Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: 80's Pop Rock Solo by Guido Bungenstock

Time to fess up - I just fall in love with everything that Guido plays! Love this tune - maybe it's my age.. or maybe it's Guido's great music, phrasing, note choices and killer vibrato... I've set myself a mission to work through all of his lessons and this is the first. Level 4 - yes, easy to play - well I suppose the notes are but that's not the point.. Devil's in the detail as always.. Hope it's not too painful on the ears.. Si

Hi Grappa! Nice job on this killer tune by Guido!

Yes, his phrasing is very expressive thanks to a tasty combination of elements like vibrato, dynamics, articulation, and note choices. I've seen your take many times and I think that you are doing it very well. However, there is more room into those elements to make your playing sounds better.

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to your take is that there are some tuning issues in the higher strings. I wonder if this is related to old strings, bad calibration or just tuning. Check it out.

Then, about your playing here are some things to have in mind:

- Your vibrato can be more consistent. Sometimes the vibration is irregular, it's not natural, other times it's week or it starts too soon. Compare each one with the original lesson and write down your conclusions.

- Your bending is not precise. This can be related to the tuning issue, but you don't reach the pitch smoothly.

- The staccato notes in the riff and also in the solo can sound tighter, and more "staccato" byt muting with your palm and making them shorter. I also think that you tend to play the softer making your playing sound with less dynamics.

Those are the things that come to mind at this moment. Keep on working!

Just as with Guido's playing - this is a highly musical take. I like it!

I can hear you stumble sometimes (ie 00:26) and the techniques Gab mentioned can of course always be improved.

All in all a very enjoyable take with great tone! Looking forward to your coming ones.

Hey there!

I guess it's both - great playing of Guido's and your age to be grown up to appreciate it smile.gif

Guido's stuff is not an easy one to learn because of details. I generally like your tone and there are no critical mistakes here but there is still some magic missing. efore focusing on the magic itself, it's worth to review your vibrato and bending technique. The both have a kind of pitch issues. Bend's don't reach perfect pitch and vibrato has irregular depth with each "push and pull".

Try to make the vibrato downwards only, and let the string go back to it's natural pitch while you release the pressure. This way you make sure your vibrato always crosses the poiunt of perfect pitch. At this moment it sounds like a vibration of slightly bent note.
