GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Student/teacher Audio Collab.

Posted by: Patrik Berg Sep 3 2013, 03:52 AM

Hi everyone,

I thought it might be fun to do a student audio collaboration (teachers are invited to participate too) with this track I recorded this morning. It's in the key of B minor and is 166bpm. It's got a fairly laid back beat but you could anything with it really.
I will set the deadline for 28th September so there is plenty of time to come up with something.
Looking forward to hearing from any of you smile.gif

PS: you should be able to download the track from sound cloud.

Thank you Monica, I look forward to hearing a take from you. you're solo in menthalwhore collab inspired this track a bit actually. I could hear some very melodic soloing to this as I wrote it.

I'm really glad that my solo inspire you a little bit for your track smile.gif It's a honor for me to hear that from a player like you.
Unfortunately, this morning I recived 2 message and aparently for 2 people my solo inspire them to use words from bad slang urban dictionary. I really love your backing and last night I was have an idea for a solo over it. But today I realised that some people judge me comparing my beginner style of playing with yours high level playing. I'm not a good image at this moment for peoples from collab. So, I decide to take a break and do not participate in collab for a while. Or at least this is what I think right now.

I think that this is far from being a good idea smile.gif You should participate in as many collabs as possible, because that is one of the ways in which you can get better and better! Remember, any neck of the woods has its weeds smile.gif Not everyone is cool and supporting, but that is NO REASON for you to stop! I think you should go for this collab - you know in Japan, you would dishonor Patrick if you wouldn't accept participating in a collab he made because your work inspired him wink.gif

Monica....in this particular situation You have to forget that You are a woman...I mean You have to limit Your natural emotional relation to sucha comments. Do You have any idea how many times I was offended by some fans of a guys who play:

1. Nothing new
2. Not even precise
3. Not in tune
4. Nothing fancy - copying good old stuff...I mean...doing covers point to point

Fans of people at the level which I usually teach - not learn from smile.gif and suddently I became an object of judgement by some YT trolls biggrin.gif

Because - They can write their opinion with no responsibility...also usually no expirience supporting their judgment etc.

Make yourself an absolue chill on this smile.gif Look under the videos of guys like Buddy Guy, Clapton, Beck....some silly kids write things like

"My school friend plays better than him"
"Why is that guy famous? Jason Becker could eat him alive"

etc...

This is just a lack of knowlege and they will understand someday and think "man how stupid I was when I was a kid, I didn't understand so many things".

Remember also that word "kid" could have additional meaning - "guitar kid". I mean a player who is a grown-up but a kid in sense of thinking about guitar and overall music knowlege.

Of course...there is also a bunch of regular bastards who lives only because they can write something "wise" under Your vid smile.gif

Soo...we all get some of those and it's always this way - especially when Your a "phrasing-type" of player smile.gif You won't win with this smile.gif

Make yourself a drink, sit down on the chair, granb You guitar and enjoy Your life! smile.gif That's all smile.gif

I agree with you Cosmin, hearing other people play their ideas over a backing track is a very good way to understanding that person and it can only make you a better player by trying different styles.

Monica, ignore the trolls, because that's what they are, trolls smile.gif you have the whole of GMC supporting you, don't let anyone's words get you down! All of the haters write that because either they feel jealous and they want to make themselves feel good, or they don't have anything else to do (i.e. they don't really have a life and they spend their days on youtube entertaining themselves by posting hate everywhere). Everyone has haters! I just delete hate messages laugh.gif or sometimes I reply back to them "Happy Birthday!" laugh.gif just a random thing I do tongue.gif

I'm not a teacher at all, but I'm saying your take was PERFECTION because it sounded and looked perfect to me smile.gif Now don't let some strangers make you feel blue, the opinions of people you know count, haters' opinions don't smile.gif

Thank you to all of you for your support and advices. Sometimes I forget to limit my emotions smile.gif
I was not upset because those 2 guys don’t like my melodic style of solo over a metal backing. This thing doesn’t affect me. This is how I feel the music and if someone likes my work is ok if don’t like it doesn’t matter for me. The only thing that bothered me was the way they said it. Curiosity made me to look at their profiles (the PM was in my Facebook page) and see how good guitarists they are. I was surprised to see, they are only teenagers, hardcore metal listeners, not players. So, I cried for nothing…like a girl laugh.gif

Cosmin – Thank you for your advices wink.gif And BTW I’m glad that I’m not leave in Japan, because if I refuse Patrik maybe he will ask me to make Seppuku ( the Bushido way) laugh.gif

Bleez – Thank you my friend for your kind words smile.gif I can wait to hear your solo for Patrick collab. I know it will sound great!

Darek – I can’t imagine how a person can offend a musician like you. This is not fair. You can play any style of music and your channel on Youtube proves that. You should be considered the player who can satisfy all tastes. You can’t judge a person if you listened only one song which not fit Your taste. In my case until I made a final opinion about You, I listened all stuff on Your channel, including band work (there I found The Cheez- Love is blindness, far better version then original, where you was special guest). I will listen your advice and I will try to be chill and get used with such comments smile.gif

Patrik – I will try to make a decent solo for your awesome backing. By the way your backing fits for my style and you made it in my favorite scales wink.gif I will do my best to not disappoint you wink.gif

Sam – I really thank you for your support smile.gif You know, after some hours, in this moment I see the good thing in all that bad messages. I learn some new "dirty" words in English biggrin.gif Who knows after I will make about 15 solos maybe can I write a "Dirty Dictionary" biggrin.gif I replayed both guys and I said only “Thank you for watching my video”.

So guys, thanks from my heart and sorry for acted like a girl smile.gif Let’s make some cool solo for Patrik smile.gif

I'm not letting you take a break! If I decide to make a collab at some point I'm forcing you to play!

Don't let that get to you. We were all starting out somewhere and I for one thought you had some nice melodies to your solo. It's not always about speed (hell, I'm struggling with fast speed picking even though I've played for years (but not practiced properly)).

Keep at it and you'll see a lot of progress very soon. I also listened in on the chat the other day. Some good and sound advice in there. Looking forward to hearing more from you in the future!

Monica smile.gif if you are ever in doubt, think of one thing:

You are out there doing things - it is the easiest to stay behind a keyboard and do nothing. By simply doing what you like best you are soaring up in the sky, while all those trolololololollers are groveling in the mud smile.gif

I think your work is very good and since I am not the only one saying that, we all might have a point in what we are saying right? laugh.gif

Now get out there and play!

This thread has taken quite an interesting twist. It also shows the proof in the power of the GMC community to rally together for one of its own. Just another reason why I'm a proud member of GMC! smile.gif My only advice is that if you love making & playing music, don't let anyone steal that away from you through their harsh words. The love of music is a part of your soul or spirit & the only way someone can take that away from you is if you purposefully throw it away.

Hmmm... how about a collab "GMC vs. the Trolls"? I'm afraid creating backing tracks isn't my forte yet, but I do like naming them! wink.gif

Back to the original topic, I haven't seen any posts in quite a while. Patrik, this is a great bt & I have been trying to come up with some ideas. I'm assuming it's still active. unsure.gif

I love this backing and I wish more people involve in this collab. Because the main topic was a little derailed because of me I want to make a campain for Patrik collab.

So, until now people who made confirmation are : Blister, Bleez and of course me smile.gif

Somebody else for Patrik collab almost ready with the take? smile.gif Please guys smile.gif

Hey everyone, sorry I haven't been here lately, it's the end of the school term here and my work has been hectic to say the least. This collab is still active so if you have something recorded then send me a link to your sound cloud or what ever you use with your take both with and without the backing would be great. Thanks for your interest and sorry again for not being very active here.

Ok it sounds real nice,

But now we can put an improvisation on it and where do we drop it then?

I also would like to go with this and learn to improvise.

Thanks already

If you go to the first page of this thread, there's a download link to the backing track. Basically, what you do is you download it, record your original guitar part over it, and post it on this thread. Just make sure you post two versions; one with the backing track and one without. You can post them up on Soundcloud and enable downloads, that's how I do it smile.gif

Hey tflava,
as Taka said you can download the link on the first page of this thread, then use the file with some recording software and solo over the top of it, upload it to soundcloud or some similar site and post your links in here, one with the backing and one with just the guitar.

Thanks mate - will try to come up with something this weekend smile.gif That track is so good, I wanted to ask you if it would be ok to use it for a nice cause, but unfortunately my time is my enemy and I don't think it's a doable project on such a short notice.

As you may've heard - in my country there is a huge turmoil because of the cyanide gold mining scandal and from the beginning of this month, there are tens of thousands rallying on the streets each night to protest against the law that would allow this project to destroy a beautiful region of Romania, by a gold mining company. About 4 mountains would be destroyed out of greed and political machinations... I wanted to bring my support to the cause against the project by convincing all my guitarist friends here in Romania, to lay down a little lead part and we could share it as the Romanian Guitar Power against the Rosia Montana cyanide mining smile.gif That was my plan and I wanted to ask if you would agree to let us use the track.

Thanks, Darius. I had packed my favorite guitar away as I'm visiting the girlfriend for the next few days and brought it with me, so I was playing on my strat. It wasn't as adventureous a take as yours, but you got me inspired. Maybe I'll have a second go at it tomorrow.

Hey Sam - yes, you won biggrin.gif I will place mine tomorrow, but in the mean time, after listening to your take, I wanted to suggest that you should focus a bit more on the bends as they are a little under the pitch sometimes. And also, the timing seems unsure - if you want you could re-do it, but it's good to keep an eye out on things in the future in what concerns this wink.gif

I also posted cause I was hoping to get some help. I promise I really tried to get the tuning right. My guitar has been setup. I used a chromatic tuner & not my amp modeler tuner. I even re-tuned multiple times after every few takes (I did a lot of takes!). I tuned at open, 5th fret & 12th. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? unsure.gif

Thank you everyone for making this a great collaboration, I love listening to each of your solos and the way you express your voices through your guitar to more or less reveal a bit of yourselves to my backing track. I added the solos in the same order that you gave the files to me (I know that's a bit lazy of me). I hope you enjoy.

Pat - learn to play the guitar would ya.

bleez - great solo mate, some very good ideas in there in particular your phrasing, pretty good guitar tone, personally I would have given it a bit more mids but that is a small issue to what is essentially a very good recording. Thank you for joining.

Darius - nothing to say here really other than thank you for a beautiful solo. Thank you.

Taka - wonderful rhythmic playing, great tone and some very nice phrasing in there. Thank you.

Cael - that is a seriously warm guitar tone, in fact it was so warm I had to boost some mid highs, I hope you don't mind. Great solo, very nice phrasing and melodies. Thanks for being a part of the collab.

Monica - great solo Monica, very nice note choices again and the tone is just great. Thank you

Sam - very nice little solo there sam, some very cool melodic ideas, don't be afraid of mids though, I love a scooped sound for rhythm but a solo needs mids to cut the mix. Thanks for being a part of the collab.

Ulrik - nice sliding melodies in the solo and a good guitar tone but if I'm not mistaken you are using old strings on your guitar which can cause intonations to go out and a very "wavy" sound. I added chorus, phase, reverb and delay to your sound. Thanks for your participation in the collab.

Blister - very chilled solo, you showed great restraint and your note choices were spot on. I had to boost the signal quite significantly but made very few other changes. Thank you for your take.

Cosmin - thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule and adding your solo. Great volume swells and those bends were very tasty indeed. Thanks again

I hope you will don't stop here and I hardly wait to hear a new backing from you for another collab. I will be on the list smile.gif

Hey Pat! Thank you for having man - tho I have the same suggestion as Monica's wink.gif My take was thought so that it would fit that particular section of the backing. Now, I know that it's hard to put all those together and keep each one in the part where it was originally meant to be, so I understand what's happening wink.gif The backing is killer and I loved to play along with it!

I apologise to any others that I have messed up too, I will leave this one up though until I sort it out.

It sounds really cool smile.gif Good idea to leave the mix until You fix a few solos placement in the song smile.gif Awesome collab Patrik!

Sorry to those affected by my misalignments, I've removed the previous link and corrected the backing track to the best of my ability, I should have asked everyone to start with the drums as the backing track has a very slow phaser effect which is hard to line up with itself but as I said, this is done to the best of my ability now and if there are any further misalignments then please let me know and I will see if there is anything I can do. I hope this hasn't scared anyone away from any further collaborations I might start. smile.gif

Now it's perfect, everything it's fit with backing smile.gif My solo and Cosmin solo are in the right place smile.gif Thank you so much Patrik for this thing.
Don't worry, you not scared me and surely I will not miss any collab made by you with this kind of backing wink.gif It's fit perfect for my style smile.gif
I liked to be part of this collab. All solos are really great smile.gif Thank you Patrik and I wait another backing from you wink.gif

Thanks for doing the collab, Patrik, it was a great backing track, and I took the advice and adjusted my mids a bit in my tone and think I got an even better tone now. So thanks smile.gif

I could definitely hear an improvement from previous collabs in the different takes, so I'd say everyone has moved in the right direction!

Blister - very chilled solo, you showed great restraint and your note choices were spot on. I had to boost the signal quite significantly but made very few other changes. Thank you for your take.

I believe this is my third attempt at jumping into the GMC collab arena. Thank you so much for your kind comments. smile.gif Regarding the need to "boost my signal", is there something I can adjust when recording to make a stronger signal?

I must agree with everyone else on how great this collab turned out. I am very pleased to be involved in it. I, too, am looking forward to your next collab! smile.gif

Hey Gary! What are you using to record? To increase the signal, you should turn the interface guitar input channel gain up, but be careful not to overdo it or the signal can become distorted.

Thank you to everyone that participated and thank you for your kind words, I think your solos were all outstanding.

Guitar -> Line 6 UX1 Interface -> Reaper w/Overloud TH1 Amp Modeler Plugin

I went back to my Reaper project & noticed I could/should have increased the Output level in the TH1 plugin. Also, would increasing the Reaper Track level & Master level helped any? The "Output" control on the interface seems only to control the volume. I really appreciate the help! smile.gif

I've never used a line 6 UX1 interface, is there a channel volume/gain? If so then make sure you have that turned up enough that when you see the meters in reaper starting to peak with the reaper sliders set to 0db then you are getting a strong signal. Once I have rendered my tracks I then open a new project in my DAW and drag the new track to it and then boost the whole thing with a peak limiter to get the volumes up to near CD volume. I'm probably not the best person to talk to about this as I'm quite new to it all too but why not send a PM to Todd, he is a guru when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Hey again Gary - glad you spotted the troublemaker smile.gif Indeed, when it comes down to digitized stuff - Todd is the man to go to. I am an analog guy and I am mainly using my ears to get my tones.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Oct 12 2013, 03:44 AM

Todd here ;0) You can increase the input gain on your interface or you can increase the output gain on TH2 or you can do both smile.gif:

Be aware of how "hot" you are making the signal. If you push it too hard, you will see the meter stick in the red line on reaper. And you will get too much noise sad.gif

Todd

Aye - Red, usually means 'turn it down a bit, will ya?' smile.gif Kidding aside, I was helping a bass player friend with some recording last evening and we had a lot of trouble from the input coming out of a Hellborg bass preamp. There was a weird almost imperceptible noise on the recording. We tried everything - using different cables, another bass, using a different input on the interface. It was still there... any clues? smile.gif

Thanks Todd, Cosmin & Patrik. Silly me! mellow.gif I should have known better. I guess I just haven't paid close enough attention to the output meter.

I was just worried more about getting the notes right! biggrin.gif

No worries mate - you could work on a recording routine for the future:

- set everything in place
- make tests for the audio recording quality
- practice a few times with the Red light on and forget about it then
- leave it on and start playing and then after having 4-5 takes - select the one which is the best
- after that listen to it and see what you would like to perfect smile.gif
- re-record knowing exactly how your take should sound
- be careful to export the tracks with the exact settings

This is how I see it - how do you do it, mate?

Sorry for the delay, I've been reading the forum but just didn't have the time to write anything. I always take to long in writing (I think way too much on what I'm writing). mad.gif

This is how I am recording now. I use Pod Farm & Overloud TH1 modeling software for my tones. What I didn't realize was that when I modify the amps & effects in the modeling software, my output level was being changed stronger or weaker (mostly weaker) & I overlooked adjusting it. sad.gif

Well, now that you have spotted the issue, you can take care of not letting it meddle in your recordings again wink.gif There's another collab started by Patrick that you can jump in if you wish: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=50346
