they are pritty awsome.. they get alot of bad rep because they get drunk on stage and performance gets a little sloppy but other than that i think they are pritty awsome... i saw them live at the docks concert hall in Toronto and they put on a wicked show!

any band that plays well live "only when they feel like it" is not worth my time. alcohol and music dont mix, its disrespectful to the fans who pay to see you.

this is all true. but their music is good. maybe we should
have a dragonforce lesson

I used to like them, but soon enough I realized all they songs were the same. Cry for eternity/Though the fire and flames/Operation ground and pound. All the same.

Also, they are not such great guitarists and overuse some effects...

LMAO! I know. I love how ((sarcasm)) in Guitar Hero when you are playing their song the pac-man noises are played with a difficult sequence of notes (if playing on a high difficulty) when all Herman does is take his wammy bar and run it down the strings.

people bash DF way to much. Be honest, how many of you like Through the Fire and The Flames? I guarantee a lot of you do. Also they're not the only band to drink alcohol so thats a lame thing to judge them on. They put on good shows and make good songs. Give them some credit.

We arent all bashing them to a full extent we are just kidding around.

They are pretty good its just they have their weaknesses.

That's the reason Ritchie Blackmore is playing folk rock now. He said that no matter what he played, the people would like it because they were all drunk.

Here, do it the quick way. Take your stereo, insert Dream Theater's Train Of Thought album. Hook it up to your recorder somehow and play Stream Of Conciousness through the recorder. Finally Rename it "I just owned Petrucci at his own song" and you will be warshipped!

i still seriously blaime alchohol for the bad stage sound.. the songs everyone rips on are through fire and flames and valley of the damed which are the songs they play last during their shows.. at the beginning everything sounds wicked.. they slowly drink during the show and it gets progressively worse....i think they are all awsome players.. studio albums sound awsome.. but i recommend everyone has 4 to 7 beers and then tries to sweep smile.gif

Oh and DRAGONFORCE ROCKS

Posted by: shellshock1911 Mar 7 2008, 03:03 AM

They are a good band and make pretty good music. However I think they are extremely overrated. If I remember correctly, the vast majority of Through the Fire and Flames solo is just in standard sets of 4, 4 sets per bar, every bar. Extremely simple solo technically and if you can play 16th notes at 170 BPM or so, the solo isn't that difficult. Dream Theater solos are unbelievably harder though, just try to learn the Constant Motion solo, Metropolis Part 1 solo, The Glass Prison solo among many others to see what a hard solo really is. Hell I think I remember one Dream Theater solo where the time signature changes from 6/8 to 7/8 on every bar. And the scary part is, every member of Dream Theater pulls every song off live, note for note, a feat which I have yet to see Dragonforce even come close to accomplishing. They saturate everything so much with effects it just becomes stupid after a while.

Posted by: The Uncreator Mar 7 2008, 03:08 AM

Comparing Dream Theater to Dragonforce isnt a good idea to me.

I give tons of credit to Dragonforce for being able to write fast, super melodic solos, and being able to play them (Sober, atleast), But its not as "Technical" as DT, Its basic structure, basic arpeggios, tapping licks, just fast usually, Dream Theater, Like you said, can even be a simpler solo or more difficult, and it will change tempo and time signature randomly and more than once.

2 bands that are too different really.

Yea I like Dragonforce, all their songs are very uplifting to me (in the studio). The reason I compared to DT though was because I was just pointing out that there are bands out there that are able to pull their own music off live, whereas usually Dragonforce makes like 200 mistakes. I saw one video where Herman Li accidentally hit the volume control pedal instead of wah, so like 4 seconds of the solo was just cut off completely, then he accidentally hits the whammy pedal making the part of the solo that he could play sound 2 octaves higher, overall complete mess, especially when followed by always drunk Totman.

Posted by: The Uncreator Mar 7 2008, 03:22 AM

True, DT are flawless live.

Posted by: Goliath Mar 7 2008, 04:05 AM

yeah, if you catch DF RIGHT after a studio release, they're going to play sloppy because they're still learning the song. I've seen DF twice and the second time they nailed each song note for note (it was in february of last year on the No Fear tour or something). The first time I saw them was on the off day from Ozzfest 2 years ago. They flubbed it a little, but not near as bad as the videos. I'm sure lots of skilled guitarists have made mistakes on video before. Petrucci is clearly better than Sam or Herman. Petrucci is probably one of the best rock guitarists alive. That said DF isn't bad. Their stage presence IMHO is better than DT's. They're really high energy and lots of fun.

Yeah, Petrucci has absolutely no stage presence, he pretty much just stands there. Portney is good, but He's stuck on drums the entire time. Dream Theater is of course better technically than Dragonforce though.

Fixed tongue.gif

Just kidding. Definately though, if I wasn't so astounded in awe and addicted to Dream Theater I would definately find Dragonforce much funner due to the atmosphere. Dream Theater shows are pretty much 100% music, which is how they want it to be, and how it should be, nothing wrong with that. However I can definately see why one would want to go see DF, having never heard of them, just because it is always fun to go to a rock concert.

Posted by: Goliath Mar 7 2008, 04:14 AM

When Petrucci starts doing tornado jumps off cabs/drum riser/ monitors or when they get trampolines on the side of the stage and haul up girls from the crowd then we'll talk. The energy DF puts into their concert is truly unrivaled by any band I've seen. I've not seen DT live yet, I'm going in May, but I have watched LOTS of DT live performances.

On another note, Could you imagine being the singer for DT. It'd be really bad at live shows whenever the rest of the band was just jamming, which they do ALOT. He actually leaves the stage, because they go on for so long. Which is awesome of course.

Reminds me of the Motley Crue concert I saw lol. Lets just say they almost got arrested and stopped halfway through due to unbelievably horrible conduct. After that I never wanted to go to another one like, Def Leppard and Van Halen were way better.

Dragonforce sound good in studio because they record everything at 50% tempo and then double the tempo to give the finished album. That's also why they get drunk live to try and cover up the fact they are very sketchy playing the stuff. They should get credit for writing catchy songs and melodies but they shouldn't for their guitar PLAYING skills.
