Hi Guys I'm working on cleaning up my tone while adding some delay and reverb. How does this guitar tone sound against the backing and is the effects overused?
It's kind of like tasting soup a thousand times....there aren't any taste buds left so maybe youll have a bite and let me know how I'm doing. Thanks! https://soundcloud.com/jim-seekford-music/i-rig-tone-test |

Hi Jim! Nice playing on this audio. I also like the tone, it's cool. I notice that it becomes a bit unclear when you reach the lower strings. This means that I would adjust a bit the EQ to get a better balance between low and high strings. Besides this, I also agree with Cosmin about the effect, I think that it's too high so it also generates problems in the bass frequencies. I would try setting it softer and it it's possible cutting the bass frequencies of it (sometimes is possible to EQ reverb).
To give you a reference, I think that the guitar tones on this album are close to your style and have the balanced EQ that I'm talking about. -------------------- My lessons

I agree with Cosmin.
Lower the effects send and try placing the reverb on one side and the delay on the other side. I like the tone in general. I tend to favor darker. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

Ok Guys Thanks for the feedback. I have taken your advice and believe I have corrected them a little. Here's a fun version of that same backing track. https://soundcloud.com/jim-seekford-music/i-rig-update
This was the first time I took a good look at my eq so let me know if I am lacking anywhere. Thanks! |

Thanks! Much better man It has that subtle something, which emanates good taste in tone, to me Not too much and not too little! It's always a matter of creating balance and always a matter of being able to express the tone's natural qualities in your playing. That, in my opinion means having an organic tone which responds to your commands live, while playing, so it can sound more aggressive or more mellow. That can be obtained only if the effects are subtle enough not to drown it. I think you are on the right path, man! |

Much better overall sound wise.
*I would actually lower the volume of the lead guitar just a hair. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

Thanks! Hi Jim! I think that your tone improved a lot, now you added the perfect amount of effect for my taste. It sounds beautiful! At the same time I think that the tone has personality, it sounds unique so now it's time to continue exploring all those licks and phrases that you have inside. what are your next music plans? -------------------- My lessons

I agree with Gabriel and in order to help you a bit in putting that amazing tone to work, how about trying some lessons which are fitting?

Gabriel and Cosmin thanks! Well seeing that I love fusion guitarists and I know zero fusion licks I'd have to agree that those lesson suggestions are a good call. The second one has a little more sparkle that I'm after. I'll start right away. Take care guys Btw Gabriel Greg Howe does have a real nice tone. I'd like to have a guitar tone like that. That and some real nasty country playing tone. I absolutely love that guitar tone from guitarists like johny hiland. Well, I'm not a fusion guitarist but I love to listen to some of them like Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe, Kotzen. One of the my goals for this year was to expand my playing and reach new styles and fusion is one of them. I started working on some GMC lessons from Stephane, Jose Lassaga, and Andre Nieri, so I'm slowly introducing myself in this amazing style. I think that the trick is learning many licks from these lessons, analyze the scales and progressions used and use the backing track to practice the licks, create variations and improvise. How is your approach? -------------------- My lessons

I don't know Cosmin, I may have to change the lesson because I'm really feeling Diego's lesson. It's a 5 but I know I can do it.

Hi Jim,
I actually like the original recording. I love the presence and fatness of the tone in the first recording much more. The higher notes on the second recording tend to sound a little thin. But maybe it's my ears or playing it on different speakers what makes a difference. Tone is very subjective. You can never reach a guitar tone which pleases every listener. If it sounds good to your ears, than it's probably good. Anyway, keep on rocking! -------------------- My Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/SparrowLesPaul
