GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Buzzing Sound When Recording

Hi there GMC...
I just bought an ME-25 from BOSS and it is awesome. Its just that when i connect it directly to my macintosh (directly into the usb) to record using logic, there is a significant buzzing noise even when i'm not playing. And all that buzzing noise is being recorded into my computer. Its funny because the ME-25 is very quiet when i'm playing using headphones (without connecting it to the computer or amplifiers). Is this a common problem when recording with audio interfaces? Any advice and suggestions will be very appreciated..thanks in advance!

Hmm there should be no buzzing. Maybe your guitar is picking up some electric noise from the appliances (lights/monitor etc). Try moving around the room to see if buzz disappears. Also try lowering volume on the me-25 and selecting clean patch.

A guess is that you've got singlecoils and sit close enough to your computer to allow it to add noise to your pickups.

Ah, I had that (or a similar) problem with my BOSS GT-PRO. It only came when I turned recording on in DAW. It was super weird, and noone knew what it could be. Problem is, I can't remember the solution... But! Check your system settings, ground switch, various outputs. I think there was a setting I had to change on the system bar. 
edit: my problem only came when recording using drive channels.

I remember I had this problem while I used to record with my PC and DigiTech GNX4. I thought it was earthing issue as I had heard of it.
Later I found out:
1. I was recording right in front of a monitor. I had 17" CRT that was throwing an electric field.
2. Perhaps CPU too.
3. I had a UPS Battery just below the table.
4. I had a huge high tension wire just outside my window.
5. After I got rid of all this (laptop/ LCD monitors (not even used now), I still have the battery and now I use tube preamp, I still get the buzz while I face a certain angle and it goes away while I face a different angle. So, there is still some electric field resulting in the noise.
Hope that helps to know what your problem might be.

That happens to me with my POD X3 too, but only on older laptops. It was an earth issue, something to do with the computer not properly built to avoid that buzzing with musical equipment.
On my newer laptop it makes zero noise... so it wasn't the POD.
Try unplugging the laptop and see if it still makes the noise.
If the ME-25 doesn't make that noise when it's not connected through USB, it shouldn't do it when plugged to the laptop either.
There's another possible source for that noise, and it's your guitar pups near the laptop. Again, it happennes to me back when I had my old laptop that it increased the noise coming from my pups, even humbuckers. Some laptops act like a giant anthena for noise. Hard to believe, but 100% true.

yes...my ibanez does have single coil but only one...thanks for the advice!
edit: my problem only came when recording using drive channels.

yeah my ME-25 doesn't make so much noise even when i'm using hi-gain sounds...it only happens when its connected to my macbook. well i'll try to move away from the laptop...i hope i don't have to move too far do i?

hey guys! guess what? keeping in mind all your tips and advice, i finally knew what was wrong. i tried moving stuff in my room, moving the guitar away from the macbook etc. and the noise actually came from the the wire that is connected to my laptop charger. i removed it and the noise was completely gone...i should not have been charging my laptop while having my me-25 connected to it as well. So i guess problem solved! thanks again guys!

So i guess problem solved! thanks again guys!Its good to hear you solved the issue. Yeah, this happens to me sometimes when I use mic on my camcorder while the cam is plugged into the mains power via charger.
Possibly it would disappear if you would plug it in UPS device or some power conditioner. But its best to use laptops battery power when recording for noise free environment.
