GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Tabletop Roleplayers In Gmc

Posted by: Spiderusalem Oct 12 2007, 07:26 AM

Any of you guys ever do some tabletop roleplaying (as opposed to bedroom roleplaying, thats a different topic) or am I the only geeky guitar player on these forums?

I usually play D&D every fortnight or so, have been doing so for the last couple of years with the same group.

So no, you're not alone!

What sort of games do you play?

Not doing this myself, but I know some people who do. And if you want my honest opinion, I think it's a bit lame and childish, but that's just me... tongue.gif biggrin.gif (Hope your not offended...)

I played everything. DnD, Vampire, Werewolf, Mutants and Masterminds, Shadowrun.

aside from being a novice guitar player I'm also an actor and a writer, and those two things fit right into roleplaying.

I played with a bunch of different groups over the years, but our long term games always seem to end at around session 30ish (if a game ever even gets passed 5 sessions). Always drama within the groups, and I dont mean in character acting.

I've been playing for so long that over the years I've started making up my own systems and running unique game themes. Among my favorites were:

-Zombie Apocalypse Campaign
-Teenage Super Heroes Campaign
-Dungeons and Dragons pre level 1 characters (basically we played as the children forced to survive in a violent DnD world, and 'missions' involved stealing food and trying not to get beat by adults. it had very mature themes for a game where our characters were teenagers)
-A Super Hero campaign where we played the Villains.
-Post Apocalyptic Campaign
-A "Bad 70's Blacksploitation" themed pulp noir campaign.
-A Time Travelling, Doctor Who meets Back to the Future ish campaign

I have a pretty wild imagination, and I find that roleplaying is an excellent outlet for that. Its like creating a shared vision of crazy worlds.

Its a game where you play out an event or storyarc in character (one you make up based on the boundaries and guidelines everyone agrees one). Its like improvising an entire episode of a show. You're in charge of whatever this character does in the world. How the world affects your character is judged by someone else.

Typically, a group is made up of the players, and one person "running" the game known as the DM. you're playing out his story, in the world of his choosing. He's in charge of all the monsters, characters, and things that your character interacts with. But he's not against you, and the point of the game is not really to win, but rather to create a shared rewarding experience (much like playing in a band, you're not out to beat your band members but rather to create a mutual experience).

Theres more, but thats the just of it.

Yeah, I've done it a few times with a group of friends. I thought that it got pretty boring after a while though. I probably just have crappy friends tongue.gif

Yeah, me too - is there a way of doing this over the net?

Posted by: MickeM Oct 12 2007, 09:41 PM

lol I read this stuff pretending you're all talking about ...how do I put this... about a grown up bedroom group activity.

Pretty funny reading... except what VinceG said about kids, but Uncreators talk about farts and poop and D&D style was priceless, real advanced stuff right there laugh.gif
And Andrew who wants to try it over the net laugh.gif

Keep talking about your role playing, bear in mind I'll be reading it my way pretending another subject. Carry on! laugh.gif

ok.. I'll grow up rolleyes.gif just not right now! cool.gif

In the early 90's I did some experiments with this in in IRC kind of format with Paranoia (probably my fave RPG). It was interesting because the backchannel communication between players and the DM were more secret. Didn't really stick with it though because of typing lag.

LMAO MikeM, since you put it that way I see an entire twist on this conversation. Too funny lol laugh.gif laugh.gif
