Bad news. My Dual Recto died this week. It made a couple of very load pops and belew the fuse. I replaced the fuse and it did it again. Of course it went over 5 years old this year on a five year warranty ;-). I will be taking it in next week to get it fixed but I am considering buying a Stiletto Ace combo as a second amp. I have read all the reviews and it seems to be a great amp.

Anyone on the boards own one? I love my Recto for metal but I am looking for something with a little more tone for the crunch type settings, and a little less power.

Mike

Best mesa out for the money right now (inmho) It's really great and is LOUD for it's watts. I like recto's but I've found that I often prefer mid-gain amplifiers for metal like the stiletto or an Orange AD30HTC with a big muff (me favorite amp in the world). Also It's a massive amplifier! It's really big which I was surprised to see when I played it. Play em' all, but you know that already wink.gif
Good Luck

Wow, nice gear. I had a Dual Rectifier a few years back. Should never have sold it. Just out of curiosity, have you ever re-tubed your Rectifier amp in the five years you owned it? I'm blowing fuses in my TSL, and I'm sure it's one or more of the EL34s gone bad.
The tone of a tube amp tends to degrade over time as the power tubes become more worn. If you've never changed your 6L6s, you'll be suprised how good it sounds after getting it back from the shop.
As far as the Stilleto Ace is concerned, all the reviews I've read say it's a great amp. Mesa makes great stuff. I'd definitely run it through its' paces before buying though, just to be sure it's the sound you're looking for. Go to the Mesa website and click on the review link. Everybody raves about the Ace. smile.gif

Constantly blowing fuses could in best case be = bad tubes.

I had one for about a week and brought it back. The combo is nice and it sounds good but it's not a harder rock and roll machine. And for the price I just couldn't keep it if it wouldn't do everything I wanted. It's still in the Music store to this day and it's been there for almost two years now.

However, as EL34 tube amps go I wasn't overly impressed. At least not considering the mighty price tag. If your used to the gain of a Dual Rec. you'll probably be a bit disappointed.

Your Rec just needs to be retubed. I don't know this as fact but considering your amps age and other details you listed I'd bet that's the case.

Mesa's are fixed biased so changing tubes is as simple as getting replacements and sticking them in. Mesa's web site has all the info. http://www.mesaboogie.com/index.html

Don't think because I'm a die-hard Marshall lover that I'm downing their amps. I'm not, their Road King head and their Triaxis preamp are amazing. I just prefer that heavy midrange Brit overdriven tone. As American amps go there is no equal in build quality.

IMO there are just better EL34 driven amps out there for the amount of money a Stiletto Ace will run you. However, take one for a test drive because it's all a personal taste thing anyhow.

Heck, trade in your Dual Rec. and take the money you were thinking of spending on the Ace and upgrade to a Road King. Then you'll have EL34 and 6L6 tones. Best of both worlds in one amp. tongue.gif

Cheers,
tommboy

I respect everyones' opinion, but I am more inclined to lean towards what the industry pros have to say. These guys run every amp on the planet through its' paces. They're usually killer guitar players and they know what they're talking about. Check out these reviews. I'd buy the thing without even trying it out based on these reviews. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the advice on re-tubing my Dual Recto and I will do exactly that. But, let's face it, the dual recto is good for one thing - balls to the wall metal. I play a lot of metal but I also play a lot of other styles, especially at my church where I play a lot of contemporary Christian music using just a line6 Pod X3 Live with direct out to the PA.

So, I bought the Stiletto Ace 50 watt Head today since I can use it at church as well as any other playing that I do. Mesa Boogie has them marked down $300. You can't get the Recto sound but you can get it to sound like a Marshall as well as great clean and crunch sounds. I am running my Line6 into the clean channel to get any modeling sound I want - including Dual Recto. This amp is probably the best all around amp you can buy if you need a variety of sounds. If you only play shred then you don't need flexibility, you just need to find your own tone. I really like the fact that it is only 50 watts since I can actually drive the amp into the sweet spot without blowing my eardrums. This is one loud amp though and could handle any situation that I can envision.

The combo was so big I decided to get the head and use it at home or clubs with my 4 x 12 cab and buy a 2 x 12 to leave parked at Church. That way I only have to haul the head back and forth each week. It is easier to move than a big combo.

Tommyboy - I am wondering if you had the 1st generation Stiletto. The Stage IIs have been completely revoiced and sound very much like a Marshall on the high gain settings. In any case I am satisfied after playing it for about 6 hours straight today. The slightly overdriven clean channel sounded so good I remembered how to play some old Tom Petty songs I haven't played in years...Breakdown, Refugee, etc.
