Hi all,


I own for now several weeks a EBMM JP6 equipped with the DiMarzio Combo Air Norton for Neck and D-Sonic for Bridge.

Overall that sound great but regarding the Dsonic, I find it too harsh and with too much trebble especially at high volume. King of good for riffing but for lead tone it is way too harsh and trebbled and lacks of warmth.

I am potentially alike to wire a Crunch Lab / Liquifire combo instead but I would like to know if some of view have experienced the same and if the Crunch Lab could be better ?

I'm afraid I have no experiance of the pickup your talking about.

I don't know you budget either.

But if your looking for a high end pickup IMO bareknuckle are the best there are, great sound and a fantastic group of guys.

On a cheaper tip Toneriders are the best bang for buck pickup. They sound absolutly great and you can replace all 3 in a strat for a little over £60.

What kind of budget do you have?
As Stratman says (and Zakk will endorse this) you can't really go wrong with Bareknuckle. Also, if you get in touch with them they're really helpful and will probably be able to suggest the best pairing, or replacement for the D-Sonic!
It might also be worth getting in touch with Stan Hinesley as he will help you decide what you want and custom wind it to your specs!
Personally, I'd suggest just replacing the D-Sonic. If you're happy with the Air Norton why change it?

Well John Petrucci played the D-Sonic/Air Norton combo for years...
I don't think his signature pickups will be very diffrent from them, more like a variation of the D-Sonic and Air Norton. If you have Music Man guitars and you want to put the LiquiFire/CrunchLab in a Musicman I think it's the best to go to a store and try one of the newer John Petrucci Signature Music Mans which are already equipped with the new pickups! That should give you an impression!

If you also don't like the Crunchlab then we can still advise you for something else...

Yes Petrucci playes Dsonic for years but when you look to allt he gear he has behind it is really hard to tell whether the stock one with our gear will give the same results.
I just need a Dsonic with a little less trebble, and the crunch lab is said to be warmer in the high end with less trebble and mids.

I want to stay on the Dimarzio Crunchlab or Dsonic to keep the JP6 spirit.

For the Air Norton it remains a little muddy event if it is correct and I heard a lots of good stuff on the Liquifire.

For the idea of trying one with a crunch lab equipped, the problem is that none are available for trying right now in Paris store.


Anyone knows when exactly the JP6 with crunch lab appeared ?

I suggest you try the Crunchlab. Who knows how it will behave in your guitar? It's not that expensive and you can always switch the pickup, it's a fairly ease "adventure".

Yes you are right, and I ordered them ! I will still be able to switch back

And if petrucci went for those instead of the dsonic air norton I suppose they should sound great

Ok guys, I had my new pups installed and set yesterday so just a fast review:

Neck: Liquifire / the best neck pickup I could try, very precise, not at all muddy, love of god style of sound, incredible. The attack is very precise and define, woaw

Bridge: Crunch Lab / Here we have a very precise humbucker, nothning will hide a bad technique, clean, warm tone, thick bass, really all I wanted. I just have to get used to this precision and adapt my playing differently but wow

Really I have no regret at all (and if someday I have some, I still have my older pups to put them back in lol)
