidence I've just received this link from IK Multimedia about their new 'Stomp IO'. Not cheap though at 799Euros.

Cheers,

have to say, i was very suprised by it... and to me it sounds better than a pod... - would never use it on a serious studio album though - amps are more real

In what way do you connect your guitar to your computer for using guitar rig? Via usb or directly into the soundcard?
