I just had a very inspiring chat session where we discussed how to develop creativity - among other things.

My thesis is that creativity can be practiced just like anything else, but it is not [necessarily] done with a metronome.

To be more concise, one of the things we have discussed is to dare question and drop old habits and patterns. Also we talked about how you must regularly expose yourself to new sensations and situations in life, find new solutions to old problems - and never be afraid to revise old perceptions.

To make a long story short - Alisson da Silva told me he had been offered to take part of a recording session in another town. But he felt shy about attending it.

I asked him what was his biggest fear, and he told us he was afraid of making a fool out of himself, playing a mistake etc.

Collectively, we concluded that was one of the better things that could happen. The worst thing that could happen is that he keeps missing chances in life, stagnates, and eventually ends up old and frustrated.

Do you think Alisson will attend the session? My advice to him is do it or regret it!

I totally agree smile.gif If you keep thinking you aren't good enough YET, you will eventually do this to yourself for the rest of your life and miss out on amazing opportunities.

Alisson should definitely go take a chance but prepare himself thoroughly beforehand as well as possible:

- find out what he has to play
- understanding what he has to play
- prepare the piece by playing it slow
- have his gear ready for recording

These are just some thoughts, but I am sure that everyone here can come up with great suggestions!

I would say there are two important things to bear in mind in that kind of situation:

- We can always find a reason NOT to do something. It will always be a bit scary doing something that is new to us. No matter who you are. So, with that in mind, just make yourself do it even though you're nervous and thinking of worst case scenarios. When our mind conjures up worst case scenarios, it's just the brain's way of protecting ourselves and stopping us from doing anything new. It's an old survival mechanism that just doesn't know when to turn off ! When we know this, we can ignore it.

-However, the knowledge that we should throw ourselves into opportunities is not a substitute for preparation. So, at least do your best to prepare yourself for a particular situation. Then you can let go of the outcome in the knowledge that you've done all you could. If it goes well, great. If it's not that great, no harm done. More experience gained smile.gif

I think if we're all honest, most of the times in life when we worried about a situation, the anticipation of the situation was always worse than the situation turned out to be.

If you're not failing you're not trying. There are always risks and the fear of failure is the one thing that will keep someone stagnant.

If you're striving and failing, you will eventually succeed - at least you got game. There will always be people right there reveling in your failure, because if you succeed it proves you have put in the effort to surpass them.

Here's a great page about failure/success.

Can't agree more with this posts. We use many tricks to post pone the things that we want to do but that takes us our of the comfort zone. We use to thing that it's to risky and sometimes we even use to have the commonly called "false optimism" that means that we say: I'm ok like now, I don't need to do that thing...

Prepare yourself the best you can and go for it. There is no way to fail, the worse scenario is knowing new people, a new studio and gaining experience.

Yeah I think Allison, and no one else, should be the judge of failure vs success.

Fingers crossed he will see it as a huge success if he he does it, regardless of the outcome.

In my book, doers are always the winners, in the long run.
