I overheard a guy today on the radio talking to a famous folk musician, stating something about starting to play the guitar at a later stage in life. Now that made me wonder if any of you guys regard this as an obstacle.. or not smile.gif as someone said in a thread the other day - the older we get the more disciplined we should be, so learning something should be easier, even if we don't have that mind numbing capacity of absorbing info, as found in a teenager for instance smile.gif

Well I started playing guitar in high school, but I didn't have any serious practice routine, and I was generally not very serious with guitar playing. I just played when I felt like it, making huge pauses between practice routines. I also didn't really tried to learn much theory or techniques, I just played over the tabs of my favorite songs biggrin.gif

I don't think age really matters. Yes, we all memorize new things much better when we are younger, but I think the progress really depends of how you handle it.

Age, while not posing a serious obstacle to people who want to learn guitar, is often used as an excuse for not *really* trying to learn it and giving in. If someone wants to learn to play guitar, with hard work he will surely succeed, but if he/she uses age as an excuse for errors and slow beginner progress (which is definitely bound to happen), it can be a problem...

i totally agree smile.gif I've heard about some dude a few years ago..He was about 28 back then and by the time he was 32 he became an internationally acclaimed classical guitarist. Well, the interesting fact is that at 28 he first picked up the guitar smile.gif

I started when I was 19, and practiced religiously for about 1 1/2 years. Then I started playing volleyball, then got married and took a 15 year hiatus. I just started playing again about 2 years ago. I have no idea how many years I've actually been playing in total, but it's somewhere around 4-6 years total?

I started playing guitar at 25, which some people consider kind of late in life. Its not so much when you start playing as it is how determined you are to learn to play. I know guys who started playing at 15-16 years old and quit as soon as it got hard and I also know guys that started in their 50's and are still rocking and sounding great. biggrin.gif Determination to play well, rather you're 15 or 54, is most important.

started playing when i was 11 classical but didnt take to it so i quit and took up piano.

started again when i was 15 with an electric had lessons from a shit teacher and didnt learn an awful lot could play a bit.

after a year of that i picked up bass and was a natural played that for about 5 years quite religiously then decided i wanted to go back to guitar about two years ago haven't put it down again since.

learning to play the bass properly def helped me with guitar took to it much better the 3rd time around! haha got myself a great tutor as well that helped!

I started playing in the early 80's as a Senior in HS. Most everything I learned in the first few years came out of an instructional book called The Heavy Guitar Bible and used that to learn songs by ear, stuff like AC/DC , Zep, Clapton,Santana etc. When I started playing in cover bands I was introduced to the modes and Blues scales in a 3 note per string fashion by a fellow guitar player that was fresh out of GIT. Then I found other interests, mainly watersports, and music took a back seat, altho I still played but not with the determination of the first 5 or so years of playing. In the last 5 years or so I have been playing again pretty religiously trying to get rid of some bad habits involving technique mainly that I had formed in the early years of playing. The only thing I can think of where age may have made a differance is maybe if I had started sooner I would have went to GIT myself or another Musicians institute rather than partying and acting like a rock star. So I would say age may have something to do with it but self discipline or lack thereof probably has more to do with how quickly one can advance and mature musically.

I started at 22 (now I am 27). A colleague of a friend taught me how to play the main theme of Batacanda (a kick ass romanian song ). It was by "accident" that I met him. Then I was thinking what the f I was doing all these years smile.gif. I started to like it more than anything else but only after an year and a half I started to practice more serious.

I made a big mistake in trying to learn almost everything by myself and wasted a lots of time. Also I might say that I had some bad luck because I studied with a "teacher" who after 6 month told me that he doesn't have anything else to teach me. And of course this got to my head overestimating my self. I woke up only when I found out about GMC and tried to do some REC's, actually that the time when I started to record myself and listen carefully.

Age matters but not that much, what is important is that no matter how late you start, you need to have a good teacher to guide you. This way you win lots of time. It is true that when you're young you learn things easier, but on the other hand, when you are more mature you are able to study more rigorously and I think it balances in a way.
Dunno, hope it's no to late for me tongue.gif

I don't like what is left of them but I think they had some pretty good songs smile.gif.
Did you calculate the inflation rate also for the price of that acoustic guitar ? smile.gif)

I started playing 6 months ago - I'm 37.

Never played any kind of instrument before this. Always considered myself too old to start.
Woke up one day and said sod it, i'm going to go for it.

I play every day, got several guitars, am completely obsessed.

Currently working my way through the chord lessons on this site. They are great. Thanks loads.

Andy.
