I just found out about these guys:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/VSJunior/  There is also a head version. Its about as simple as a valve amp can get, no tone stack, 2 preamp stages (12ax7) and a single EL84 power tube. Its actually very similar in design to the one I am building but a lot simpler. It makes about 5W which is good for practicing and recording and allegedly sounds good. I ordered one just for fun - there are lots of mods out there for it as well and it is as cheap as dirt - $150, so how can you lose
