GMC Forum _ Gabriel Leopardi _ Power Metal Solo Collab
Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 11 2012, 11:38 PM
Hello guys!! Welcome to my new Collab. This backing has been inspired in my latest Power Metal lesson in which I covered the style of Helloween. You won't find this progression in the lesson because I recorded the backing specially for this collab.
This is the lesson that I'm talking about: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/German-Power-Metal-Helloween/
The chord progression is Em - D - G - C.
Tempo: 150 BPM
The scales that you can use over this backing are E Pentatonic Minor and E Minor.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
The deadline is January 31 so you have 20 days to record a cool solo or an harmonized melody (like the original lesson).

Going to try and fit one of those "special" tapping patterns into the solo, hope it'll work
Oh and by the way - is it a video collab or just audio?
oh! that's cool man!!! I really liked the tapping exercises that you shared with me so it will be a pleasure to see those ideas in action! This is an audio collab! Thanks for joining!

Hey mate! Thanks for joining! Your solo sounds good. I like the first two ideas, a repetive melody and then some Weikath style bending licks. However I feel that these same ideas could be much better with some more work. Try to add more varied rythms to your soloing ‘cause it starts to sound monotone after some licks. Also you could add some harmonisations in thirds as well as some palm muting ideas.
Here I recorded a sample of te first licks based on your ideas but applying the ideas that I said.

Technically everything sounds good but I think that you should add stronger vibrato to your playing. I like your tone, it fits perfectly with the backing.
Superize (00:30 to 00:59)
Hi mate! Thanks for your take!! I think that your take is perfect man! It combines all the elements that a good power metal solo should have... some harmonized melodies, some shredding, some melodies, long and short notes, rocker licks... Hansen, Weikath and our friend Marcus Siepen would be proud of you! Well done!
Your technique is perfect in this take, I have only good comments about it. I like your tone’s sustain but maybe you could add a bit more treble to make it sound a bit brighter.
Todd (00:59 to 01:29)
Hi friend! As I said, it’s a honour to have you here in this collab. I really enjoyed your take. Your technique is awesome and the solo has a great balance between melody and shredding. This combination of fast notes and more melodic ones and the perfection of your right hand as well as your vibrato and bending puts this take at the level of the best power metal guitar players. You tone is really good and the only comments that I have about it is that I feel that it has too much fx (at least for my taste). Congrats and thanks again my friend!

Thanks for the feedback Gabriel, and thanks a lot for the example you recorded. I'll use that for my next solo

Thanks I used it in my lesson and improved a bit over it to illustrate the licks in question. Without realizing I sort of jumped in to crazy speed land pulled by backing. It's really a spiff backing and makes you want to just rip. Nice writing there!
hmm. Now I"m thinking, what if we did a instructor collab/collab where you and I wrote the backing or series of riffs, and then did a collab based on it?
Here is a bit that I was thinking would make a start for a cool collab. What if we switched between a few different rythms that were vastly different?

: 110Hey Todd! Those riffs are awesome!! I have been jamming and the ideas sound so cool! I love the idea! Let's do it!
How would you like to proceed? Maybe you could send me the drum midi files, and an audio with your riffs... and then I can create my first and send my audio to let you mix the final backing track... then we can start the collabs thread... what do you have in mind?

Thanks for the kind feedback and for making yet another KILLER Collab! Your Collabs always RAWK man! Just great stuff to work with. Congrats to everyone!
I think you are right on the money about the fx on my take, it's got too much "wet" and needs more "dry" to help the notes/picking stand out a bit. Good ear!
