GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Metal Recommendations (closed)

Posted by: The Uncreator Aug 30 2007, 03:52 AM

To all who read this, especially newer GMC members who weren't here at the birth of this thing, what follows is a list of Metal bands categorized by genre, as of now, it is still incomplete, but as you can see, the Progressive section and my personal recommendations have been updated so that when you click on the band name, you will be directed to there home page or myspace. When finished, ALL bands will have this for there names on the list, unless a link or web page cannot be found for them, and the genres will be further diversified. (Example, Death Metal will be separated into Melodic Death/ Technical Death/ Prog Death ect. ect. )

So bear with me, because separating this list is a very tiresome task, i love metal with all my heart, but i have not heard all these bands, so i must "Investigate" if you will these bands to see where they will fit. Of course, this list would not be possible without the many contributions made my our very own GMC members, too many to name here, but you know who you are! smile.gif

Metal Reference Websites:
http://metal-archives.com/
---Probably the biggest archive of metal bands on the net. They have band descriptions, discographies, lyrics, album covers and links to official sites, myspace and fansites of each band.
http://www.metalstorm.ee
---A lot Smaller than metal-archives but has news and interviews. Specializes in underground stuff.
http://metal-rules.com/
---This is more of a commercial site. They deal in more well known acts than the two previous sites. They also have news and reviews.

Maybe we can get all bands/artists goin in this thread and then make a new thread and make it organized and maybe rank the bands by the best to the okay. Sounds great.

Later on I can add some more thrash bands. Most of those bands were 80s thrash bands totally forgot about the modern bands.

Me and rokchik were chatting a little bit yesterday about this. What if we cover all genres we possibly can, and then later make a subforum in the Bands & Artists forum and have one sticky thread for each genre?

What about bands like

Rammstein
Marilyn Manson
White Zombie/Rob Zombie
Nine Inch Nails
Filter
System of a Down

I didn't see them but I think they are more "industrial" or "Nu" metal. Don't know how many sub genres you may want but I could devise a list of those kinds of bands if you like.

hey Uncreator for Behemoth, shoudnt you specify that there later albums ie: Satanica and the albums beyond that are there death metal release or (Blackened) Death Metal

Sventevith and Grom beeing there early Black Metal releases.

Im sure most people here arent anal about that stuff but its good to clear up so people would know the difference between early Behemoth and there later releases.

Awesome list btw. im lookin for bands that you didnt mentioned. Im sure it would tough seeing as how you mentioned most of the bands I listen to.

Posted by: VinceG Aug 31 2007, 12:04 PM

Drone/Doom:
Burial Chamber Trio
Jesu (although some songs/parts are sludgy)
The Angelic Process
Khanate
Wormphegm
Warhorse
Burning Witch
Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine
Om

Sludge/Stoner:
Eternal Elsyium
Weedeater
Toadliquor
Isis
Mouth Of The Architect
Melvins
Lair Of The Minotaur
Heavy Lord
Grief
Corrupted

Progressive/Avante-Garde:
Mr. Bungle
Orthrelm

Power Metal:
Persuader

Some mistakes/Suggestions:
Dissection- Arent they Black Metal? Your talking about the Swedish band right?
Red Sparrowes- They are a post-rock band.

I'm pretty sure there is a black metal band called Dissection. There might be more than one band of course.

There is a Canadian death metal band called Creep Colony aswell btw. We got the name first though, too bad we have no proof. But we talked a little with them, it was ok for them so we just leave it tongue.gif Two different genres anyway.

It would be great to have bands to recommend. Because someone that doesn't know anything about say black metal need bands to start out with before picking a random band from the list. wink.gif

Progressive/Death : -
Backmask
Textures

Death -
Graveworm

Black -
Thus Defiled

Folk : -
Alestorm

Should we have a Metalcore section too?

Posted by: Fsgdjv Sep 1 2007, 07:05 PM

Great list!

Allthough, Red Sparrowes shouldn't be on there as VinceG said, they're definetly post rock.

I'd like to add Cult of Luna, Neurosis and Pelican for Doom/Sludge/Stoner/Drone.

And for Progressive you forgot both Novembre and Nahemah, two awesome bands!

1349 is missing from the black metal one, and Mastodon is missing from wherever they fit in biggrin.gif

EDIT: Oh, and concerning Dissection, aren't they considered black/death? If we're talking about the swedish band with Jon Nödtveidt as the front man that is.

EDIT again: Oh, and Avatar is missing from the Melodic Death section!

Melodic Death:
Dark Tranquillity

Core with many black/death influences:
Purified in Blood

yea I kinda figured that about them. I was listening to The Somberlain and there deffintley black metal from what I am hearing. Man Jon is crazy for taking his life like that. Kinda like Dead but less gruesome.

http://www.myspace.com/dissection502 - Popular name.

Theres also more. None of it was black metal in my ears. Some of if sort of sounded like black metal though, but I wouldnt really call it black metal bands just becuase of a couple of riffs or because the vocals sounded black.

I was gonna post this on my celtic topic but here seemed to make more sense. The band is called Eluveitie and they are from Switzerland. They are a celtic/folk metal band with some death metal influence. Hope you like it.

Here is a list of recoomended metal bands, any ones you do not see posted here, add to it! Hopefully we will be able to do this with Blues, Classick Rock, Jazz and everything else, but since metal is my specialty im startin here smile.gif

This is a collection of all the ones i could think of, Some people have messaged me, And some i got off UG. i actually think i can make this list bigger with time, as i come across them, remember if i forgot any, let me know here or on a PM, Or if i made a mistake. this took me awhile to do so im sure i messed up somewhere.

Nice list you have going, Someone already mentioned it but you should put In Flames up on the list under thrash, or melodic thrash. as well throw the band Soilwork on there as well. Another band I didnt see was Exhorder.

Those bands arent thrash. Isnt it called metalcore or something?

Posted by: Owen Oct 16 2007, 02:44 AM

In Flames are melodic death, as are Soilwork, if Exhorder arent up already then they qualify as thrash.

Posted by: VinceG Oct 16 2007, 03:32 AM

Maybe as a next project for the list, we should label them accoringly to the rightful called genre. Like for example Behemoth next to there name early work Black Metal later works Blackened Death Metal. Maybe something simpler like not just calling bands death, thrash, or black but more like saying there exact like pagan black, viking, nsbm, blackened doom, folk etc.

I dont know im just rambling on feel free to ignore it. I figured it would be hard for someone to see the difference of Vital Remains to Dark Tranquility or something if we both just put them in the list Death Metal.

Posted by: Willy Oct 16 2007, 05:10 AM

In my opinion, Nightwish is a symphonic metal band, or am I wrong?

Posted by: Unleash-The-Shred Oct 19 2007, 10:18 PM

Add Allan Holdsworth to jazz, he is an amazing guitarist.

Also here is a website full of music lists and you may find this a great site to find music you have never heard before.

http://digitaldreamdoor.com/

Just go to music lists and select which list you would like to view

Well, Power metal section was met to encompass the symphonic as well, untill i get a list.
Its hard to find time to do this with school/work/and college researching and whatnot, im just really busy right now.

Yeah, a bit more detailed wouldn't hurt like for instance dividing melodic death with death since the genres basically don't have anything in common, etc. However, going into details like pagan black, nsbm (seriously, are there any good nsbm bands?) etc might get too much for the Uncreator, he's a human after all. (or? blink.gif )

yea, but we can help. Burzum is an NSBM band so is Graveland which are pretty good, but I just dont listen to other bands with this kind of ideology.

Actually no, i am no human, i am a level 99 necromancer, long story. smile.gif

Anyway, this shouldnt be too hard, it might take me a little bit, but is do-able. You know, if you want to divide one of the lists up into there respective subgenres, you can post it here and i will just copy it to the original post.

You might want to add Baroness to the Sludge section, they're an interesting band that sorta mix thrashy vocals with progressive style melodies and choruses.

Their frontman also did the designs for the latest Darkest Hour, Pig Destroyer and Skeletonwitch covers, his art is well worth checking out if you have the time smile.gif

Posted by: Fsgdjv Oct 21 2007, 07:58 AM

VinceG: Pfft, Burzum is not nsbm, he's just "misunderstood" (aka loves to piss people off and and attention wh**e, but that's not enough to call it nsbm imo).

National Socialist Black Metal

Posted by: KRmachine Oct 25 2007, 11:03 PM

This list is just a big pile of words without at least some kind of description of what the band sounds like. I'm certainly not going to check some band out I've heard the name of and nothing else.

Posted by: The Uncreator Oct 26 2007, 03:56 AM

Feel free to help out and make an individual descripton for each band, or even just the genres.

Posted by: KRmachine Oct 26 2007, 05:22 AM

Maybe if I find myself with a lot of spare time, not right now though.

That said, it doesn't need to be anything fancy, just making the band name a link that goes to their myspace or equivalent where you can hear them would go a long way, and wouldn't take that much time.

Posted by: The Uncreator Oct 27 2007, 07:44 AM

Do you mean from every band? that would take a few weeks!

Posted by: VinceG Oct 27 2007, 08:12 AM

Nah, we dont need to do that much work. Specific genre is all you need to attract someone really. If your interested in hearing the band then it should be your responsibility to find out more about the band. We cant spoon feed you.

We don't need to do it on other genres right? Pretty much Black, Death, and Doom are the once that need specifics.

Posted by: dropbman Oct 27 2007, 08:28 AM

The Faceless is pretty crazy and they call themselves death metal
http://www.myspace.com/thefaceless
Bring Me The Horizon is good too but idk if they can technically be called metal but they're thrash if anything

Is it just me or is Katatonia missing from that doom list? (Maybe they have been missing all along? O.o) Anyways, their old stuff is doom/death, and the rest is just some kind of depressive rock, so doom/death I guess. And Anathema is also missing, same goes for them, their old stuff is doom/death and new stuff is some kind of atmospheric rock

Posted by: VinceG Oct 28 2007, 05:51 AM

doom wasnt my preference. I just searched all this in MA, copy and paste. Although yes Katatonia should have been here.

Posted by: Fsgdjv Oct 28 2007, 06:14 AM

I guessed you copy pasted, it was more pointed towards the general list I guess.

Posted by: The Uncreator Oct 28 2007, 09:23 AM

Thanks for the list by the way. ill add katatonia wink.gif

omegod! dude is that like 1000+ listed?

Posted by: Unleash-The-Shred Oct 28 2007, 10:52 AM

Yeah haha it seems like it, its huge now.

Posted by: The Uncreator Oct 28 2007, 11:53 AM

Still unfinished too biggrin.gif

Posted by: steve25 Oct 31 2007, 06:09 AM

seems like a pretty good idea for general band ideas however i agree that melodic death and death metal should be separated. But if someone was to want an actual recommendation for them perhaps they could make a new post, say what they're into and what bands they know and ask for recommendations depending on what genre they want

Posted by: exorcyze Oct 31 2007, 07:34 AM

Just watched that video for Eluveitie - that's some cool stuff! Imma have to get that. =)

Posted by: The Uncreator Oct 31 2007, 08:25 AM

I will start to work on separating melodic death from death, and then gradually the other genres.

Posted by: Aarggh Nov 6 2007, 01:41 PM

there's a canadian one called Kataklysm. an american one called DevilDriver.
saw them both with Unearth and Dimmu Borgir back in May. Wicked show!
(note: I wanted to say effin' wicked show but have noticed no other foul language so I must check the forum rules...)

Uncreator, I'll help you clean up these recommendation threads and get links and info on the bands as requested before.

Just let me know what you think first since this is your thread.

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 10 2007, 08:19 AM

Well, im almost done with the Death/Melodic death separation, any other genre you feel you can further diversify or further add information too, feel free, PM me the fina list or post it here.

Posted by: Vinicitur Nov 10 2007, 05:58 PM

I've noticed that some of the people have been asking for more descriptions for the bands.

I think that would be pretty long to do so I will add some links here of websites that already have the descriptions and related stuff.

http://metal-archives.com

Probably the biggest archive of metal bands on the net. They have band descriptions, discographies, lyrics, album covers and links to official sites, myspace and fansites of each band.

http://www.metalstorm.ee/home/index.php

A lot Smaller than metal-archives but has news and interviews. Specializes in underground stuff.

http://metal-rules.com/

This is more of a commercial site. They deal in more well known acts than the two previous sites. They also have news and reviews.

I'm actually looking for some new bands to listen to so I'm slowly going through the entire list using these sites (especially metal-archives).

Hope this helps smile.gif

Posted by: VinceG Nov 11 2007, 08:59 AM

everyone knows the archives. Vinicitur are you in there forum?

Posted by: Anastasio123 Nov 11 2007, 09:31 AM

You should put Protest the Hero in either thrash or progressive. Mastodon could go in either of those categories too.

Nice work though, this thing shows you A LOT of bands to check out. smile.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 11 2007, 11:05 AM

Ok people, i have made all the band names under Progressive links to there web page, i will probably do death metal or power metal next, since those two are the biggest.

No I only use it to research bands. I have a problem with all the flame wars they have. Everyone keeps arguing about the definition of metal and I'm tired of it. sad.gif

They dont really do it that much anymore. Only when someone is trolling the forums like a moron. General Discussion is the one I visit often since its a little less intense.

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 11 2007, 12:49 PM

Its been awhile since ive been on there, i remember there were like a minimum of 10 flame wars a day laugh.gif

Posted by: Vinicitur Nov 11 2007, 12:52 PM

Yeah usually it starts with "Why isn't Band X in the archive?"

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 11 2007, 12:54 PM

Yeah, im trying to avoid that here, and try to get as many bands as i can get in here, in the proper category, where no one is displeased, but that might be impossible.

I guess i gotta try it though

Posted by: Vinicitur Nov 11 2007, 01:06 PM

I think if people accept that every metal fan will have their own definition of Metal it should be alright.

Just realized I dont see Therion anywhere? Or maybe I am just blind? blink.gif

I'd also like to add a band to the list. Haggard it a classical/symphonic metal band. Here's the link to their myspace site.

You could add Onslaught to the Thrash-list.
I have their new cd 'Killing Peace' and I recommand you to check it out. It's really nice!
I'm not familiar with their older work ( only 3 albums, they stopped in 1991 and now they're back)
but I'll check them further out.

I just got there 89 release In Search Of Sanity the other day. From my perspective, its pretty good but the vocals are a little more NWOBHM sounding since there singer for this one came from Grim Reaper. Not bad, lots of thrashin riffs! I heard Killing Peace is new Exodus worship. Not really sure what to think of that.

Posted by: Vinicitur Nov 28 2007, 08:50 PM

In the thrash list you have a band called "suicidan tendencies". Shouldn't it be "suicidal tendencies"?

Cradle of Filth needs to be on here, I can't stress how awesome their new album is, Thornography. Paul Allender is like one of the best riffmakers ever. I genre though is pretty disputed but I would say it is gothic metal.

We had a looooong discussion on that subject in Metal-Archives once. But yea, I think for a band to be Viking Metal, it has to have elements of something Viking not just the lyrics.

Posted by: Smikey2006 Dec 30 2007, 10:22 PM

Amon Amarth is amazing! ive just rescently discovered Gojira who is an amazing band and Final Plague who is also very good(except i think they broke up)

A Couple of Others ive rescently discovered (Dunno if they've been mentioned before)
Five Finger Death Punch
Artillery
August Burns Red
Belphegor
Blood Simple
Bloodbath

Posted by: Fsgdjv Dec 30 2007, 10:49 PM

Oh yeah, bloodbath are amazing. Definetly one of my favourite bands, and their new record will kick ass, and it looks like Åkerfeldt will be back on the vocals, so that's great news, even though Tätgren also was amazing..

Are you talking about Sabbath like Black Sabbath or the UK Thrash band Sabbath?

I think Blind Guardian as a whole is in Power Metal since most of there work may it be from old or new are Power Metal. Speed Metal as a genre is very confusing anyway. Its like umm Extreme Metal.

Yeah.... I would consider maybe Power-speed or something... I was thinking about the grandfathers of metal, Black Sabbath. Strange thing he didn't put that in there. I haven't heard the thrash band Sabbath, though. Thrash metal is my favorite genre of music, so I'll check it out. Thanks. A couple of more thrash bands is Exhorder and Warbringer.

I love the song Vampire by Khallice, the guitarist Marcelo Barbosa is pretty good, my favourite brazilian guitarists are Edu Ardanuy and Kiko Loureiro from Dr.Sin and Angra...... also, 2 less famous guitarists from Brazil that are awesome are Gustavo Guerra and Oziel Zinho. Other good Brazilian guitarists I would say are Sydnei Carvalho, Juninho Afram, Wellington Vilhena, Renato Palheta, Ricky Furlani and Gil Manoel.

They all write good music, so they could be added to the metal recommendations list!!

Turbo are a good death/thrash band. They only had one album called Last Warrior, but it was killer.

Posted by: VinceG May 11 2008, 09:30 AM

This http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=3536 Seems like they had tons of release

That album cover looks very familiar though, so I might check it out. Thanks.

Haha, sorry. I meant to type one good album.

Moonspell aren't on the list. They're doom or gothic, I don't really know.

Also add In Mourning and Deathspell Omega

Posted by: Fsgdjv Jul 20 2008, 09:27 PM

I don't know if this thread is getting updated or not, but I just noticed that the best black metal band in the world right now, Wolves in the Thone Room are missing from the list.

(Yes they are and if you don't agree it means your taste is flawed, nothing else. ph34r.gif )

Can Trivium be removed from the Thrash section and thrown in the fire?

Posted by: Landara Jul 24 2008, 04:27 PM

You forgot Lacuna Coil smile.gif They are listed as Gothic, I'm not sure though. But they are Italian metal at it's finest! smile.gif

Just popping in to make sure that Nile is present on this recommendation list. I see that they are mentioned twice, this is fitting. Therefore, this thread officially has my approval!

Hi guys... Im new, i know... If you really like metal, check out a dude os Sirius Hard Attack (now liquid metal) named Ian Christe.. He wrote a book called "sound of the beast" all about heavy metal... its really good... anyway, Meshuggah is not on here, and they are really good.. I would say the progressive/avant garde section... I really think that they at least deserve to be on here.. But everything looks really good i think.. It seems to all be in order, and i dont think that there is anyway were ever going to get EVERY band on here...

QUOTE (The Uncreator @ Aug 29 2007, 08:52 PM) *

I noted that Scar Symmetry is not listed and you are missing a whole different Universe. Check out any of their 3 cds. Personally, I recommend their last Masterpiece, Holographic Universe. I'm not able to describe the band. Just listen to them..........

I love Scar Symmetry. They are the last band that banged my head. Solos, melodies, Christian voice, Sound, all is just amazing. Per Nilsson has a very unusual touch in his solos that calls a lot my atention.

Basically, since we got the wikipedia going, I really dont see any further use for this. I dont have any time to do this anymore at all. So I'm going to close the thread.
